Hi,
Am I the only one struggling with aggro as a ret dps ? Even if I start with salvation blessing, every exorcism proc makes my aggro jump through the roof. And it’s not just on the first few seconds of the fight, I constantly sit at 80% + aggro if I run my rotation and oftentime have to waste a few procs/judgement so as to not get aggro.
Worst is that I don’t sit first on dps meter, I’m oftentime sitting between 300 and 400 dps but cannot aim higher. It’s a bit of a bummer and I wanted to know how other paladins felt about it and if you had ways to answer that situation.
P.S : It feels like it especially happens with war tanks, are they just worst at generating aggro ?

I am not sure what you are running as runes, but if you run SoM on bosses + HoR rune, you should be fine. Haven’t had any aggro issues as a ret tank so far.
I run SoM / Art of War / Exo / Crusader strike / Sheath of light.
And I’m talking about ret pala, not tank. My point is I don’t want to take aggro but even with blessing of salvation I generate so much that I can’t dps as much as I want.
We already are quite low in terms of dps, I just don’t understand why holy damage generates so much aggro.

I’m having major aggro issues too. If I run with a Warrior, Druid or Rogue tank I permently over aggro them. Even sometimes when using Blessing of Salvation over Blessing of Might.
Warlock or Paladin tanks easily can over aggro me but if any of the other tanks are not 90% parsing I just overaggro them flat out. Its bad design and its very punishing for bad tanks to constantly lose aggro and get blamed for doing too low dps.
This is another factor that is enforcing high parsing META. If your tanks ain’t 90 parsers and you play Ret you cant do your rotation because aggro problems.

Also Paladins got a Talent in TBC called Fanaticism that boosted Critical Hit Rate of Judgement but 20% and reduced Threat Generated by Holy Damage but 30% when Righteous Fury wasn’t activated.
Even with this Talent + Blessing of Salvation in TBC (30% + 30% reduction x2) I could over still over aggro the tank with Seal Twist Crits hiting 20k-30k with Wings. As a Ret you generate so much aggro if you do your rotation properly all the way up to WoTLK, it forces all your tanks to be pumpers or you actually cant play your spec. This should be fixed for SoD 100%.

war tanks have poop threat, you just need a pumper tank. as rogue tank i have no threat issues but then again i am horde so i have alpha buff, but vs people doing under 500 dps i usually hold if doing envenom (i do about 300 dps), on last boss they just need to not troll during flamethrower and otherwise its perfectly fine
Its hard to tell because you are horde but Ret is so burtsy right now and all of our burst is holy damage I can go from behind 30% behind to over aggroing the tank in seconds.
If you are doing 500 dps as the tank then you’d probably hold aggro. Thats a big ask as 99% of the tanks do crap dps or take the tanky runes so you cant do dps as a Ret. Not matter how they try and fox our spec they keep causing problems.
i mean i do 300, but i have double threat modifier so people have to do over 600 to steal, or i have to be 30y away from boss. tbh on last boss i dont pump as hard to make sure i take the least amount of dmg, but then again as rogue threat single target has never been problematic so far
edit: i had a look, on pummeler today i was at 281 dps and holding fine vs a 550 dps pumper warlock, and its not like im the best rogue tank eu

Thats a fair point. Our tank feral has wildstrikes rune active and still tanks the whole raid. He even takes 3 of the adds at menagerie solo.
The only threat issue I have is when Thermaplugg in his first phase does the fire breath charge and the tank has to kite him (so not dps at this time).
problem with kite phase is that if tank gets too far the requirement to steal threat also decreases. i found that as rogue i can just go 0/31 combat and pump really hard at start, so the 4-5k threat lead i create is usually enough, and i try to not go too far from boss anymore
Ye he gets into “range threat” then. Kinda dumb tbh.
It’s part of the dps skill to be aware of your threat.
Everyone can press 123123.
Already during P1, ret pallies had stolen aggro quite a bit. Given their innate tankiness I didn’t care too much. Especially as my taunt was melee. Take a mob? Keep it.
Are you running with a warrior tank by any chance?
Because they are struggling a lot, thats not a ret pala issue thats a warrior issue.
I want to see paladin dmg buffs now so they can pull even more aggro.

Its not because if you play Warlock or Shaman you can turn off your brain and be tanky and not have to think and keep aggro.
To hold aggro as Prot Paladin you need to go full into the Holy tree and get holy shock and take the tank rune on your gloves and then go the full Ret Runes to do enough damage to be able to hold aggro.
Prot Warrior needs to full into Fury take Thunderclap rune and spam Thunderclap and Bloodthirst and duel wield on bosses who do low damage.
Rogue needs to not take their parry rune and go Envenom and spam it to hold aggro.
You basically need to do this weird hybrid build on the weaker tank classes and make your self more squishy just for you to be able to hold aggro. Why can 2 tanks get DPS and tankyness for free and everyone else has to trade survivability to do enough damage to tank.
Its also very counter intuitive that you need to build full damage and low mitagation to tank effectively.
Struggles with threat…
Goes full ape mode anyway…
Yup, thats a skill issue…
Yup skill issue 4 sureeeee
Paladin has burst proc damage. As a bear, it can be difficult for me at the very beginning, but after 5 stacks of lacerate, everything falls into place, and I can calmly hold the boss on myself.
Did you try with sham tank? No way you can overagro him
Ok, that makes sense.
You probably miss the point on purpose so nvm. Thx for your input.
It’s kinda hard to get a sham tank as a ret pal
