Other mmos were passing through massive servers merges. It was always very positive for game itself and always recieved positive feedback from players. So Blizz should put their pride aside, admit number of players are no longer at wotlk levels and do real server merges.
Problem with names can be solved easily. Either let chars to have old server name acting as surname or just set some rules who would win right to have particular name and give all others free rename. Latter much better imo.
Not everyone wants to change their name though. I know it doesnt matter to alot of players, but for some of us it does. Like this char has been my main since 2007. In wow i’ve been Sinaaki since 2007. If i suddenly were forced to change my name it would just feel wrong and somewhat ruin my character.
For me it probably wouldnt happen though since there’s only one other person who has named their char sinaaki from what i can find (and some low lvl alts i have on other servers), but for ppl with more common names it would be a problem.
I don’t care tbh, I just want to have an experience in the game I’m paying for rather than logging in hoping I can do a raid
It does take a lot of background work to transfer a character, so I understand the cost, but I do wish they offered bundle deals if you want to transfer multiple characters.
Yeah, like i wrote, alot dont care, some of us do. I want them to fix servers AND be able to keep my name. But i dont raid mythic, so server isnt really that important to me.
Yeah but if it came to choice
A} Keep your name and not move server
B} Lose your name and transfer to a High pop server for free
you defo know what option everyone would choose
No it doesn’t… where the hell did you get that idea from?
It’s mostly an automated process.
The initial tool and integration could have taken a bit of work, but no its not resource or time intensive process. We’re talking about a big company, not some small office trying to manage their own DB.
The scale alone of this game doesn’t justify the price. It’s a deterrent (as in: not having everyone transfer willy nilly) which I’d be fine with if they managed their servers properly… but they don’t.
It’s automated, yes, but that doesn’t mean it’s not database intensive. Why do you think it can take like 30 minutes just to complete a transfer? It’s not just like flipping a switch.
Another reason the price is high because they also don’t want people server hopping constantly.
Ofcourse they put a 30 min wiggle room in. It takes only a few minutes in reality. On busy days I can see it take a bit longer. But that does not mean it is very DB intensive.
That second point you made was in my post.
And no I’m not just talking out of my behind. Have done DB design professionally.
This is Blizzard, I’m sure they have more resources and quality staff available. Though they also have one of the biggest douche in the Industry as a CEO. So I’m sure there is where most of the problems are located. :>
I am hoping to see someone ask the question about server populations at Blizzcon. Though it’s not like they aren’t aware of the issues.
Don’t think these were low population servers, they became dead due to player decline and classic.
Yes, if anyone knows anyone going…
We get to submit questions too. Unless I’m remembering wrong.
Do I have to have a virtual ticket to do that?
Usually a blue will post a topic on both the US and EU forums where we can submit questions (no ticket required)
Personally I think they should merge all servers into a single mega server and implement layering similar to Classic.
For naming issues, allow surnames and I think you’ll be close to a win for all.
Surnames would be a must. I’m not sure how it would really work with WoW though. When a server is at capacity they queue the other’s trying to get on. If you are going to put everyone in one big queue would that exacerbate things or improve it? Do those systems just endlessly create new shards? How does it affect guilds, and languages etc?
Or, if server connection/merging isn’t possible, I wonder if the cross realm communities could be expanded to allow cross realm guilds, with guild perks and achievements, trading allowed between guildies and a guild bank? Mythic raiding could also be opened to cross realm right away - since that’s something that gets turned on later, that at least would be simple enough to do. Obviously allowing trading between guildies on different servers could affect server economies, but perhaps the AH revamps are a first step to having a single, unified AH for all realms?
Welcome to Activision Blizzard.
Why merge Servers if you just have to wait long enough and people will pay you $$$ to transfere.
Sure, a few might quit, but these are not the whales Activision wants to keep anyway.
