San'layn & Blood Death Knight lore question

So did the San’layn have actual Death Knights or Blood Death Knights in their ranks? Or are these just scourge knights that specifically use blood magic? And if the San’layn did have Death Knights, would it be like considering it a “promotion” of sorts? And what if a San’layn started using a blood-themed DK Runeblade? Thank you.

This is relating to the San’layn during WotLK.

Death Knights and San’layn are separate things.

San’layn were their own thing with ‘classes’ as sorts; it seems that each class could correlate to what they knew if life (maybe) and brought over into undeath. For instance, there are San’layn mages who know mage spells and blood spells, even combining them.

I think I agree. There is a lot of in-game evidence to back this up. However, it is worth keeping in mind that an exception may exist:

This mob is part of the San’layn and uses (two) Death Knight abilities, but whether that is enough to label him as a Death Knight is debatable.

Starting to think that the Bloodbearer’s along with the Darkblades and Blood Knight NPCs are all just warrior/knights that use blood magic to enhance their melee capabilities, likely using a lot of Blood DK abilities

These abilities are Icy Touch and Death Coil though  but I guess Blood DK’s can use them.

I would assume they could use San’layn forms of Blood Boil and Heart Strike, with them both being Scourge

Pretty much. Death Knights were risen at specific times, as were San’layn. But not sharing a common time they were risen. San’layn were risen when the elves went to Northrend at that one point and were all hunted and killed by Arthas. DKs (gen 3) later on. It’s just that San’layn have a variety of skills.
