Hi, I’ve just resubbed to wow after not playing since SL and all of my characters are missing their items from their bags and all my gear is replaced with what looks to be levelling gear.
My bank seems to be unaffected and I still have all of my gold.
I have an authenticator so I don’t believe my account is compromised.
Is this a known issue and can it be fixed?
You chose the gear update feature? Your items should be in the mail.
No gear update chosen, I do notice this is available on some of my lower level characters but the vast majority of my other characters don’t have this feature next to their names and every character that I’ve logged on with so far has nothing in their bags except for some new levelling weapons and all new levelling gear equiped.
Also in my bags on each character are the legion artifact weapons for some bizarre reason.

This definitely sounds like the gear update was used at some point in the past.
The way that it works though is your old gear is sent back to you via in-game mail, so if it was done a long time ago those mails would have already expired.
Unfortunately there would be no way to recover anything lost this way, though it sounds like your characters are in good shape to get up and running again, and with your bank and gold still intact I hope nothing too valuable was lost.
Hopefully you can find your feet again without too much trouble and start digging into some of the new content ahead of you!
I am a bit sad to hear that my items are gone though, I guess after not playing for so long who knows what could have been in my bags.
At least it wasn’t a result of my account being hacked or compromised.
