Ever since he left, there has been a noticeable drop in music quality.
Warcraft music these days is “fine”, but Russell’s music was memorable. It was iconic. It was something else.
I’ll use this thread to share with you one of his last contributions to the Warcraft universe, which I don’t think was actually used in game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9V1MDHaakw
What a man. I hope he one day reads this thread and finds joy in our collective appreciation if his amazing work.
I think the first time I noticed that the music wasn’t what it used to be was SL.
I barely remember any of it apart from that pantomime villain (DUN DUN DAAA) music in the Maw.
Even BFA had some decent music, those sea shanties were pretty good.
I wouldn’t say the quality of music has changed. Valdrakken theme is a fantastic composition and one of my all time favourite pieces in Warcraft. And how awesome is it flying around Nokhud Offensive whilst that theme is pumping away.
However, I can see that the style of music has changed dramatically over the years. But then I’m not sure I would want the orchestral tones that we had in Wotlk and before.
Music in WoW is still top notch, and has never fail to be the best Team in WoW. Unfortunately the Art team has failed us since it seems to be coming more and more cartoony.
Or, at least, in the way the music fits with the areas. This was more noticeable in SL, but it persists in DF.
But it doesn’t seem to me that it’s about the music that he himself wrote so much as the selection and allocation of the music that everyone wrote. He just had such a fine feel for the ambiance of the sub-zones.
And WHO decided to cut off music inside caves in Dragonflight??
Don’t neglect Jaina’s Homeland theme. I want that played at my funeral! Best going home feelz since Dvorak.
