Blizzard removed that difference all together, when they stopped making tier sets.
Have you seen what druids have had to wear since BFA release? Everything that is NOT druidic. And the leather Uldir set looks like the perfect plate set. All leather items seems to be based on melee classes, and especially rogues. The Darkshore cloth set, looks like a perfect druid set, but I can’t wear it, because the label says “cloth”, even though it would have made me look like a druid. Imo anyways. Have you seen the moons and feathers on the Alliance set?
Heck, even adding those sets that you can wear regardless of armor type, like the Yeti suit and the new RAF items, show how your armor identity is becoming more and more irrelevant visually.
I really hope they will realize this themselves one day, and unlock transmog items regardless of armor type. I just think it should still be unlocked by the correct armor user(gathering mogs over time is one of the activities I like personally though), but I’d like it moggable regardless of your armor type.
I was originally a fan of “preserving” armor identity, but that was until the day I realized I would never look like a druid again, unless I mog into old expansions items.
I do hope tier sets will come back though, and tier sets can also be class locked imo. Just free all other items of mogging restrictions based on armor type.
Bolded stuff to be annoying, 'cause I’m having a HUGE gripe with not getting any new DRUID looking items anymore.

Hahaha, I can see what you did there

Thanks for reminding me.
The heritage sets are another example of armor identity out of the window, by Blizzard. E.g. dwarves don’t have a robe version for their casters. You’ll solely look like a warrior or something similar, wearing the dwarven heritage. Same can be said about the gnomish heritage set.
Come on people, those of you who stil think we have armor identity left… have you looked at the items created since BFA release?
Also, again, Uldir leather set… who would have guess that is a caster set? It looks all melee plate to me. Not even a touch of caster, or leather, tied to the apperance.

The best example of that is the pajama mog from this year’s Blizzcon, to many examples like that would totally ruin class identities in the game in my POV.

Then they have some really major screw ups to sort, when it comes to certain classes and specs. Mine being one.
My plate classes have it easy, so does my clothies. My leather and mail casters are stuck with items that completely crashes with previous class fantasy, created by Blizzard in the past.
Wouldn’t be better they add tier class sets again?
I don’t wanna look like a naga as a DK…

All the high end gear already look like a cluster fudge cloth looks like plate leather looks like plate and mail has never looked like mail its always been plate looking.
I think people really need to stop thinking of players as classes, but as characters.
This is an RPG after all, and everyone wants to emit some sort of character.
Archetypes are fine and dandy, but people are different. We have countless warrior NPC’s just running around shirtless. They’re either brave or stupid (or both), but even a shirt would provide them with more protection.
See my logic there? If a warrior can run in nothing but breeches, then he ought to be able to put on a robe or a leather jerkin if he so wishes.

Sorry but I’m against of your idea of anyone being able to wear anything and losing the class identities because of that in the game. Besides most western successful RPG-s if you look at any examples from the Dragon age games, Witcher and even Kotor series have distinct way of clothing based on the archetype of the classes.
Geralt is not running around dressed like the mages in the Witcher, smuggler and sorcerer type of the character don’t dress the same as the jedi knights and the sith warriors in the Kotor/SWTOR, templars in the DA games don’t run shirtless or dressed like the archers/rogues etc.
Instead of the ruining class fantasies I’m for the idea of having more good looking distinct armors for each class archetype. Most favored by the players WoW expansions in the past were actually the ones in which class fantasies were polished the best and in which we had both specific class quests and the sets, instead of everything being bland and uninspiring.
Armor archetypes are very important…

Evry class should be uable to use all except tier sets/Classhall/CM sets, and artifacts.
Who should be classwide not speclocked.
Like i can run Around like this on my warrior.
So i dont reall see issue people have with being able to use other armor types.
heck i cant I fight in full underwear via a toy(moroes famous polish).
and without hide all but my legs which i can use skimpiest possible. And i could tank with it.
So why are people against me using like leather wraps for armor or cloth sandals.

But a hunter mogging leather, or a plate char being able to use cosmetic cloth, leather or mail (so not the class sets or tier sets) is gamebreaking according to them…
and im basicly naked and could even tank if i wanted.
So i dont see issue here
Honestly, it’s the same discussion in Final Fantasy 14 and that game has even more outfits to completely break any sort of visual integrity between the jobs.
Personally, I think that there’s some merit in the idea behind visual integrity. But, there’s little point upholding it in games that have long since jumped the shark.
But muh immersion is broken if warrior transmogs to cloth dress.
meanwhile tier sets/high end gear look like christmas tree on acid with all the effects and lights also wielding a sword that is 3 times larger than your character fighting a boss that is 30 times larger than your character.
Also most talk about any immersion goes down the toilet when most people fly by with their mounts.

Also on a tank i could use reflicting prism,or any apereance swap toys on a caster with a dress and then be a dk with giant life stealing axe in a dress tanking giant monsters.
Or i could tank as a goren or something,or as a murloc(swap apereance with pet toy).
I dont see issue with being able to use other armor types, escpially not for Rp.
As npcs already do it all time, and it would be able to make far better looking sets.
Like leather has multiple shoulders that are only 1 which would go amazing with cloth sandals and the dragon mail chest(thats bascily tatoos and not chest piece) but nope all different armor types so cant use it
What are you talking about exactly? You can obviously see the difference between classes without too much difficulty.
Or do you want to tell me that you believe that people are so mentally dead that they get easily confused and are unable to guess, that the dude shooting fireballs at them is a Mage?
I hope it does.
And it really wouldn’t be all that outrageous, considering there are low level item pieces that are mismatched in what armor type they are, and there being armor sets that don’t require an armor type to 'mog in to (Hello Heritage Armors and Garrison Guard sets!)
To call something “Disgusting”, it’d have to be an absolutely abhorrent idea. This is not an abhorrent idea.
battlemages in the distance Oh, hey there, nice to meet you too!
That’s their opinion, which they try to pawn off as a fact, which makes them automatically wrong.

No thanks…
If you want to look like a paladin, roll a paladin, don’t fake a rogue in plate.
(OTOH, letting us mog a MH+OH combo into a staff, or vice-versa, would be welcomed and completely inconsequential to everything.)
