(Clickbate Title)
Alright so I’m a fairly casual WoW player. My aim is to improve my shadow priest playthrough due to my damage falling short. Currently I’m not able to do most Daily quest or WQ hence my damage is very weak, beyond what should be normal after checking the statistics for Shadow. I’ve read icy veins guides on how to setup and use rotations and im still not doing anything above 13k dps (ilvl 421), and that pretty much leaves me confused. Since this is my first priest character i really would appretiate some help and clarity on how my rotation should be to maximise my damage output, both in AOE situations and single target. Since the one provided på Icy Veins is not doing much for me. Thanks for reading this, any tips on this will be appreciated.
Going off your current profile for the armory it would help being traited for shadow and not using tank trinkets(?) simming your character will help or looking at other top end players trait/talents set ups would help too.
Shadow is extremely trait dependent spec, perhaps the most trait dependent spec in the entire game. You have no Shadow traits chosen at all. All of them are for Holy priest. Meaning your traits to do absolutely nothing for you.
Your trinkets are pretty bad as well, especially Bloodthirsty Urchin. It does nothing for you. It’s a tank trinket, so it doesn’t even have intellect on it and its passive effect won’t help you at all either.
For talents, I’d suggest running San’layn instead of Intangibility if you are having issues surviving in open world, the boosted healing from Vampiric Embrace and shorter cooldown really help. Switch to Twist of Fate, Lingering Insanity and Legacy of the Void as well. They will help you get into Void Form easier after you drop out, which in turn will increase your damage. Misery and Dark Ascension can work but they are meant more for when you pull massive amount of mobs and you don’t want to be doing that if you are already having issues living.
Your essences are pretty suboptimal as well. You are running Visions of Perfection major and it’s one of the worst ones you could run. Crucible of Flames will outperform it easily, especially since you can also use Crucible on yourself to heal you if needed.
All of this information is included in the Icy Veins guide as well, so I’m not sure if you really did read it.
That being said, all my information is based on your armory profile here on the forums (since you didn’t really give us anything else to work with) and that can sometimes be a bit of a snail on updating.
It’s top tier together with fire mage
You don’t have rights to call Shadow Priest worst if you don’t have any idea how to play it. Call Porsche worst car ever because of manual transmission and you don’t know how to handle it.

i have 417 ilvl and i’m close to 25k dps in longer fights, l2p issue.
I strongly advise you to use Azerite Benthic gear for now because there are many Must Have traits, just upgrade them.
Its the weekend
You have too much mastery, you need more haste and crit.
Haste makes your DoTs tick faster, crit makes Shadowy Apparitions proc more often, this means that crit and haste have synergy because Vampiric Touch will not only tick faster but it will also crit more, generating many more apparitions.
You need these azerite traits: Chorus of Insanity x3, Spiteful Apparitions x2, Whispers of the damned x1
You want Whispers of the damned x1 because more mind blast crits = more insanity = longer Void Forms = more damage!
Shadowy Apparitions are caused by crits from Shadow Word: Pain… but rest of your post is totally correct.
Ohhh my bad
Haste > Everything Else
Then Crit (probably - looks like). Then whatever…
DoT classes in every game I played were all about haste, alacrity, speed, tempo or whatever stat speeding up dots were called.
Sim your character. That is the most important rule. Also get another trinket. The tank one is useless since you need intellect. Also 13 % haste is kinda weak as a shadow priest. Try to aim for haste in all your gear unless your sim says to focus on another stat. Other than that, aim for chorus of insanity in all your azerite armor if you can. That is your besi trait and you should aim to stack it in all your azerite. Depending on your sims, shadow crash might be better than auspicious spirits in single target despite it being an aoe talent so compare the builds and check which one is better. I hope that those were helpful anyway Good luck with your character ^^ … Shadow Priest might not be the best in damage but it surely is a really fun spec ao it makes up for that if you are not a min maxer.
