I play on Mograine which is 4,5k pop server, every player has 3-4 alts on average, so that brings us to around 1k players, the open world is dead, nothing is happening apart the 4 raids somebody puts together. With this I want to ask if Blizzard is planning on merging some smaller servers together so people can start playing the game like they used to on release.

No, they aren’t going to merge realms, that’s what the current free transfers are about.

I, for example, have one 60 alt who is parked in area 52 crafting spellcloth. It’s never been to a raid. So for ironforge.pro I am a single player. For everyone of me here has to be 3-4 people with 4-5 alts each for your assumption to hold true. Which clearly there isn’t.
Yes there are players who raid on more than two characters even, but in my experience they are rather rare. There are also rare people like me with no alts at all. Most players seem to have one active PvE or PvP alt apart from their “main”.
My opinion is that ironforge.pro numbers are roughly double the amount of active players. E.g. a 4500 pop server like yours is actually populated by about 2000-2500 unique players.
