Returning to WoW after like 7 years: The Cata classic experience

So, i decided to return to Wow to check out cata classic, i really like cata back in the day so why not right?
My main concern was toxicity, because most of what i heard was that it has gotten substantionally worse over time.

I had severely understimated how bad it actually is however…

It feels like you can’t talk to people in random dungeons without it turning into a flame war, everybody seems to react to EVERYTHING you say as if you where trying to insult their entire family tree.
I just did a random twilight heroic, i took the blue buff so i have to stand still for it to work, i asked the tank and i qoute: Tank i took the blue buff so pls dont move a lot
His response? Completely blasting me saying my dps is trash and i have no right to request anything from him, we cleared 1 trash pack in total before he made this conclussion.

This sounds extremely overexaggerated, and i wish it was… Most dungeon runs, seem to have something similar to this going on, to be fair when my gear was really bad i did not get kicked, what instead happened was: My items where ninjad, i got called a leech and was told to frick off.

I just thought it was wild to actually experience the state of this game currently, i guess the community in general kinda suffers from the Ashamed of nothing, offended by everything type of mentality but taken to a bit of an extreme.

All i can say is, if you are in the state of mind you need to actively ruin other peoples playtime by being a complete PoS because they are not up to your video gamer god standards, i know you won’t seek help so i won’t bother telling you to do so lol

Edit: Also, how in the name of almighty ham did people get worse at the game in general than 15 years ago? I have seen people fail more on Cataclysm dungeon mechanics in 1 month of playing now than i have seen in the entire span of O.G cataclysm, 15 years ago, how, just how?

I also have a feel that most people attitude comes from what blizzard’s attitude is about the game. They don’t care to react, they don’t care to give hotfixes and people are just angry about everything…

I don’t play a lot of warrior or even melee dps these days, but picking the blue buff and expecting you, mobs and tank to stand still in twilight dungeons sounds like a pretty terrible call, imo. No warrior expert, but I’d probably go bronze buff and try to avoid taking damage, instead.

With that said though, yes RDF with randoms can be a very toxic place to be. Everyone always assumes the absolute worst of others (sometimes rightly so), and it seems like many grown mens ego is very fragile in this game.

Most of these random rushers expect their 4th alt for GDKP to be boosted by 400+ilvl players only because that is average ilvl of their mains, but even 385+ ilvl would rather go to DS normal instead of doing heroic+ twilight, unless they are helping a guildie or a friend.

As for blue buff you need to run aheard of group right to next pack before fight ends to be able to stack it up. Personally I do not like it, since mobility is everything in instances so I use bronze buff on melee and when I was actively farming Twilight on my 380-385 ilvl mage main.

Sadly this is on Blizzard as there is no protection agains ninjas rolling on items their class can’t use, even on tokens. Only advice go to twilight with some friends, guildies or premade group.

Well some people get older and inpatient and think it is loss of their precious DPS to move out of void zones and cleaves. Others just never played original Cataclysm. While in general everyone is just rushing and thinks it is healer’s job to pull them out of the mess they got themselves into.

nah don’t put this on old age, as you become older you grow more impatient with the apes, you don’t become ape yourself, they were apes to begin with. with that said it’s all about adapting to your party, if i don’t need to drink every other pack, and the tank isn’t high maintenance, what do i care if DD#2 eats 300k of totally avoidable damage, I’m there to heal anyway, but when they fail the Corla beams or the dark command interrupt, or generally making the run slower, that’s when I’m triggered and I’ll make them wait for a new healer

I take back what I said btw. After trying some melee dps myself, blue buff is probably the way to go for certain dps specs (even melee), assuming the boss allows you to mostly stand still.

Most wow Players are just addicts who dont even enjoy playing that much, but they Just cant stop. They are tired of the boring grind over and over again. Thats why they are extremly toxic and angry, yet they say the enoy the grind. Only realy new people to the game are chilled

It’s funny because these issues were not present during classic right up until the dungeon finder was introduced with cross realm parties.

Before then and even in alpha or beta groups or ToC 5 hc in phase 3 where the content was kind of challenging there still wasn’t rampant toxicity in groups.

Why? Everyone was on the same realm and if you treated people poorly you would develop a reputation and others wouldn’t want to play with it in future or include you in their guild. There were sections on realm discords to highlight this kind of player behaviour and warn others.

With cross realm it doesn’t matter but you’ll never see that random guy from Firemaw again. It breaks down the social aspect of the game since everyone is a random and more randoms can be found by pressing a button. and unfortunately as research shows the more anonymity and lack of consequences you offer humans the more they’ll act selfishly and with total disregard for others.

It’s very much repeating the mistakes of retail.

do i need to use the FFXIV argument again? ok here we go, it has an RDF feature, what it doesn’t have is dps meters (i love details! but not to boost my ego or to find reasons to kick people, to actually see the details of the fight, what really went wrong etc)
it doesn’t have people abusing every feature possible
and no it’s not a more simple hippie kind of game, the lack of addons (you can but it’s bannable) like bigwigs/dbm makes it even more difficult.

as for that research, have you actually used facebook/tiktok? maybe it’s a country specific thing, but in my country people show their real names and their faces and say/write stuff that are straight up illegal, they just don’t care, X which is more nickname oriented is a church when you compare it with the boomers of fb/tiktok, on the other hand privacy advocates are legit the least selfish people you will find on the internet, blame human nature and lack of policies i guess?

I haven’t played FF at all, but personally I think dps’ing would be kinda boring without some metric (such as a dmg meter) to track your performance.

I also think it’s good to have to see who’s the weakest link when the boss dying too slow is the reason for being hardstuck. Like, I don’t really care if someone is underperforming if you have someone pumping to make up for it. But especially in some dungeons (and on some bosses) you basically need the group to collectively perform at a certain level to succeed.

But with that said, it obviously can be abused in negative ways.

it kinda is, I’m not there atm for three reasons, the forced dialogs (no instant quest text), the lack of addons, and the wow battlegrounds

It wasn’t challenging and they were toxic already. At some point it was so bad I decided to never ever run betas with randoms

as wow veteran ‘‘till BFA when i quit playing’’ and FF14 Mentor, i can say
you don’t need DPS meter at all to find out who is weakest link in the Raid.
what dps meter providing is a toxic way to act and react within the encounter you’re doing.
in FF you have raid log, and battle log to see what went wrong afterward when the fight is done, or failed.
when its done, most people going to enjoy finishing the content regardless instead of researching who was the bad player.
when the fight failed, you can see aha that dude was bad, lets advice him, or maybe search for replacement in party finder.
also there is among hardcore raider, ultimate Raid a dps tool but thats only to be usefull to set up dps checks. as a 8 players raid every cooldown does matter. even the def once. and you need to time those in time to clear the content otherwise imposible. so you get dps meter in ff but among less than 5% of the playerbase.

while in wow, every random joe has a metet and you can see middle in the fight the player X sucks ,so lets /votekick them . whichs something isn’t fair for undergeared players or first timer.

you don’t need a matric tool to clear the content. this is purley wow players bad habbit thanks to the addons culture they have.

I think the original intent for dps meters (and the way how I use it mostly, especially when I play a class which I don’t have a lot of experience wit) is to check up on yourself. Compare yourself with other players, check what they are doing if they are performing better than you, to learn and improve for yourself. Or just to check up - my simulation says I could be doing that amount of damage, I am a that level, cool, or I am below that what could I change?
So it is a very useful tool to check up on yourself, I think it was not meant to be used to blame others. It can be even used as a help method for others. When I see a survival hunter rolling 15k dps and I see cobra shot is the top dps ability, I can say “Hey, you could improve by using Explosive Shot whenever it is ready” instead of instantly kicking said hunter. It is literally one sentence and if he/she reacts to the advice it willbe an immidiate improvement. (Example taken form an actual dungeon run, except that the hunter in that didn’t read or thought to know better and kept spamming cobra shot)
But for most people, even that seems to be too much effort, kicking is just faster, especially with a dps.
