So with Sylvanas abandoning her people and Bolvar effectively a nobody once again in terms of power, who is left to control the Scourge? This seems like an opportune moment for the Deathlord and his horsie crew to step up, and into those vacant shoes.
Or is it even possible to control them without the helm now?
Any local necromancer seems to have control over a handful of undead if islands have shown us anything as for the dks âŠ. I know many donât want to hear this but death knights are just sorta meh now.
The Helm of Domination is a tool to control the scourge on Azeroth - itâs a powerful artifact indeed, but not he main source of power for the Lich King. The Lich Kingâs true source of personal power was destroyed when Frostmourne was shattered.
It would be a mistake to assume that Bolvarâs power as the Lich King only came down to having the Helm of Domination on his head. Even without as strong a connection to the Shadowlands as he may have had, he remains an exceedingly powerful and unique Death Knight. Not only because he was the Lich King, and remains in contact with what it on the other side of the veil, but also because he was an exceedingly powerful man in life. Bolvar Fordragon was no joke, and could easily have gone toe-to-toe with the likes of Mograine. Not only is he naturally powerful (so powerful that Arthas personally sought to turn him - and letâs not forget how powerful Dranosh was!) as an undead champion, but he like has unique powers in the form of the everburning red dragon flames that purified him. He is a completely different creature compared to your average Death Knight.
As we learn more about Anime and the afterlife, it seems likely to me that one of the most important factors in determining the strength of an undead - and especially a Death Knight - is their anima attached to their soul. It makes sense in the grand scheme of things. Arthas wanted the most powerful and experienced champions of the Alliance and the Horde to come for him, so that he could create the most powerful Death Knight legion imaginable. The people selected for the transformation are not random nobodies or regular townsfolk - they are fallen heroes and champions. What sets a Death Knight apart from a regular Forsaken must thus be the anima they can draw on when turned.
In short, I donât think we should discredit Bolvar just yet - he has unique knowledge and power, even as a former Lich King. I wouldnât be surprised if the pre-patch revolves around the restless Scourge, and that the conclusion to the Ebon Bladeâs history as a faction is that they, along with Bolvar, become the guardians of the Veil in the future, or stay behind to fill the void left behind by the Jailer, as eternal keepers of the damned. It would be a fitting end to the Scourge plot-thread that has been running since Warcraft 3 - that, in the end, those damned by undeath found a new purpose in guarding the boundary between life and death.
But as far as the Scourge goes, there is no one to control such a vast network of undead. Even Arthas, as the Lich King, struggled to maintain control, and factions would occasionally break loose. Hell, The Forsaken and the Ebon Blade are both examples of powerful (and large) factions breaking off from his influence and doing their own thing. And most of the Scourge consists of far less intelligent Undead, that have no interest in forming factions or building societies. Weâll probably have to do what we can to simply contain the problem.
That was such an ouch for anyone who cared about the lore and the story. I frankly donât know what would drive anyone to say something like that in view of the public - even if we knew this was their attitude, itâs just so sad to hear someone literally admit that, yeah, WoW has no story, itâs just a vessel to monetize the Warcraft franchise in whatever way is popular at the time.
Anyone remember when the Burning Legion was this crazy and awesome Steampunk threat from outer space that burnt planets? Remember when they apparently left all of those engineers behind and instead attacked Azeroth with a bunch of big dudes with clubs, going; âGURRRH! ME STOMPY!â ^^â
When I saw that new Kelâthuzad model I genuinely believed heâd come back and control them⊠but so far that doesnât seem to be the case.
Iâm thinking the Shadowlands-prepatch will have to deal with this then, considering theyâre on the loose now.
I do wonder how the Horde will be brought into this since Iâm guessing Bolvar will contact his old pals in the Alliance for help. Maybe something is planned for Eversong Woods/Ghostlands?
It does seem as though the Ebon Blade are going to play quite a big part.
I donât know why. But I feel as though Darion is going to take some sort of role akin to the LK or Jailor at the end. It just feels fitting. The undead and the Mograines just go hand in hand.
To be fair, Forsaken broke out from Scourge influence when Illidan smashed the Frozen Throne, that serves as amplification relay for helm powers.
And i doubt Acherus Death Knights were mind controlled. Indocrinated and brainwashed, sure, but if it was mind control, it was just too easy to break.
This i a bit of headcanon, but i believe that they are akin to Kelâthuzad in terms of independent thinking because you need your special forces to think on the spot and quickly adapt. At least thatâs what i would have done on LKs place.
He made them addicted to inflicting pain and i always had the feeling that he had at least some controll over them, and it needed another point of weakness for the controll to be broken.
Realistically (i know i know, its Blizz i use that term loosely) alot has changed in the power structures of the world since the 1st (WC3) and 2nd (Wotlk) invasions.
For example back then nothing could really compete with Naxxramas as a war machine as Gunships wouldnât be able to hold their own against it and the scourge had a few flying necroplis in their arsenal.
Now Azeroth (Primarily the Alliance) has the Vindacaar,Exodar,Ouroboros,Acherus,Fel Hammer,Dalaran plus apparently we can make gun ships like they are nothing now considering how many have been destroyed since Wrath
Then you have the inclusion of some powerful races coming on to the world stage since then such as the Zandalari/Nightborn/Dark Iron/Lightforged/Void Elves/Maghar etc each bringing new magic or tech into the fight.
No Dragon Aspects/Dragon Flights but almost all of the Hyjal Wild Gods are back and kicking.
The Scourge without a leader arenât a world ending threat as they used to be but it would be a war that takes awhile as we assume the number of dead in Icecrown and the Plaguelands is crazy high.
