Returning player help please!

Hi, I haven’t been on WOW for about 6 years. I left about 2 weeks after MOP was released I think. My character was a level 89 DPS Paladin. I re downloaded a free trial last week and have levelled numerous different accounts to level 20. I then decided to re-sub with my old account today.
I’m totally lost. I don’t understand the difference between classic and whatever the new one is? There was only ever one option and one game now it’s totally lost me, lol.
Can someone explain to me please, are there now two games? The classic version and a new version? If so which do I play? Should I make a new character and level from the beginning or continue levelling to Paladin?

Thank you for reading!

Welcome back!

It’s simple enough.

WoW proceeds by adding expansions. After Mists, there was Warlords expansion up to level 100, then Legion up to level 110, now Battle for Azeroth up to 120.

That’s WoW, or now sometimes called WoW Retail, and that’s where your Paladin is.

A year ago, Blizzard made WoW Classic, a recreation of the original game from 2005, up to level 60. That is also available for play.

Two separate games.

If you add gametime to your WoW account, you can pley either of them, or both. The same month of gametime pays for both. Which is nice.

Which do you play? Whichever you want. Or both.

I would suggest you start with your old Paladin, and just get the feel of playing the game again to start, until it becomes feeling familiar.
OR
Start a new character on WoW Retai if you prefer, if you fancy a change or can’t get into your old Paladin.

If you do start a new character, I suggest making it on Draenor realm if it’s a Horde, or Silvermoon realm if it’s Alliance. Realm populations have shifted since Mists, and your realm of Grim Batol is not as well populated as it was then.

If you continue playing your Paladin, you can continue playing it up to level 110 with your gametime, but you will have tyo upgrade your account to BfA if you want to level above 110 to 120.

or pre-purchase the Complete Collection Shadowlands Heroic with BfA if you expect to be playing for that long (another 7-8 months, say) or want to boost your character to 120. I do not recommend this; you will be very lost if you boost now.

Thank you very much!
So I’ve been back on my Paladin and it is saying I can’t do certain things as I have a “starter account” what does this mean please? When I log in it says “wow1 or wow2” How can I go to level 110 if I didn’t buy after cataclysm or MOP? Not sure which I last bought.
Thank you for the server recommendations! I absolutely adore playing a paladin so don’t want to change that. However I might level from 1 as I feel totally lost in the game. I have a lot of pets and mounts, are they tradeable if I were to make a new paladin or would they remain stuck to my old paladin? Sorry, like I say I really can’t remember how stuff works lol. Also which professions would you recommend for a Ret Paladin?

Thank you!

OK, you need to sort out your account first.

You say you have 2 WoW accounts, WOW1 and WOW2.

A “Starter Account” means that the account currently has no game time available. With no gametime, you can play characters only up to level 20. If you have characters above level 20 on the account, you can’t log into them.

Have you added game time to one of your accounts? If not, they would both be Starter Accounts.

If you have added game time to one of the accounts, you can play up to level 110 on that account.

All pets and mounts are shared between all characters on a Battle.net account. (Just to confuse things!) I suspect your Battle.net account must hold both your WoW1 and WoW2 accounts, so any new character you make will automatically have all your existing pets and mounts.

Professions have been downgraded to dirt status over the years, so they are much less important for gameplay than they once were. You can feel free to pick any professions you like. Traditionally, Mining and Blacksmithing would suit a Paladin, but because of the changes, Blacksmithing will give you no substantial benefits, and it’ll break your heart if you try to skill it up as you level. You level too fast these days for professions to keep up. Also, Professions become relevant only in BfA, above level 110. So pick whatever you like! Pwesonally, for levelling, I’m inclined to go Mining and Herbing, because Herbing gives very decent XP along the way.

Thanks again for your invaluable advice! So I’ve created a new Paladin on the Draenor Server like you suggested  I’m enjoying levelling from the beginning again and have started a few dungeons now that I’ve hit level 15 to refresh myself. I definitely paid for game time and was able to log into my old pala but when I tried the pet battle it said starter accounts aren’t allowed to do this. So I will find out if my new pala can go above 20 (fingers crossed!)
Ah I took up mining and blacksmithing as found these brilliant 6 years ago for my pala haha. I’ll swap the blacksmithing to Herbalism. Are they worth selling on the market place at all? The stuff I mine and pick?
Also for levelling am I best off sticking to the normal route of one quest to another until I get to my max level? and if I do dungeons in between questing will I out level the area I’m questing in?
Sorry if these questions seem silly I really am rusty lol.
Thanks again!

Ahhh.

Blizzard restrict some things for up to 72 hours after payment, and one of those thing can be boosts for reactivated accounts. I guess it’s in case the account is being hacked. It may be that you are still in that period. Try again today and tomorrow. If it still doesn’t allow you, it will be worth checking out then, but I suspect that’s what’s going on.

Surprisingly, Peacebloom seems to fetch a good price on Draenor:

though I doubt a lot is being sold. Worth a try! Herbing brings in decent gold from BfA herbs, not so much below that. There are a few Ores and Bars that still sell well from Mining, though, even though they are from old expansions.

If you’re gold-aware, Green Bind on Equip gear that drops for you from mobs may being you insane profits. There’s a reason for that … just, if you’re at the AH, and you have some Greens you could sell, check out the prices, and don’t sell them to vendors until you’ve done that.

You can drop Herbing at 120 if you want to take up Blacksmithing again. Professions are now all fractured. You can learn BfA Blacksmithing without ever learning Blacksmithing from older expansions. Decide when you hit 120.

Levelling has changed. Really changed. We have what is known as scaling. With scaling, all mobs scale to your level. So, for example, when you’re 40, you can go to (what was) a level 25 zone, and you will see the mobs there as 40, and you will get full XP credit for quests there, and you will get level 40 rewards. There are reasons I detest this, but it does have the virtue for you of allowing you a great deal of latitude in what you do: you will not outlevel zones. At all. At least, within limits. The beginning zones up to 10 (or is it 20?) stay for characters up to level 10, but zones above that will increase with you all the way to 60.

So level wherever you like, and do whatever dungeons you like. There will be no quests going Green and then Grey.

However, there is also a Quarantine Special on at the moment: everybody levels twice as fast. So it’s likely you’ll hit 60 quite quickly.

Please do post again if/when you have more questions or want a hand with anything.
