Returning Player

Hey all, recently got myself a new PC, i haven’t had one since 2014. I installed WoW first and foremost because I used to play back in 2014.

The current expansion then (or the last i remember playing, was MoP)

I was just wondering if anyone has any advice for a returning player after this long of a break?

I logged in last night for the first time in 8 years, and the UI scared the crap out of me, there is loads of new stuff…

My question is, TLDR, where do I start? (restart)

Thanks, Jack.

Most likely, just prepare for the the new expansion in nov 28. Decide your main class/es, perhaps farm some transmogs and etc.

Right now, going in seriously is not worth the effort of the pre-end game chores before you can do serious pvp, raiding,m+ and etc .

Welcome back!

It’s been a long time. Things have changed. Give yourself a break - this is like learning all over again, at least for the first week or so.

Here’s a guide to what has changed since Mists, but I don’t especially recommend studying it too hard. https://www.wowhead.com/returning-player-guide-changes-mists-of-pandaria

If things don’t seem to be as you remember them, they probably aren’t. :stuck_out_tongue: Or it could be your memory. I notice a lot of returners remembering things that were never in the game at all. It happens.

I agree with Lynlia that there is no point in trying to push hard for progress in Shadowlands. Dragonflight arrives November 28, and we are all expecting pre-patch around Oct 25.

I would recommend getting your character or characters levelled to 50, ready for pre-patch.

I am assuming that a) you haven’t bought Shadowlands and b) that Shadowlands will become free one pre-patch hits. So I think you can get your characters to 50, which is the pre-Shadowlands level, and then go the rest of the way to 60 during pre-patch, without habing to pay for Shadowlands.

Levelling is MUCH MUCH faster than you remember.

There is now an Embassy in each of Stormwind and Orgrimmar. You will find it on the map. In Stormwind it is beside the Lake. Chromie is outside it under a tree. If you speak to her, she will synchronise you with any expansion, so you can level to 50 in any expansion you like. We call this Chromie Time.

You haven’t seen Warlords of Draenor, Legion, or Battle for Azeroth. You can pick any one of the three to get you to 50. Personally, I’d go with either of the first two. Warlords has the famous Garrison, and Legion has the Legendary Weapons, and both have excellent questing and zones.

For reference, the sites youwill want to bookmark are:

https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/ for all about building and playing your class

https://www.wowhead.com/ for everything else: quests, items, maps, all that.

YouTube has everything you might want to know, as well!

This is an absolutely MASSIVE 2-hour+ video, but broken up into 30-60 second chapters, and I recommend it as a quick refresher of anything you’re uncertain about.

The only thing it doesn’t cover is Chromie Time.

If you have any more questions, PLEASE post again!

Hmm.At this point anything you do that we did so far for legendaries, dinars, reputations will change in 1 month.
You might want to have Shadowlands flying and Renowned achievement (Renown 80 with a covenant) which is useful probably. For alts.
Shadowlands flying is at 66 Renown i think. Then there is a vendor next to Oribos flight master to get 60 Renown immediately.
The Maw campaign quests for using mount there.
Well generally the campaign quests to unlock a few things you might be interested.
Zereth flying also requires some achievements done.(Rares and some other things).
Still it is a month we say “farewell” to Shadowlands so i am not sure what to advise other than see the story and spend some time to see the expansion before the new one.

Not sure if I misinterpreted what you meant, but once you unlock SL flying, all alts can fly in SL regardless of Renown.

There’s no chores left you can buy renown and conduits

The only thing I can think of adding to Gráinne’s excellent post is that there is a 50% xp buff at the moment so you may get to 50 more quickly than you expect.
Also the New & Returning Player forum may have answers to some of your questions. https://eu.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/c/guides/new-returning-player-questions-guides/236

As mentioned, just level up a character ready for DF - its not worth going ham on current expansion now. Also can we nominate Grainne for MVP?? Her posts are amazingly detailed and helpful

I edited it.For perfectionists.

Just log on and honestly do what you want. Ignore pretty much everything people told you on this thread because most of them think WoW is a job and you must “achieve” certain targets to play World of Warcraft.
Just do whatever you want to do at your own pace. If you want to figure out where to go to quest just visit a Hero’s Board at the capital city. If you get a quest automatically when you log on the first time then do that one. The game expects you to complete Battle for Azeroth so you could do that if you want but I’d just literally do what you feel like.

I would level some characters (at least one but maybe a couple). Do the stories of the expansions you’ve missed, especially Legion. Maybe do one character per expansion. Just go through them and read the quests, look around at the landscapes, even though some aren’t great.
Don’t race to Max level as we’re so near the end of this expac that it isn’t worth trying to get into that for now.

Dragonflight Pre-Patch will be out in around four weeks, then you can get some catch up gear and be ready to do that expansion. At max level DF you can get back into end game, dungeons, raids or PVP (if that’s your thing).
