Rig Upgrade Support

Hey there guys,

I am looking for some feedback and help from those with more tech knowledge than me. I built my PC around the summer of 2010 and since then I’ve had all components besides my GPU. I think it’s time I invest in a new processor, motherboard and perhaps RAM but wanted some feedback or suggestions!

Current Rig:

Motherboard: Asus Sabretooth P67
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 (Zotac)
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-2600K CPU @3.40GHZ
RAM: 8GB Ram
Running on Windows 10 64-Bit

I’ve been suggested the following;

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 8x 3.7GHz
Motherboard: ASROck X470 Master SLI/AC
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR4 (Can’t remember the exact model someone suggested to me)

The overall budget is between 800 and 1000 Euros for all three components so I’m hoping to get some help from you guys!

Hellooooo. While that Ryzen CPU is good, unless you’re a content creator you’re probably better off getting an Intel CPU if you just want to play games or are upgrading for the sake of WoW. WoW will always run better with an Intel CPU (Ryzen is fine too if you’re okay with a few less frames) in which case I’d recommend getting the I5-9600k which you can overclock too. Pair it with a Z390 motherboard and 16 GB RAM that’s at least over 2600 mhz. You’ll save money while getting fantastic performance this way, though WoW will always be CPU bound so keep that in mind. Enjoy!

Hey there Tehuwo!

Thanks a bunch for your reply. The issue is that I am actually not too comfortable with overclocking. I’ve found a couple of different Z390s so some feedback would be appreciated!

  1. Gigabyte Z390 Aorus pro Wifi
  2. MSI Z390 Tomahawk
  3. Gigabyte Z390 Gaming X

Also would you say the i7 8700k is a more solid long term choice than the i5?

Sorry accidentally replied with my alt haha!

While the I7-8700k is a solid CPU it’s last gen and for gaming the i5 I recommended is really all you need. For the same kind of money (give or take, perhaps for an extra 20 Euros) you can get an i7 9700k but that’s overkill for WoW and it comes without hyperthreading this time around.

All of those motherboards are solid but the third one from Gigabyte is probably the best you can get out of those. ^^

Edit: Also, you can get a modest overclock with little to no risks or drawbacks such as 4.8 ghz. It’s a matter of turning up the modifier and your motherboard will do the rest. Just make sure you get a solid cooler.

If you are not in a hurry AMD is believed to release new set of CPUs mid-2019 so it might be worth waiting and seeing how they perform and how Intel responds.

AMD and Intel are fairly close for most games so choice is really just matter of taste and price. If Intel is cheaper, go Intel, if AMD is cheaper go AMD. Intel has slight advantage but higher the resolution, smaller the difference at least in non-WoW games.
