Season of Discovery - give me your wildest class/rune ideas

So with season of discovery coming and experimenting with potential new archetypes for existing classes, and since I have nothing better to do (okay, that’s a lie) I’m curious to hear other people’s brilliant, fun, crazy or stupid, pie in the sky ideas for this system. It’s not necessarily “I want blizz to add this”, but just a let’s have fun, what if… for this system.

Let me start - Fire Battlemage

Now this is a character archetype that is near and dear to my heart, one that I like to try and recreate in pretty much every RPG I play. What do I mean by battlemage? A wizard or a mage who dives into enemy lines, causing havoc with blade and spell, either avoiding or reflecting enemy blows. This is a class archetype that NPCs have had pretty much since vanilla, or before with units like spellbreakers in Warcraft 3 (whom mages have spellsteal from), yet hasn’t really ever been available to players.

Runes -

One-handed specialisation
Given this is mage we’re talking about and have literally 0 talents or abilities for melee, and cloth gear is all we need to bridge the gap and it probably has to be quite heavy handed, while keeping in mind the base damage gap of caster and melee main-hands. So here’s what this could be -
You gain 100% of your spell hit as melee hit
You gain 100% of you spell crit as melee crit
// less is possible, if we want people to use at least some amount of melee hit/crit from enchants and weapon, but as a cloth wearer you have limited number of ways to get these
You gain melee attack power equal to 100% of your intellect
// just a tiny bit of extra damage to your autos
Arcane Explosion now has 10 second cooldown
// it occured to me that if you’re not chain casting spells, you would probably be able to spam Arcane Explosion (though you would probably run oom) and we do not want that

Searing Strike
Requires melee weapon
15 second cooldown
You strike your target with your weapon, dealing weapon damage + 50% spell damage as fire. Your next 5 attacks deal extra 120 fire damage at lvl 60. The extra damage can crit.
//the goal here is to both give you a mage flavoured melee attack, as well as give your melee attacks some oompf. limit to number of attacks should make it largely weapon speed agnostic, since you will make 5 attacks in 15 seconds no matter what speed you use. Could potentially trigger Ignite and Arcane Concentration?

Dragon’s Breath
30 second cooldown
Deals (roughly full flamestrike damage) damage in a cone in front of you, roughly 60% done instantly and 40% over next 8 seconds. All targets hit are disoriented for 5 seconds, dragon’s breath DoT won’t wake them up.
//good old dragon’s breath. This is something other mages might want as well given it’s extra source of CC

How would it play -
The playstyle should be simple, get in, use Searing Strike as your primary damage, while using Dragon’s Breath as extra damage/CC based on what you’re doing. Pepper in other Mage instants, like Fire Blast, Arcane Explosion and Cone of Cold as mana permits. If needed and you talent into it, you can be your raid’s Improved Scorch upkeep. It also might be feasible to go Presence of Mind + Pyroblast with this, since Combustion won’t do much for it.

Is this a terrible idea? Maybe. Tell me exactly why it’s a terrible idea if you want.
I’m curious to read terrible ideas of others /laugh

A headshot rune that replaces your racial abilities with another race. So it would be like a Worzel Gummidge head slot, having a different head for different things. :joy:

This would allow people to play races that they like aesthetically and balance the horde/alliance differences.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this actually became a thing in one of the later leveling phases. It would be in line with some of the other revealed runes.

That would be fun. Bonus points if you had to actually defeat a player of that race, or as a reward from one of their new open world battlegrounds /laugh

The Rune of Reality

Makes a GM actually look carefully at a player to see if they are a bot.

It would have been interesting if they tried to do something with the melee classes that hold ranged weapons.

if anyone has ever played GW2 warriors can have ranged builds. While it doesn’t have to go that far with being a full on build perhaps runes/items like a bow that pulls the target towards the tank (grapling hook etc).

Hunters seem to be getting more melee options so can’t see why not.

Warriors pulling blinked mages towards them would look funny and be sweet revenge for 20 years of being frozen and 2 shot…lol.

Yeah, Battlemage is a great idea!

I probably don’t have any crazy ideas, or well, some might be. But I would like to see some old vanilla WoW alpha/beta/launch spells/abilities to return as runes. They don’t have to work exactly how they worked in alpha/beta/launch, but atleast something similar. For instance; Explosive Shot was an alpha-ability for hunters that’s making a return (but most likely based on new versions of the game I believe).

Here are some examples of some removed spells and abilities that could work as runes (in my opinion atleast) :

Mage: An alternative version of Blink. This blink allowed the mage to click where they wanted to teleport, similar how hunters’ shoot their flares

Priest: An alternative Inner Fire. This Inner Fire actually gave both Armor and Attack Power to the priest. The duration was 3 min, but had no charges iirc. Maybe add a melee-ability or two holy monk-style archetype (kick and punch)?

Hunter: Lacerate, but make it useful this time! Make is scale with AP (basically turn it into a DoT-version of Bloodthirst so it scales well with both 2-hander and dual wield.)

Shaman: Shamans are basically a goldmine when it comes to removed spells/abilities with potential. Not gonna mention them all right here, but here are some:
Invsibility Totem: “Summons an Invisibility Totem at the feet of the caster for 1 min that turns nearby group members invisible.” Maybe it can work like an AoE shadowmeld? Aka, you have to be out of combat, and must be standing still.
Ghost Wolf Rank 2: “Turns the friendly target into a Ghost Wolf, increasing speed.” Maybe it could turn the target into a ghost wolf for a short duration, and have some cooldown or something.

Paladin: Probably one of most infamous removed ability; Holy Strike. “Consecrates your weapon, inflicting 201 to 226 additional damage on your next attack. All damage caused is considered holy damage.” As it deals Holy Damage, it will ignore physical Armor, and could be a potential single-target threat bomb for Prot-pallies if it’s on something else than a Gloves-rune. Or maybe work as an alternative to Crusader Strike for Rets?

Good thread! :grinning:

I think it could be fun if they expanded on the pistol shot/between the eyes rogue, but sadly they seem to be just ranged slow and ranged kidney shot rn :pensive:

Get over here!

I would just really, really like to see a holy ranged damage dealer.

Give me a rune that reduces the cast time on Holy Fire, ups the damage on it and smite. Or to change Penance so it doesn’t have the heal component anymore but it hits much harder. Same for Holy Nova.

I don’t want to be stuck casting shadow spells as a priest to do some damage. Or be doing really lack-luster dps with smite. Give me pure damage Holy spellcaster please. Would be awesome.

I’d like a Rouge bow build, a bit like Robin Hood style. You’d switch your primary and secondary weapons around. Maybe applying poisons and traps would be their gameplay and generally debugging the enemy a bit like Affliction Warlocks? Flame arrows for AoE/cleave damage? Maybe applying fire to your ammo instead of poison helps achieve this?

Agreed, that could be really neat! And another of those things that NPCs can do but players not x.x

Ranged builds for warriors and rogues, as already mentioned here.

The battlemage idea is great and I agree.

New forms for druids like the snake form from the druids of the fang.

A vanilla version of DK if well implemented. Could even be unlocked by finding specific things as a warrior or paladin.

Or perhaps something that we’ve never had: a necromancer or even dark ranger spec/class.

More glaive weapons like the ones NE sentinels use.

Basically, more class fantasy but within the spirit of vanilla.

A true scorpion vs sub-zero show down, warrior vs mage.

Nice ideas!

While i’m happy with everything we get, I guess I can add my own “would be fun” list :
Runes for professions could be super fun too! Alchemist, Tinker, …
Race related runes on fingers or cloak! Tauren chieftain, Shadow hunter, silver hand, Lich, Dark ranger … It could be just your spell having a different animation, could make up for some epic questlines and connect you even further with your character!

Ohhh, this didn’t even occur to me. I wonder what could be done with that

I’m all for cool cosmetic stuff, especially if it come with a flavourful questline. That would be super cool!

Necromancer class . I still dont understand why necromancers are not in the Game. they are a core part of the world and there are necromancers in half the factions we end up fighting, yet none for the player to play.

And dont tell me “necromancers are evil, doesnt fit the lore of the good factions” Warlocks are semi-evil. Dks didint have any qualms about trying to raise TIRION FORDRING from the dead . We spread death and destruction wherever we land, murdering entire civilizations for quest items .
So, since no dk in season of discovery, give me a Necromancer. you can copy paste from diablo even. Curses no cause warlocks have em, but you can make a tri talent spec Summoner , Bone and Blood .

Both should absolutely bei evil, for they shall be locked classes for the third faction: The Scourge.

How about not making class that replaces all classes, brining terrible disbalance to the game? If mages can be anything with addition of runes you suggested, why even create another class? This isn’t modded Skyrim where your experience doesn’t affect others.

It’s not really a suggestion for anything, it’s just throwing fun ideas at a wall for fun.

That said, in the hypothetical scenario that those things did exist…the reason to play another class is because you want to? Also cloth wearing melee has some serious potential issues these ideas don’t address, so they would likely be a curiosity and you drop them for yet another fury warrior for your raid lol

Here’s the deal - how about you stretch your creative muscles a bit and give me your wild idea instead? Have a little fun!
