Seems for single core performance, they’re doing better than the i9 10900k, even with the cheaper 5600X cpu.
Going to see what WoW looks like after I get hands on some parts upgrades.
Getting a Crosshair VIII Hero and a 5900X cpu.
Seems to be 30-40% boost in single core performance over the 2700X I have.
But from what I’ve seen from the reviews coming in now, there’s nothing bad about the new AMD processors at all, from single core to multi-core. It just floors the Intel processors completely.
In some games they have like > +40% I’ve ordered 5900X but I’m on the wait list as the initial stock evaporated.
Ordered a 5900X myself, just waiting if I got one or not.
5800X is slightly cheaper but too close to a 5900X
And I can’t justify the £250 more for the 5950X
Thanks for making me feel like s**t
Didn’t mean to, it’s intel that should get their act together and get off their 14nm node.
And if they can’t do that, then get TSMC or another company to make their cpu’s. They really need to improve things.
If it’s any consolation, the 1440p and higher the actual sitaution is only a few frames a second or on par.
Single core though, yeah. It’ll be like that until 11th Gen comes out next year but as I said, time for intel to really get off 14nm.
It was just a joke because i literally have that exact i9 10900k lol
yeah they’re definitely impressive. nice upgrade for people on ryzen 3000 or older. for those of us who have recent intel cpus, it’s not really enough in the real world to warrant an upgrade. 720p medium it’s big, 1440p ultra doesn’t really matter. seems like an easy choice for new systems as well though.
By the way anyone able to even buy the 5000s, I swear it’s like being a younger me asking my dad and my mam to go online to get rolling stone tickets before they sell out.
i read that one of our retailers had 350 5600x, 15 5800x, 15 5900x and 8 5950x according to their website pre-launch. not sure if that was accurate though, but looks like maybe the 5600x had good supply and the rest basically nothing.
5600X is the most cut down SKU and doesn’t need as good silicon as the higher ones - and such silicon usually is more common. Silicon quality is what makes 16 core 5950X/3950X use same or even bit less power than 12 core 5900X/3900X.
Yeah, managed to get a 5900X but due to not paying for weekend postage I’ll get on Tuesday next week at the earliest.
But looking at the performance increase from the 2700X, it’s going to be fun getting a fair more frames on WoW than I do currently. It’s not bad, not had issues even in crowded areas with the 2700x but have noticed some frame rate issues now and again while using my VR headset so.
Also edit 4K videos so I’ll take the four extra cores, still cheaper than a threadripper. Just didn’t see the point in the more expensive asking price for the 5950x which is way overkill for just gaming.
Same for 5900x really. 5600x is enough if you’re just gaming really. Get that and a x570 board and a pcie 4.0 m2 drive and it’s going to blitz through Shadowlands loading screens. Fastest drive right now is Samsung 980 Pro and 1TB of that is about £220 at the moment.
It will be interesting to see how fast Shadowlands loads up if you have a Ryzen 5000 cpu and pair it with Big Navi graphics card since they are using GPU ram as well for loading up things like Playstation 5 does with it’s SSD. If it speeds up loading even more with that combo, but that’s something to test once said hardware is out.
At least it’s using the bandwidth on the 4.0 pci express since graphic cards aren’t really going to saturate that for a while.
i know, but it’s still really bad supply if it’s true that they have 20+ 5600x for every 5800x, esp considering the 5600x sold out. basically nobody got the higher-end models then, same as 3080 and 3090.
another shop here seem to have had 11 5900x and got 257 orders in the first 4 minutes. 30 5950x, 122 orders in 3 minutes. 31 5800x, 183 orders in 3 minutes. interesting that the most interesting cpu out of the higher-end ones had the lowest supply, at least in this shop. they had 100 5600x, so more reasonable spread.
that’s two recent launches that are plagued by not even close to enough supply now, ampere and zen 3. doesn’t make me that hopeful about being able to buy big navi on launch. 6800 xt gonna sell out in like 2 minutes at best probably.
Have to see how many get put on resell sites for way more than asking price. There’s a lot of bots being used to grab such wanted items these days.
at least here the scalping problem isn’t that huge yet. i think the majority of the sold parts actually get used, and a lot of the ones that do get resold get sold at or around the purchase price to avoid having to pay return shipping.
What’s funny is that Nvidia had similar level of launch stock of Ampere as with Turing… but it turns out people decided to upgrade now AMD is relying on TSMC 7nm and that is also a finite capacity - CPU, GPU, consoles and what not plus other 7nm users. For 5nm TSMC is already preparing for Armageddon as aside of Apple and AMD there will be large allocation for Nvidia.
Last night I had to wait until Monday but seems with current lockdown going on and DPD not wanting to have millions more packages to do on Monday, my 5900X is being delivered today so, can upgrade this weekend than next weekend.
But as for stock allocation at TSMC, that’s usually all done years ahead in preperation but I’m not going to go for AM5 next year as it’s new, will no doubt have a lot of bugs with bios and all. I’ll just get the 5nm+ revision where things are fixed, but sure AMD and TSMC will be heading to 3nm by then.
Faster SSD’s have no effect on load times in games
Got the cpu today, so installed it. Had to do a cpuless bios update to beta one to get it to post but it’s working now.
No reinstallation of Windows 10 needed, just sorted out devices drives and done.
Wasn’t completely effortless in upgrading but glad it’s done now.
keep an eye on subsequent bios updates, allegedly more features coming there.
Yeah, keeping eye on temps though.
Not sure my corsair h115i Pro is able to keep it that cool. 65c idle and 77c at full load. May need to look at bigger radiator or more efficient cooler for a ryzen 9 like a 360mm radiator or something than 280mm.
edit
Seems the temp issue was temporary and sorted itself out after a few hours, probably the thermal paste needed settling in. Idle temps are 34-41c now so happy with that, it’s about normal what the 2700x had.
WoW seems more responsive and not a lot of frame drops, so the single core improvements is helping matters, even in crowded areas so I can see the cheaper 5600x being able to cope a bit more with that.
My 2700x must’ve been bottlenecking the 2080ti though when it came to playing a raytrace game such as control as the card is able to fully power up to higher frames on ultra RTX settings and set off the fans to help cool things there.
Only downsides but it’s an asus issue was that the motherboard stuff did install overwolf and other programs I didn’t need. But those are easily uninstalled.
