Shadowlands Death Knights

Here we are again brothers.

I have been keeping up with the changes they are making to Death Knights, and so far i cannot remain hopeful for the launch (while i know its still early). I will try to list my observations as plainly as possible.

On a general note, Death Knights still dont bring something unique to a party or raid, which is sad, but will have to see if this will truly come to pass.

BLOOD
While i can agree that the changes to Blood look very good so far, i do have a few points to make regarding the spec, as it is the spec i play when not playing Frost, and who doesnt like Blood?

Rune Strike - They are completely removing this talent, which in my humble opinion is a waste. I understand that its the least played talent on that row, but the ability is awesome in itself, and deserving to be made baseline to all specs, exactly as it is but on a shorter recharge, adding flexibility to the rotation when you are out of options or when you are trying to pool resources for something. Much potential, wasted.

Rune Tap - While this talent deserves to be baseline to Blood, it doesnt deserve a nerf with the CD it has. Still early though.

FROST
What can i say for this. While the changes are mostly welcome so far, the spec’s downtime has not been adressed even once, which is quite disheartening. But there are a few other points i want to make.

Avalanche - Well, as things stand, this talent is getting buffed. Why? Noone ever plays this talent, and noone will ever play it as long as it is in the same row as Frostscythe/Frozen Pulse. This talent could be something more meaningful altogether as i have said on another of my posts. Buffing it is just plain dumb.

Glacial Advance - Can someone please explain to me why this talent has to outline that it applies razorice to any target it hits? For the life of me, i can not understand this. I can simply run Frostscythe, put rune of razorice on my mainhand, and apply razorice to every target i hit with frostscythe (an ability i can spam and can benefit from KM) WHILE dealing increasing damage with RW, talented with Gathering Storm. I can understand it in SL if you are not running razorice rune because of more/better options, but this talent could be way better and more rewarding. Maybe not even being a talent and replaced with something cooler?

Hypothermic Presence - Aside on this being a talent and on the same row as Gathering Storm and not baseline (meh), this talent reduces the runic power costs by 35%, which in all cases means that we will get less procs of runic empowerment, and therefore, more downtime, all at the cost of hitting more Frost Strikes. But the more important case is the BoS talent, which is something you are forced to take if you choose this talent, because it effectively adds duration to your burst window. Lame lame lame. Another BoS-oriented Frost DK so far by the looks of it, especially when paired with the brand new rune of Hysteria, which grants more runic power from spenders. Hooray for us.

UNHOLY
I dont have something to say for UH, as it looks so cool with it’s new changes and will probably be the most played spec in SL with it’s new Mastery and cool Talents, plus the baseline AMZ. I have found that Runic Corruption doesnt proc nearly enough tho. Could be just me.

Thanks for taking the time to read this brothers and sisters.
Suffer well.

blood gets blood tap by default which serves the same purpose as runestrike but not requires melee range and probably is of the GCD (hopes)

what changes, i don’t see any, ever.

I feel you, brother.

I definitely agree, they should make rune strike baseline for all

My only sadface gripe is that they didn’t give us back a permanent abomination like we had in Legion. I loved that.

Aside from specs and talents, they dont seem to adress the class downtime and the fact that we bring nothing to a party or raid, while every other class has something to offer. Would be nice if we got back Unholy Aura or Horn of Winter as baseline but i fear this may never come to pass

I really want to main a frost DK, i always do, but when BoS becomes the only build viable i roll back to my fury warrior

I really hate BOS, and i want more builds to be viable, like right now in 8.3, Icecap is finally viable even tho it has to do with corruption stacking “Severe” for crit is a must, and haste

but most of BFA, BoS was the only build, and i hate that

looking at the updates, seems to me BoS will once again remain the only build

This is something that kind of worries me a lot. Dk do have a combat rez but this is a shared ability with druids and warlock that do bring a lot of other tools to a party/raid.
Is the grip so good that the class doesn’t require more tools?

ok I now realize that I was really unfair with the DK situation. They do have some very nice utility.

Grip, combat rez, antimagic bubble for the raid, asphyxiate are awesome raid tools that are very sufficient.

Plus you get everything to be litteraly unstoppable : anti-fear-charm, anti-movement-speed-impair, anti-stun, anti-magic-dot

I just want a viable alternative to BoS in shadowlands. The rest looks ok to me. As the user above me said, we DO have some raid utility.

Although I have to admit that even though 2h frost is back I’m probably still gonna end up with unholy again cause it’s just so damn cool :stuck_out_tongue:

Good ideas. You are right about the resource replenish of the DK.
I have come to accept the fact that I will have only haste to help charge my runes.
My record is 7 Death Coil casts without trigering Runic Corruption.

In all fairness, blizzard have implemented some community ideas, but therein lies another issue, one size does not fit all and so when they put one thing it, it can ruin it for everyone else if it is too invasive.

Remorseless winter for example, is not very invasive but is also pretty good, rather a successful implementation.

Breath of sindragosa on the other hand, while a talent, is rather impairing the rest of the talent tree so is extremely invasive…

There are some options they could do for this such as a resource dump tier with breath and various other powerful effects that eat up alot of runic power, this is the main problem with it, there is simply no alternative to using runic power faster, thus why it is rediculously powerful, because we overcap so badly.

Am i the only annoyed that blood gets a pet ? I really dislike pet classes, and they keep adding and adding them to frost mage, dk’s now blood dk …

It’s not a pet. It’s a cooldown that lasts 1 minute.
Think of it as a second dancing rune weapon kinda thing

Pet will still be unholy exclusive.
Frost and Blood get a CD

plus it will mostly be used as food for the new death pack

Most useless ability ever brought back lol. Raise dead in its current iteration is pure garbage.

Blood already had tons of pets, it always had its blood worms, originally had raise dead and to top it off, it also has dancing rune weapon, it is, in effect, the pet tank, it was always a close second to unholy in terms of summoning potential.

speaking of which, i wonder if they will grant blood a “share pain” kind of ability to transfer it to pets and just work up from there.

Frost on the other hand had alot less of a pet focus with just the temporary ghoul, however it had th strongest magic attack: howling blast which was originally an actual nuke unlike it is now and also had a decent aoe CC called hungering cold that iceblocked everyone nearby, this then allowed you to crit everything with howling blast but was removed for reasons that i don’t think even blizzard themselves know.

Id like abomination pvp talent baseline. I love this spell it is amazing.
