Sámi letters not considered letters :(

Why isn’t Sámi language letters considered letters when naming a character? :frowning:
We use special letters like Á, Š, Č, Đ, Ŧ Ŋ and Ž that all have distinctive sounds from A, S, C, D, T, N and Z

I’m also unable to write Sámi characters in general in the game without copy-pasting the letters

Sámi is already considered an endangered language, would love to be able to use it in-game!

Character names are most likely restricted due back-end database restrictions or similar legacy restrictions.

As for in-game typing, I tested it quickly and I was able to type characters you mentioned just fine in-game when I was using “Sami Extended Finland-Sweden” or “Finland with Sami” keyboard layouts in Windows 10. I suggest checking that you have correct regional and language options selected in your operating system.

Weird that people can use other special charcters in their names but not the Sámi ones.

I use Northern Sámi ( Norwegian ) setting on Windows, but to make these special characters you need to write the normal letter whilst holding down Alt Gr key, which in my game deletes everything that was written beforehand, soo… it’s TECHNICALLY not impossible, but not exactly usable either. :stuck_out_tongue:

Accurate assessment. WoW still uses a naming scheme and database from the dark ages, which is why there can’t be duplicate names on a server and there are arcane restrictions for which and how many characters you can use.

Aah, my dreams of having a goblin shaman named Noaiddáš (Little Shaman) is crushed

I am quite certain you can write that name since my langauge uses õ and thats only langauge in Europe using it as unique letter. Also we have letter š in alphabet.

But then again, for me õ come form keyboard not special code. But alt+gr - same for me for š does not delete anything for me ?

To be fair though, using special characters in names makes things a pain in the behind for people who don’t have those on their keyboard and don’t know how to otherwise type them (not everyone is familiar with character map or ASCII), so it’s sort of understandable that Blizzard hasn’t gone the extra mile to make such possible. If I were to try to write the name of our friendly orcish DK here for example, that would easily take me 5-10 minutes to figure out.

Weird interaction with AltGr. I tested it myself with Norwegian (Sami) keyboard layout and discovered the same problem. It does not seem to happen in other software I tried. Or if I use the mentioned Extended Sami or Finnish with Sami layouts.

I would report it to both Blizzard and Microsoft with exact steps on how to reproduce it. Meanwhile you can try using some other keyboard layout which hopefully are “close enough”.

Remember that you can switch between keyboard layouts fairly easily in Windows, either by keyboard shortcuts or by using the language button on the task bar so you can have multiple keyboard layouts depending on what language you are writing.

Another wisdom from mr Beerwolf

… there you go with your fancy special alphabets and the best I can do is the 3 extra letters æ, ø and å :frowning:

No potato hacking this time I hope.

At least Sámi is a European language :joy:

And I guess I can try using the Finnish Sámi keyboard layout, not sure how different that one is though. I can use Norwegian Æ Ø Å in names, I call it unfair hahha

We’re not in Sweden where we prioritise Sámi and other minority languages. It’s Americans that decide and I doubt they even heard of you… Sorry but that’s just the way it goes.

Technically it’s also an Asian language :+1:t2:

Sadly that’s true  I just found it interesting how some special letters are allowed but not others and it would be fun to have the name I wanted for my character

Maybe it’s time to let Blizzard know the Sámi excist and ask for your alphabet in game? Its’ true it’s hard for non speakers to type, it’s cringy and hilarious to see my å ä and ö:s in the weirdest context. But all other sorts of in my eyes strange letters are allowed so why not.

All “special letters” should be banned from names, at least on English servers.

but we do not do it (most cases) to annoy other players. I.e. my original hunters name sun gods name in French. Because I lived in France and had just come from museum and all this old Egypt stuff was fresh in my memory.

Or my druids name is old druid priestess name. Again not my fault that Gaelic names are strange.

And Europe is fun place with many languages, dialects and all of that.

I personally don’t have much of an issue with special letters in name since I usually just copy-paste them with Prat addon or something if I cannot write them (and even that happening is rare, when you can click peoples char name in chat or in game and invite) But I see how some might find that annoying so I understand both sides. But at least then it should be either all special letters or none so it would be more fair? Just my thoughts
