Hi, i wanna ask something because i’m a very curious person. Why does blizzard restart the servers every Wednesday?
Is it the same reason as a pc to take out bugs and clear ram? So a fresh boot restart?
Or do they add new Harddrive ssd’s etc? Really server blade maintenance?
I am really curious about this topic i’m a IT guy myself build computers and everything myself and work on computers on a daily basis.
But servers are a differend kind of beasty.
What do servers even do for this game?
You have the log in servers i know.
Than you have the game server how does that go to work? The servers doesn’t need to render the game or does it?
Its just for traffic like we move we send it to the server and the server move or char and send back the data?
Or am i wrong?
Would be nice if a real IT guys could help me out !
Well, restarts of servers usually are related to updates. Even if updates do not require a restart directly, it is periodically still a good practise to do so.
In case an update causes issues during a restart, you can relatively easy verify which update it causes. If you wait too long with a restart so multiple rolling-updates have been pushed through, it may be difficult to figure out which one causes the issues and backups may have been overwritten with a faulty patch.
Besides, there may be more advantages, f.e. less load on live-databases so perhaps those are easier to backup at those times. But this is pure speculation.
In the long run rebooting servers makes an environment more stable, either to finalize updates, clean the memory, caches and installation items, fixing driver issues and what not.
