I already know the answer to this question, however there are some people who I am currently in a discord with who won’t accept my belief nor that of wowpedia that the RPGs books are not canon.
If I am wrong (which is entirely possible) could you please let me know so I can grovel an apology.
They’re non-canon - however, when it comes to for instance troll loas of which there is hundreds if not thousands of different magnitudes, I use from the RPGs freely and don’t batter an eye at the same from others, should they choose to speak of Legba, Lukou or any other non-canon loa: De loa be more in numbers an’ power den mere mortals can count.
Generally non-canon. But honestly I see no issue taking bits and pieces where it doesn’t have a large impact, makes sense and is not contradicted by anything released since. Particularly for bits that they will probably never touch on again.
Using RPGs to learn more about how the tauren view engineering, and how their own engineers fare? Fine.
Using the RPGs to claim worgen have poisoned claws or that Stormwind has X population? Probably not fine.
Sometimes either of those websites are not provided with an actual source of information (mostly it is wiki due to being outdated as hell, but pedia suffers from that as well from time to time), therefore quoting them without looking up the reference is a very risky trick, ngl.
Long story short? They’re non-canon (can you imagine Graven Ones IC? Bleh) but there’s a LOT of material used in them that has leaked back over into the game world.
My personal take? Don’t use them as the gospel, but feel free to poke around them for inspiration. Some of the Epic/Prestige Classes or spells can really make some cool ideas for your next RP battle or storyline!
As far as I recall they are vaguely not canon. By that I mean it has been suggested that not all of the content within the books is not canon by Bliz but no one has sat down to tell us what is and is not canon within them casting doubt on every thing.
You could very well make a guild concept based around something in the RPG only to find Bliz retcon it next patch so it makes trusting the RPG books difficult.
Wowwiki was the original host for the WoW pedia pages, but the whole admin team and content builders moved from that platform to Wowpedia years ago. Tell them that Wowwiki is one of the least reliable WoW info platforms out there because it lacks the dedicated admin team that Wowpedia has.
As for the topic itself, yeah, the RPG books are considered non-canon, but the majority of the elements featured in them have some ties to established canon. Ultimately, I recommend doing what Blizzard does: Tell the story you want while using all the hooks and angles that their old content, canon or non-canon, has provided, while making sure there’s no open conflict between the current canon and the old.
Personally, I take elements from both the canon and the RPG books and make sure they fit the narrative I wish to tell. So long as there’s a chain of events and circumstances that you can explain to describe whatever RPG book concept you’re fascinated with, you do you. Just make sure it doesn’t actively conflict with established lore.
