Season of Discovery vs Classic Era

Hello everyone.

This might seem like a lot to ask i would like to ask, if possible, what differences are there between Classic Era and Season of Discovery? I never played SoD but by the minute i grow more and more curious, i was trying to long into private servers but since recent attacks to one of those and the level on insecurity and uncertainty that gravitates around those the hassle doesn’t seem worth it.

For example i know that in Era/Vanilla the Alliance has access to an exclusive mount, the Horde has to wait until WotLK to receive the same love, has that changed in SoD or it’s still the same? What other changes SoD has implemented into the game?

By the way, do you guys think that SoD will see the Ahn’Qiraj event/opening the gates happening again?

Thank you in advance.

Main changes:

  1. A lot of retail / TBC / Wrath spells and talents and glyphs have been added, adding spice to old poorly done rotations of Classic. Now almost every spec is viable
  2. A lot of previously inaccessible things have become more accessible as there are now alternative ways to obtain them (certain reputations, certain rare recipes etc.)
  3. A new max lvl dungeon, 3 dungeons reworked as level-up raids (BFD, Gnomer and ST). Molten Core has received 2 new difficulties. Higher difficulties give cosmetic rewards and require more fire resistance gear. Azuregos and Kazzak have been instanced so that regular people can now access them
  4. Endgame dungeon bosses now drop special coins once per day that you can use to buy various valuable stuff, from old Vanilla materials and items to new unique ones
  5. Multiple quality of life changes.
  6. 3 New PvP events, one of which offers unique rewards
  7. Most realms now are effectively megaservers with multiple layers and higher-than-normal player density
  8. PvP servers now have forced faction balanced, meaning if one side becomes too numerous then it get temporarily prohibited to create characters on this realm for this faction

I will edit the list to add other important things that come to my mind

Now to answer your questions:

Apparently yes. There is still not analogue to Winterspring Frostsaber on the Horde side. However, 2 previously unused Vanilla mounts have been added as rewards for the STV PvP event, which you can buy and use as any race:

Also the last boss of Gnomeregan drops the infamous Fluorescent green mechanostrider:

It will most likely happen and my theory is that they will hopefully make the mount more accessible, judging by their policy of making absurdly hard things easier

Hello Ülma, thank you so much for your reply.

You mentioned bosses like Azuregos and Kazzak, those are world bosses right? So now they are instanced? But are world bosses still in the game?

And about the current servers, i have no idea in what server i should play, i have no clue about the current SoD population, i only saw that Chaos Bolt and Lava Lash are locked.

World bosses are technicalyl non-existent now becaue the only two have been instanced. When Azuregos and Kazzak were in the world, only 1 raid on the entire server could fight them every few days, which meant most people would never experience the fight or get the loot. That is why the devs decided to move them to special instances. The entrance to the instance now is where the boss would normally be in the world. The instance itself is also a replica of where the bosses would normally be in the world.

Chaos Bolt and Lava Lash have been intentionally locked because they are planned to be merged with other servers.

Before you choose the server, I warn you that player population density is off-charts and you see players everywhere you go in abnormal quantities. This means that for many people PvP servers have become nearly unplayable. The hottest thread on the forum is people asking for free transfers from PvP realms. Unless you are really, and I mean REALLY into world PvP, I strongly recommend choosing a PvE server. The only option in such case is Wild Growth.

If you still want to roll on a PvP server, I discourage you from picking Crusader Strike. It is the only one that got out of hand. The population there is imbalanced and people are struggling to find groups, especially on the Ally side. You can chose either Lone Wolf or Living Flame. Both are very populated, but Lone Wolf is a bit more balanced and Living Flame is a bit more populated.

When you create a character you will notice an XP buff. It was not active initially and was introduced later as a catch-up mechanic. You can turn it off at any inn if you wish.

Yea ulma has great points and i think everything is spot on.

The game is great dunno how ppl play era to be honest is the same game but eveyrthing is more balanced and more fun with a lot new abilities etc.
You should 100% try it.

I was checking the server population on the website Ironforge. pro, is that platform reliable at all?

About the classes in the game, are all classes and specializations reliable or are there broken ones? Especially when talking about world and Battleground PvP?

every class is good and have its strenghts and weaknesses.
Now the fotm is Hunter cause every1 playing AV .
Hunter atm has a lot of traps that do aoe dmg and freeze every1 in place so for example alliance hunters just go to the bridge (near their first GY) and spam traps so horde cant pass and win :stuck_out_tongue:
Tbh all classes are good even warrior (if he has some buffs or wbuffs they rek ppl)
Overtuned maybe rogue a bit as always.
Also many classes have more roles : warlock rogues shamans can tank and Mages can heal

Hello Nevolent how are you?

I was thinking about Era and also was looking at private servers, maybe i’m an idiot, but i simply can’t trust those private projects.

I was looking at SoD which is now in Phase 4, when did it start by the way?
I was looking into SoD, i mean i have much to learn and to get into but it does seem fun for sure.

I recommend you to try SOD, at least try it.
With the XP buff and fast leveling it’s not such a big time invesment as classic era.
You can basicly get to lvl 60 after around 80-100 hours played.

The class are very fun, even the meme speces are viabal now.

If you planing on which class to start just ask the forum and people will tell you if its somethign needed in raids or not.
For instance all speces of druids are welcome in raids.

If playing i would recomend you playing on Wild growth PVE allince side, lots of peopel and alot of good people.

Hello Hommie.

Thanks for the reply, i want to play and level up without the XP buff

I think now we are getting on the fourth week.
(first week of launch you couldnt raid, and i have done mc twice so yea 3 weeks have passed and 2morow starts the 4th)

If i had to choose between Sod or Classic i would always take SoD because if i had to eat 20 year old steak from microwave (classic) ill gladly add some barbecue sauce (sod).

You can play both and see what you like more. Era will still be available in its current stage for years to come. SoD will move on to future phase and it’s likely that Blizzard will leave few permanent servers at the last phase (Naxxramas) because they said they can’t fit SoD characters anywhere else due to the added stuff in the game.
