Shadowlands Level Squish

Does anyone know exactly how the Shadowlands level squish is going to work? I get that the new max level is going to be 60 and all characters above 50 is going to be shrunk down to level 50, but how does that work considering there is a pretty big difference in power level between, let’s say, a level 55 character and a 120, both of which (if I am not mistaken) are going to go down to 50. Because I seem to remember hearing that the power level you have at 120 will not be changed. Will all the characters below 120 get a boost in power level to match the leveled or previously boosted 120s?

Also I was wondering, as Shadowlands is seemingly going to be very alt-friendly I have started leveling some alts. But is there any point in leveling them further than 50, since they’re going to get squished either way? Keep in mind, these alts are only for Shadowlands and I have no interest in leveling them further.

Answers and explanations for both of these matters would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

lvl 120 characters are going to be lvl 50, NOT all characters above 50.

As far as I understand, level 20 becomes level 10 and between 20 and 120 it becomes : 10 + (lvl - 20) / 2.5

So 20 - 10, 30 - 14, 40 - 18, 60 - 26, 80 - 34, 100 - 42, 120 - 50.

Oh ok, thanks

Level 120 will become 50 everyone below that will be scaled accordingly. We don’t know the exact formula but I assume there will be on of two cases. They either scale everyone lineary or make a curve so level 20 scales to 10 and 120 to 50, everything in between adjusts accordingly.

Here the spreadsheet I made that presents both cases for each one I show both rounding up and rounding down.

There are two ways it can be done and no one know which it will be.

  1. divide your level by 2.4 (120 / 50)
  2. Take your total XP gained so far are put it into a new scale for levels, which is more difficult.

They will be squished relative to where they are. If a 120 becomes 50, a 60 will become 25.

Personally I’m not levelling anything until 9.0 because I love the idea of picking one expansion and sticking with it 1-50. Finally a coherent story without having to freeze XP for 3 weeks per month

I’ve read everything I could find on the subject but couldn’t see any information on old expansion end-game content. Let me explain my concern.

Currently when we are leveling and reach a certain expansions level cap we immediately continue with next expansion. So we never enjoy the end-game contents of old expansions unless we are farming something. So no Argent Tournament, no isle of Quel’danas, no Timeless isle and no Argus… Some of these are great contents that we play the most in expansions original timeline but when we are leveling we just skip these…

I would love if Blizzard found a solution for this. Maybe lowering the level requirement for old expansions end-game content so that we can play those before we reach level 50.

For example:
level 1-10 : Exile’s reach and other starting areas.
level 10-40: Old expansions leveling content
level 40-50: Old expansions end-game content like, (in addition to the ones above) World quests, Isle of Thunder, Old raids with timewalking like scaling etc.
level 50-60: New expansion.

If I go further, I would say Blizzard should never raise new level cap again for expansions after Shadowlands. So as soon as new expansion comes all characters should be squished again (from 60 to 50) and we level to 60 again.

And if i go slightly further again this end game content level requirement can even be lowered during current expansion. After one char hits level cap and reaches end-game content could be available to all others (with exceptions if there are class/race/character specific requirements)

Like now, I would love to level my alts in Mechagon or Nazjatar… But I am doing Korrak’s Revenge instead

I wonder how reputation will react to this change. You cant gain reputation with WoD companions or farm Laughing Skull (Horde) at this moment because level is too high

(Have to lock at 99-100)

I’m not sure about companions, but they have fixed rep gains for the laughing skull. I grinded to reverved at 120 so that my mag’har mage could have some good-looking headwear.

as for the power, i guess it will be scaling of of your gear mostly. i still have chars wearing old “wod” gear, but since they changed the ilvl or scaling of them, they still have more or less the same lvl of power, even if back in the days the stats/ilvl was very different then it is now. like wod i think i had over 100k hp already, now if i log on them i have around 10-18k

Shadowland comes with the LVL squish
it does not have a stat squish

You will feel exactly the same then as you do now!, the only difference is your lvl

at lvl 60 you would be as strong as if you were 130

well think of it like this …
the xp to get to 120 will be transformed in to the xp needed to get to 50,
So, the xp needed to get to 119 will be whats needed to get to the xp for 59.6 (a guess, but a decent one I bet)
the xp required will be scaled (presumably divided by 2.4) to match the reduction in level.
In essence, It wont make a jot of difference as youll still need the same number of quests/farmed xp to get to the next level … so, frankly, I see absolutely no reason to do this level squish whatsoever … maybe its just a change for changes sake sorta thing.
Its begging for abuse and exploits. meh.

didn’t you see that they will increase the lvling rate by 70%? you will be able to do 1-50 in Legion for example that in current lvls would be

lvl 1 - 120 in Legion

It’ll be way faster to get to 50 / 120 when Shadowlands Pre-Patch arrives!
