Resto Shaman

Hello guys,

I need some advice please.
I want to main a healer in this expansion.
I want to be a reactive healer and i like the fantasy and lore of shamans, druids and paladins. (i dont like priests or those pandasweavers).
As druid beeing a proactive healer and paladins beeing good only at the end of the expansions, i was thinking of giving shaman a try.
I would like your honest opinion about the current state of the class.
I heared that its very good for pve, but im planing on doing both pve and pvp, i noticed you guys complain about its survaivability, can a skilled player overcome that?
I believe the question that i want to ask is if its worth focusing and maining the resto shaman? is it worth investing in it? (i only play 1 class, my main, and i dont want to invest so much time in it and be bottom tier)

Thankyou, sorry for the long run, but im realy struggeling finding my healer.
, Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and moreover, A WAY OF LIFE’’

Cheers

Hey there.

Shamans are very reactive healers, so you’re on the right track. I’ve played mine for 10+ years, not out of enjoyment, but out of dedication and loyalty.

Long story short: You’re going to excel in stacked group healing, but you’re going to have to struggle more than others in Mythic+ just like in BfA. Why is that? Lack of damage reduction cooldowns for your tank and inconsistent single-target healing. Earth Shield being baseline has helped a bit on that front, boosting all healing done to Earth Shielded targets. Your main strength is your utility, which means your Earth Element, your Capacitator Totem, Tremor Totem, your Wind Shear, Heroism/Bloodlust and your high DPS potential with Flame Shock and Lava Burst.

Once you’ve played through a few dungeons, you’ll begin to notice the shortcomings of the spec, such as dealing with spread out group healing when people aren’t stacked and keeping the tank alive while you’re dealing with group-wide damage. From my first impression, having done my 8 Mythics in Shadowlands, I would say that Restoration is stronger in SL than it was in BfA. It is definitely going to be viable in higher mythic keys, but it’s not going to be a prioritized pick for the end-game, or in any Mythic+ competitions.

You’re still going to be topping the meters in raids, and you’ll do just fine on non-stacked fights with a lot of movement. Something like your Spirit Link Totem is going to be crucial in raids as well, especially for progression, along with Wind Rush Totem, so you’ll feel very useful.

In terms of playstyle, I’m not really sure how to describe it. It’s personal preference, after all. You’ll be standing still a lot to cast, as your heals have quite long cast times. This can be helped by higher levels of haste, but haste is not something you’re going to prioritize. You’ll be going for crit for the mana regen and throughput, and versatility for the flat throughput and damage reduction (especially in dungeons). For raids, you can prioritize haste/mastery instead of versatility.

As for PvP, I haven’t done much of it since Cataclysm, so I can’t speak on that, but from what I’ve seen it’s very viable. I watch Cdew’s stream a lot, and he does very well on Resto Shaman. Not so much in battlegrounds, it’s definitely an arena spec. All you have in terms of damage reduction is your Astral Shift, so they’re definitely one of the squishier healers in arena, so just make sure you play with classes who can peel for you and support you, so you don’t get trained, which has been a big problem for Shamans in arena for the last 8 years.

I think that about covers it. Let me know if you have any questions.

What an amazing reply! I’ve just recently made the jump to shaman [played since vanilla first shaman I’ve ever had] and I found your write up very helpful!

Never played shaman before. But must say I did all the mythics as resto this week. And it felt very easy. Jusy riptide dps use necrolord abilty and cloudburst totem + talent and soulbind (3x 23% more healing wave/riptide/surge and no matter where they are all are topped full. I never used healing rain or chain heal for sl mythic+.

Resto shamans are awesome atm.

Growl A mythic plus top player druid.

Thinks shaman would be really good for m+ and raiding:

Thank you so much for the information in this topic.

I’ve played shaman since BC, always Resto, but I mained some of my others in recent expansions: Holy pally in WoD and Disc priest in Legion (I skipped BfA). Coming back, I’ve been having some trouble choosing and some of the videos I’ve watched were saying shaman is boring and ineffective. Having dug deeper, I now realize that it probably reflected their own preferences.

I do think Disc is the most fun soloing spec for me, more so than any mage spec, for example (the one DPS class I have experience with), but I don’t see myself playing it in group content. I’m rusty in general, and therefore slower as a result, and I don’t think that Disc leaves much room for error.

On the other hand, after reading the info here, I did a shaman deep dive and then went and specced my shaman, set up my keybinds, etc. Despite the fact that there are some changes, it all feels so … right. I can’t judge if we still have the giant crits, since I’m just 45 and in WQ gear, but there’s something satisfying about how our abilities work together and about the fact that my muscle memory is still intact after all this time.

The one thing I’m unhappy about is covenants - they don’t line up with the lore of the class. It looks like Venthyr is a good choice for Torghast (which I’ll be 2-manning) and dungeons, with Kyrian as a second choice. I’m a bit miffed Fae is the worst choice for anything, since I’d have probably enjoyed it.

One question, though: do professions matter at all anymore? I still have Tailoring, which I initially picked up for the caster leg threads, now sadly removed (and which I guess is still decent for bags and cloaks). My friend can make me the legendary bases or I can just buy them - that’s not an issue. My other one is Enchanting, which I have no reason to drop.
