With the option of having 50 characters per realm, the current list feels rather confusing. Sure you can drag and drop characters to organize it better but with just one column the whole thing is unnecessarily cumbersome to work with. Expanding it to two columns will allow you to organize it better and have a better overview over the characters. Like in the mockup, I’ve organized my alliance to the left and horde to the right.
I’m also thinking that adding the ability to create a divider to split the columns up, you can make sections / groups of characters for whatever purpose you’d like.
Best thing about your entire post is the dragonflight bit on the picture. Made me laugh more than it should.
Anyway, nice idea, I see no downsides. I’m sure someone will be along in a min to tell you it’s rubbish and would ruin the game and make them unsub, as this is the wow forum, but I like your idea.
It’s simple
it’s helpful
It’s more intuitive.
it doesn’t change the basic UI too much.
As a huge altoholic who is also easily confused i’d appreciate something like this greatly. They’ve revamped the actual character creation screen, now it’s the selection screen’s turn.
I love all of it but my favourite part is being able to search for names/classes. Yes please!!
I really like the idea. It could also be helpfull if the list scrolled sideways and not from the bottom. I know it might sound weird, but the list will be much shorter and it would be much easier to find the character u are looking for.
Scrolling horisontally is really counter intuitive and won’t work with traditional scroll wheels on mice. It’s also not easy to work with when it comes to reorganizing the characters without having a buffer zone, as the breakpoints would make the list jump too much.
But scrolling normally with mouse can just scroll the list, just sideways. Having two columns will make it easier for people with around 20 characters to find their characters, but for them its probably not that hard to find their characters even now. People with 35-40 or more characters would still need to scroll a lot to find the character they are looking for.
I guess it’d expand only if you have more chars? It’d look kinda empty and take up too much space for non altoholics ^^
Also, I keep thinking if it wouldn’t feel too squeezed if the char has pets/totem around. Some racial backgrounds might feel cut off too.
Most importantly, I’ve just realized Blizz displays breaking news on the left which is a pretty big block of text sometimes. You need to take everything into account.
Very true, I didn’t think about that in the initial mockup. I’ve not visited the design since then but I reckon that Blizz’ UX and UI designers can come up with a solution to these things.
Yeah, I like the idea of all kinds of QoL and facelifts to the game in general, it just needs to be perfected.
What Ishayo mentioned is also true, the character is in the center of your attention atm and everything is tailored to it, it’d need more thought put into it.
Usually, when people pitch a change to you, they will include a bunch of mockups of what could be done and how it could look and then you follow up with a discussion based on that so that you end up with the best possible outcome and nothing gets missed (ideally )
I get that, I’m new to game UI stuff, and this was just a quickly thought up concept to show that there was in fact room to improve.
I do graphical design for print mainly so it’s a bit different from what I’m used to. That said, if I truly wanted to pitch a serious idea with the goal of it being adapted, I’d definitely put a lot more work in.
I guess the best way would be to complitely redisigne the way our charactersa are displayed. The thing we have now if just a list which doent look anything special and it takes a lof of space.
Maybe they can make it so that instead of just the name they display the picture of characters face (similar to what we have here on the forum). That way people will be able to visually see which character is which. Under tha character pic they can write the name and the level of the character. I also have 2 ideas about how to display class and faction. Border of the picture (or backgroud) can change depending of the faction, or maybe border could change colour depending on the class. While for class and faction they can also jsut put a small image next to a name.
The only thing that would be missing is a zone where our character is in game, but that can be shown by hovering over a character (as I believe thats not the msot important information). And on hover on they can also show even more info about our characters like how much gold we have, our item lvl etc.
