Shadowlands did not do any damage to the setting

I play the Beta atm and I think Midnight will blew it greatly even without Arthas. Already so much better then both dragonflight and TWW.

I dunno, I think most players aren’t expecting much from it.

Zero content beyond leveling a few keys and a raid. No expansion features.

we get a new race and the final raid might villain bat an important alliance leader(Alleria) for the first time.

Not really a new race. Just more night elves.

Not even something the players wanted.

That would be nice, she’s an awful character. Which is why it won’t happen.

Spoilers ahead:

The dark naaru inside her takes over and make her body corrupt.

The characters from the Warcraft 3 human campaign weren’t evil or at the very least morally flawed?

… okay.

I would absolutely argue that SL did the most damage. In fact I would argue it isn’t even a contest. The more that gets retconned the better.

It really isn’t. The only people complaining are the Arthas fanboys.

Not at all no. The gang around Illidan was forced into a bad deal due to Garithos being an incompetent racist. Their goal to destroy the scourge would have helped all of Azeroth. They are anti heroes not villains.

Yes, and we’ll end up saving her. They’re not going to kill off their cover girl, even if the players want it.

Why is it that only alliance leaders that get them sweet plot armor?

I’ll say that for TBC, the story came out better for it.

I do enjoy the TBC character deaths and the implications and stories that go behind them.

Kael’thas is so good because its such a tragedy.

BFA actually just felt like Danuser speedrunning actual wow to get to his fanfiction named shadowlands and even then, atleast it still felt like Azeroth.

Shadowlands just felt like we were suddenly playing a completely different IP with wow graphics

Not for me. Character removal and pointless deaths always go against Horde races but never against the alliance. The bias is obvious.

Yes it was alien which is why I enjoyed it. It was something different after the same boring formular for years.

And the Burning Legion fanboys, and the people who thought the Shadowlands was-an-overlay-onto-the-physical plane-fanboys, and the Sylvanas fanboys, and the Baine Bloodhoof fanboys, and many more.

And then there’s the faft that the story itself is garbage.

ā€œNOTHING ESCAPES THE MAW!ā€
1 hour later:
ā€œTHE PLAYER CHARACTER HAS ESCAPED THE MAW!ā€

Main villain MIA.
9 month patch drought
SL also features tons of meaningless changes, such as the flowers stuff, removal of emotes, /flirt, all of that is all during Shadowlands.

Nonsensical character developments all over the place.
Garrosh Hellscream’s final send-off is an in-game animation created, by their own words, in 6 hours by an intern.

And of course what it also does is it just digs up every single character it can get its hands on and defiles it in some way. Kel’Thuzad is a good example. The Sanctum of Domination is full of nonsense all over the place.

The only character I would argue it didn’t do dirty was Uther. Otherwise? Total clown fiesta.

Entire Warcraft 3 was filled with Morally flawed Characters and not all were made full blown Villains. There’s a very distinct shift from Kael’thas we last saw following Illidan to Northrend, the Prince that cared for his people and looked for a way for them to survive (at the time of writing W3 High/Blood Elves magic addiction was indeed lethal and not just very major inconvenience) even if he had to make some morally dubious things and the cackling power hungry Legion follower we’ve seen in TBC. One that dies with his master Name on his lips. Hell this characteristic is what made Blood Elves compelling. In the same vein there a distinct shift from Illidan as we knew him before and his full blown one dimensional villainy. Remember Illidan was still a person willing to out everything including his crusade against legion on hold if the one woman he loved was ever endangered. Hell the one mention from Kael that Tyrande was still alive but likely in danger has caused him to drop everything and cooperate with his brother despite trying to kill him moments earlier.

I do however agree that SL did way more damage. The sin of introducing Jailer as not just ā€œthe man behind manā€ but Instead the grand orchestrator of everything that happened in the Warcraft Universe no matter how unlikely was just… No

Illidan wasn’t a 1-dimensional villain in tBC? He was barely present to us - he was hiding out doing his thing in the Black Temple, a place that was already corrupted regardless of his doings, though he didn’t make it better; that’s kind of his character flaw.

Baine deserves nothing nice after he betrayed the Horde for Jaina multiple times.

Shadowlands being the afterlife for the whole universe is a nice twist. It redefined everything we know.

What do you mean? Sylvanas didn’t die and will likley return in Midnight better then ever.

They are gone. Like they were literally defeated.

Blame that on Covid. The dev team had many hurdles when half your workforce is forced to stay at home for 2 years.

Good. He sucks.

Not exactly. He was strongly redesigned into a typical villain. Hell his lair in the temple had a full blown harem in it and we both know this guy had a very single target sexuality.

You can have that opinion and that’s fine, but it isn’t whether he ā€œdeserved something niceā€. He was dragged into the realms of dead and then proceeded to just sit there for no good reason.

It isn’t a twist, it was already like that. The twist is that the rest of the universe as well as Azeroth is missing from that fantasy. It’s also weird that there are said to be infinite afterlives but only 4 of them matter to unlocking the Maw. Very strange indeed.

I mean her writing was epic tier garbage. She’s literally stronger than the Jailer in the gameplay, gets all her powers from him (so how did she get stronger? Unclear), decides randomly she doesn’t like him even though he just says what he’s been saying the whole time, and then she gets wrecked. She is constantly, mysteriously, super strong and there’s no explanation for this for 4 friggin’ years.

What kind of storytelling is that?
Well, whatever it is, it’s not a kind of storytelling I like, that much is for certain.

Yes, but their leaders we all completely retconned by Sire Denathrius. Which is a shame because Sire Denathrius is the only cool character in the entire expansion. He’s like Strahd von Zanovich on roids. In actual Warcraft character and we kill him off immediately.

I don’t care if it was COVID’s fault, it sucked regardless.

Okay, he still got done dirty.

There’s no evidence he used the harem. The harem came about because demons do everything they can make you perform a cardinal sin, and they were glued to that place. Illidan allies himself with practically anything so long as he gets to kill/stop Sargeras. That’s all he wants, everything else be damned.

Ys but only the Dreadlords. The other leaders of the demon army that is no longer relevant for future stories got a way out to still matter even without Sargeras being on the scene.

I Lowkey enjoyed shadowlands more than dragonflight and tww.
But hey, I value m+ extremely high and shadowlands m+ was so much fun.

It had some of the best dungeons we got so far AND also expanded the cosmic lore. And the Titans are now just one pantheon from many who are on a power trip and might be the true villains of the world soul saga.
