ive been looking at the top 50 retro paladins and it seems most of them have 30% vers 30% mastery and rest goes into 10% haste/crit or totally abandoning one of those stats (more or less)
any thoughts?

yes, you do not need haste or crit for pvp, versa/mastery will give you maxx dmg during your burst windows, other dmg is not important only burst.
