As far as I can tell they intended to remove the currency, but changed their mind due to feedback and did only reset arena points in the end.

So removing honor and marks now wouldnt make any sense.

There was no honor reset back in the day from tbc to wotlk.
The honor/arena points to gold after each season became a thing starting in cataclysm.
