about two months ago I came back to the game and started gearing a shadow priest through mythic+. I quickly got quite decent gear due to the uncapped valor change.
Right now, I have 275 ilvl and besides weekly keys for vault I don’t really know what else to do.
I then started gearing a survival hunter since that’s a class and spec I’ve never played before. I was shocked at how much better and smoother it feels to play in m+.
I know it’s a meta class right now but even with 25 less ilvl it’s already heavily outperforming my shadow priest and it feels much better to play.
I think the gap between meta specs and non meta specs is quite ridiculous in m+ right now, or is shadow priest just bad in m+ in general? I feel like the dps cooldowns line up very badly and the aoe rotation in particular is quite clunky and doesn’t feel very competitive. single target damage is maybe the only strength. Any thoughts?
The deal with shadow atm is that we’re extremely awful at aoe, but when it comes to single target we’re up towards the top. If this is not enough of an answer for you, I’d recommend looking at pretty much every active shadow posts here
That one my friend. Still waiting tk be a meta for atleast one season since legion s1.

With survival hunter for example you can delete packs every 40 seconds and the single target is still very competitive. I know there will always be meta classes, I just think the gap right now might be too big. my survival hunter has 255 ilvl now and is outperforming my shadow priest with 275 ilvl and it also just feels much smoother
Well sv is way better, but lets be honest…if youre getting outperformed by 20 ilvl lower alt…then i feel like you have also some big gabs in performance on sp.
On the smoothness note i can totaly agree…searing nightmare is an awfull ability.

Obviously I won’t play perfectly with either spec but I do think I’m able to generally understand how to get into a class. sp feels very good on bosses, but that is more than made up for on sv by that enormous and very frequent aoe burst, even with 20 ilvl lower
You can try correctly setting your talents and build your gear correctly. You are focused on single target at the expense of multi target. This is likely the main reason you have poor AoE.
Single target focus will work well on many bosses. So you will get good results but find that you lag behind other classes elsewhere.
