The most sensible post on this thread -Bravo laddie/lass/preferred pronoun
No, because forced represantation in any content, especially fantasy, is one of the last nail in the coffin for it. For example WoW is (was) a immersive escapism tool for me to get away from everydays nonsense, incuding this inclusivity madness of the last decade.
I have to wear glasses since I was 3 years old, and I never felt offended that people with glasses are not representated enough, I can play charcters in games even if they don’t wear glasses.
The problem is my opinion that some the different minorities act like they are the majority, they don’t care about the damage they cause.
To narrow it down to WoW, for example the races in the franchaise had their establised lore fantasy, the classes had their fantasy, which were thrown out of the window for some political agenda reason. I mean now we have sub-saharan, asian people represented in fantasy races like blood elves, dwarves, gnomes fo no lore reasons. I don’t have problem what they put in differently coloured characters in the game, as long they fit the narrative of their race and position in the established world. But this is only one example, before you people start you cyst accusations. I have no problem elves having dark skinf in D&D, or entire human faction of the redguard in the Elder Scrolls universe being black, since this is their establised lore.
It’s a fact that dark-skinned elves already existed in World of Warcraft, and they were called night elves. The nightborne and void elves, on the other hand, are not different species but rather the same elves who have adapted to their unique environments. However, what’s truly baffling is that the game developers added humans without following this internal logic. It’s ridiculous to think that the majority race in Stormwind, with a population of just a few hundred thousand, hasn’t outbred the others, which implies that humans must practice racial segregation. It would have been great if we had Mongolian-themed Vrykul hibernating in Pandaria, for instance, to introduce Asian humans and bring more cultural diversity to the game. Humanity is on the brink of extinction since the fall of Lorderon and the other human kingdoms, so adding more diversity could have made World of Warcraft even more exciting.
Exactly, this is why i think this forced inclusion is just makes no sense and kils the immersion in the game. And it’s apllies to every humanlike race in the world.
For those who would say that it’s a fantasy world and it not cesccesary should have tha same biologicaly rules as the the world, I have 2 responses:
- first, if real life inclusions like this are not needed, then we should not have the forced inclusivity we having since BfA/SL, don’t be a hypocrite
- second even fantasy worlds need a ruleset, that make the base for the creation of the lore and the stories, which can includes the need of the human mind for a logic, rule on how the races look, and what canonical changes possible within the ruleset of the world.
Indeed, as the famous wow player, Patrick Henry sad “give me lore or give me death”, if you include new features of already existing things in the game, that very different from the established lore, like said black high elves, who shouldn’t be dark skinned, because of their lifestyle. The same way I would be mad if they would start to apply “white” skins to races, like orcs, for political reason. If you can’t expand the changes based on the establised base rules, then don’t do it, or be preaperd that people will call you out for the obvious policial propaganda you are doin (I am speaking of the game devs, ofc).
We people? Who is that? Are we generalising a bit? Is everyone, who appreciates being included in public perception now part of the ultimate target for whatever hate “you people” have? Of course it never crossed your mind. Because you can’t identify with those, whose mind it crossed. If I told you that young black girls struggle to find role models that reflect their social background and identity in a dominantly white environment, you wouldn’t understand or emphasize because you can’t relate. If I told you that for black girls it’s twice the struggle to love themselves because all they get bombarded with as a kid are white beauty standards, you wouldn’t understand either. Black models to this day are expected to straighten their naturally curly hair. Enough female black celebrities are bleaching their skin which makes for greater success. Is that your idea of authentic, healthy representation, yeah?
Not even going to respond to such a pathetic troll post.
Fact is, a lot of people getting enraged about the “sudden spike of foreigners” in their country are doing so because they just realised how multicultural society actually is. Didn’t happen yesterday. It’s just reflected in media since yesterday.
I absolutely refuse to tolerate any sort of insults or belittlement from someone who is projecting their own insecurities onto me. My childhood experiences were not a “pathetic troll post” and I will not let anyone diminish the impact they had on my life. While growing up in the highlands of Scotland was indeed an isolating and lonely experience, films provided a much-needed escape. The Blade, Hellboy, and Johnny were critical role models for me because of their complex relationships with their fathers. Their race, nationality, and fictional origins are irrelevant because the lessons they taught me about self-worth and family were invaluable.
I will not stand for anyone who thinks they can dismiss my experiences or force their narrow-minded views on me. The world is complex and multifaceted, and people come from all walks of life. I refuse to be pigeonholed into a black-and-white dichotomy based on someone else’s biases. Instead of trying to play the white savior or pushing an agenda onto others, individuals should focus on building their own character and learning to respect diverse perspectives. If you are unable to do that, you should not expect anyone to come to your aid when you need it the most.
Put stock in your own opinion. It matters as much as anyone else’s opinion. Stop trembling in the face of these minorities screaming at you that you are born this way and that because you’re white.
I love how you call me self-righteously arrogant as you show yourself to be righteously arrogant.
I have always approached others’ POVs with an open mind and have taken the time to read and respond to them. However, if I find flaws or inaccuracies in their arguments, I am not afraid to point them out and explain why they are wrong. While I respect everyone’s experiences, feelings are not the same as facts, and I will not hesitate to challenge opinions based on incorrect information.
I grew up with an extensive victim narrative. Everyone labelled the country’s poverty, crime rates, drug abuse, lack of jobs, religious sectarianism and poor economy at the feet of the English. They would always use historical examples of atrocity from 300 years ago about why the country was in terrible shape so they couldn’t change it. There’s the rub, though. Everyone in the UK is struggling, and it’s not a Celtic vs Anglo dichotomy. It’s somewhat toxic to frame it that way. It poisons future generations and makes it impossible for them to escape poverty, making them hate their neighbour. I left Scotland when I was 15 and moved to Asia. They do not have this issue, which changed my view of everything. It turns out all of those problems weren’t the cause of so many events 300 years ago, but things Scots could have easily changed if they cared to, but they would rather keep the ethnic grift going, and it only intensified as things got worse.
I live in England, and they have their issues, but who doesn’t? They welcomed me into their communities with open arms and showed me hospitality and respect. It turns out that no matter the place in the world I’ve visited, whether that was Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, America, continental Europe and yeah, even England, we aren’t that different. We are all dealing with the same problems.
Should I call it First World or Western Saviour instead of white? The term is white saviour, and if you behave that way for people, you will be labelled it. It’s only called that because it mainly comes from those of European descent, and it’s not too far off, considering your on the EU server and not the SA Ocianic or American servers.
I want to clarify that I did not assume your gender at any point. It seems like you are trying to dig for something to criticize me about. I did not use any pronouns to refer to you either.
Christmas arrived early with a juicy post full of people arguing!
I’m not the one calling others racist, sexist and prude for appreciating representation by characters that align with their identity. You are.
Lol. Right.
Because you are right. Right?
No, you don’t.
You have literally no information about the individuals you just labelled with some of the most insulting terms one could up with.
I’ve been living in Scotland for seven years, I don’t need a lecture.
The term “white saviour” refers to white people, primarily men, who intend to speak for black people / on their behalf about issues, struggles and experiences that aren’t their own. I’m a coloured woman, I can speak for myself and the fact thar you’re assuming my identity to be a stereotypical white “gamer male” tells me that stereotypes are indeed living rent free in your head. You assume, associate and accuse without knowing any facts nor the life reality of your opponent. You wax off about YOUR struggles and experiences making them the only valid measure for judgement while belittling, ridiculing and discriminating other perspectives on the matter. You create a one-way perspective echo chamber with your pals, affirming and boosting each other in your fake righteousness while talking about topics you have literally zero experience with. Now tell me again how your diverse perspective works in detail, so I can have a good laugh while baking ginger bread.
You people. The ones who push for this. Why is that hard to understand? Unless you are trying to pull an “Irishman” on me? Is that it? You trying to get me silenced?
And they can’t identify with me. So what, they are right and I’m wrong? Who decides and based on what?
I can’t relate? Show me one other industry aside the western one that is full of withe people? That’s like me taking my kid to China and complaining he can’t find white role models in their entertainment. Western entertainment is THE most inclusive place on this earth. You won’t find that degree of diversity anywhere. So please, tell me, in comparison to what do you determine these girls struggle so much with?
It really is funny to me when you bring this up. Cause when a white person let’s say wears an afro hair, what happens? Oh yeah, they get accused of cultural appropriation. Leaving aside the fact that it’s still the western world and the majority are white people, that you seem to have a problem with, there’s no way for whites to take up appearances from other cultures without causing a scandal. So don’t ask me if that’s my idea, ask yourself that question.
So in conclusion, your have an issue that the west is too western focused, in your personal opinion. That it’s too white. That is actually very racist. Thank you. Proved my original point so good.
Rather trying to get the icing on my bakery. But good to know that your explicit version of “you people” would probably get you silenced. Taking notes.
Nothing to do with right or wrong. More to do with ignorance towards other’s needs and perspective.
South Africa, Australia, New Zealand. You know what those three have in common? I give you a hint. It starts with c.
I don’t know which country your from, but you tend to generalise a lot there. While the UK indeed exercises a pretty inclusive media culture (leaving out the tabloid press…) that’s not really standard for all Western countries.
By who? Me? Or “my people”?
You mean like America? The most “Western” continent originally inhabited by Asian descendants that then got populated by white people, who brought their blacl slaves with them? Or the UK, who brought their Asian and African colonial subjects with them to the country? Please clarify.
Would be an F in rhetoric for you.
accuse of them of insults and then calls them a clown in the same sentence so ironic and toxic.
Your freestyle interpretation of an emoji doesn’t equal actual words spoken but thanks.
When you justify putting race, sex and gender over the quality and necessity of the work and, in doing so, damage the work to push a political agenda, you are racist, sexist and prude fueled on the bigotry of low expectations for other groups who never asked, needed or wanted you to do so in the first place because they have the resources to do it themselves and have been doing it for decades. The reason the term white saviour exists is because white people, and it’s not just exclusive to them, tend to override and hijack projects because they don’t think they can achieve success without their grace because they only see validity in their being. You see it in Hollywood all the time when companies give Hollywood characters, gender and race swaps and turn characters LGBT because they have no confidence that characters who weren’t originally white, female or LGBT won’t sell even though some of the most popular characters aren’t white, men or straight and come from many different backgrounds. An excellent example of this was Blade, who revolutionised superhero movies, the X-Men and even the Watchmen.
Respecting your experience doesn’t mean agreeing with your experience or believing it. That’s just ignorance and naivety. People lie, cheat, steal and play politics to get places. I will hear you out and then give you the common decency of responding. You may not like the response or the feedback, but I have given you the respect of my time. If I didn’t respect your opinion, I wouldn’t respond and treat you like you didn’t exist.
In the case of pointing out those inaccuracies, why do you think I called it revisionist history? It’s not from first-party sources but from modern sources who went back and inferred something about the time even though it contradicts the established account, which comes with records, the reason why they did it and the benefit that brought them in their time and the consequences of what happened to them when found out. An excellent example in the case of writers is Arther Conan Doyle, the writer of Sherlock Holmes, who went under the pen name of Conan Doyle after his favourite writers but was subject to mass harassment, depression and threats of violence for killing his main character Sherlock Holmes. It even extended to his mother, begging him to continue. Mary Shelley, formerly Mary Wollstonecraft, was published under a female name at the height of the 1800s. People did not find it odd that a woman was a writer, and she was very well respected for her talent, gaining audiences with many chief political figures even though her father was politically controversial. It’s somewhat controversial to think this way when the most powerful, respected, and loved person not just in the UK but all of Europe was the grandmother of Europe herself, Queen Victoria, whose death in 1901 gave way to the Edwardian Age destabilised the continent enough and exacerbated the rivalry between Kaiser Whilhem, George V and Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov.
Of course, I have information on the individual. I have the information which they have provided me. That is the purpose of a conversation; it’s an exchange of information, though you may be foreign to the concept. An excellent example of this is that I guessed you were living in Scotland from using phrases such as “Oh Aye” or another version of the phrase which is commonly used pot meet kettle.
I will also lecture you on my homeland because it’s my homeland, culture, people, and blood. If you have been living in Scotland for years and that is not your home you are nothing but a guest. You should treat yourself as such, just as I did in Asia, America and England, because it wasn’t my point of origin, and I was there on the goodwill of the population who trusted me enough not to bring my problems to their countries because they shouldn’t have to put up with my baggage or nonsense.
I never mentioned your colour, sex or point of origin. I merely inferred that you were on the European server therefore you had inherited a European mentality just as I inherited an Asian mentality when I left Scotland leaving my victim narrative past behind me. You are applying the racial, sexist beliefs to the statement nor does the definition of white saviour include men as the primary proponents of such behaviour that is your confirmation bias outing you as a racist and sexist as you clearly have a prejudice frame of view against those of other races and sexes. It also doesn’t attribute it to be black only, this can happen to Hispanics, Asians and Africans and they can by the way can act the same way to Europeans.
Playing the innocent when everyone knows what that passive aggersive emjoi is for but you do you i guess, just like you love going around calling people dumb to in threads
Sincerely isnt my main issue. But im male white in a western country so im not the perfect recipient for your question.
So it’s not wrong to be ignorant then?
Skip the guessing games. Say what you mean.
Oh really? So which of these nasty countries does not meet your idea of acceptable diversity? Also please define what that means, acceptable diversity.
Sorry, I don’t follow your twitter facebook social meida whatever, so I have no idea. You tell me.
Yes.
Then prove me wrong. Show me I mad a mistake, I misinterpreted your posts instead of just tossing that superficial crap at me.
Alright. So you claim knowing what those groups asked for, needed or wanted, ergo speaking on their behalf and plastering their voice with yours. The very same thing you accused people you call white saviours of. Consequently, you’re not two cents better than them.
Your claim that the vote for representation in terms of appearance would stem from racism is also flawed. Because it only can stem from racism, if you deem differences in appearance a feature of race. I don’t believe in races. I believe in ethnicities. And I see nothing wrong with representing ethnicities. Culture-wise and in appearance.
Yes it is. I know it would be convenient to you if it weren’t but it is. What you are trying to do is create associations between opinions and labels. You try to label any opinion that even remotely goes against your own opinion with negative terms, so it is easier for you to dismiss them. I’m not playing that game with you.
I like how you left the name Brontë out…
I’m living in Germany. Where I was born and raised. And pot meet kettle is a phrase used in Germany, too, so your reconstructions are flawed again. You have zero knowledge about my background and experiences.
The fact that you speak of different races implies that you in fact support race theory. But I am the racist? Ok my friend.
You tell me. I’m not the one complaining about other ethnic groups and minorities being visible in a game lol.
You are talking of Western culture being more inclusive than any other, when it was the Western world forcing their culture onto others more than anyone else in history. The West colonised the entire world establishing their system in foreign countries and continuing to do so. Pretty impressive for a global minority aka white people. Yet “your people” keep whining about minorities being represented in Western culture? I loled.
I suggest you spend some years in Bavaria or Eastern Germany.
*as a coloured woman
I don’t have fb or twitter, so your alleged association with “woke social media” will probably not work out.
You guys prove yourself wrong with your contradicting comments. Not gonna waste my time on that plus I know better things to do with my evening than “proving people wrong on the internet”. Is your hobby. Not mine. And now excuse me, have to plan a Christmas gathering with “my people”. We’ll discuss how we can improve on infiltrating your gaming space by putting more black and LGBTQ characters into it.
