What’s exactly the preservationists labour in World of Warcraft?
In the real world preservationists are people who’s job is to preserve things like historical artifacts or architecture for future generations to study and enjoy.
In WoW they are just quest NPCs related to the Secrets of Azeroth event that recently ended.

After numerous End of the World™ scenarios I’m amazed anything left of or on Azeroth to preserve…

Why wasn’t this Explorers’ League with Brann Bronzebeard and Harrison Jones?

I dont know, i didn’t make them up, i just answered OP’s question.
Quick question - can I safely delete the secrets of Azeroth clues as I have completed it awhile ago - got 15 notes hanging around in the bank 
I deleted mine after i finished the event. I dont assume i will need them again, since i got all the achievments and rewards tied to them. Worst case, i assume you can get them again the next time the event comes arround.
