Shadowlands - Name Purge?

Why we dont get a name purge with the release of every new expansion or two?

A lot of names are taken from long-gone guys who dont play this game anymore.

Im checking “Kaloyan” from time to time and its inactive 14 level character for years, whithout visible Armory. I want this name…

Purge low level character under 20 or even 50 or more… from time to time. Just make them available for others if the account isnt active anymore. If someone take the name, the old nameholder should be forced to change its character name when/if he return to the game.

The thing is, your name could be on an active account though.

THey do that though i have 2 accounts 1 EU 1 KR and i havent used my EU account since i dindt live in the EU since mop (thats the last time my EU account had gametime) And when i came back to EU all my characters had flagged names and 1 of the characters name was literaly just a keyboard smash.

But 100% agree its annoying not being able to get names cuz someone has it saved on a alt or doesnt play anymore

This is often the case, you’ll see a low level or never levelled character who is just a placeholder for a name. Sometimes you even see people try to sell names.

As long as the account is active, then the names remain reserved.

With the new features in Shadowlands, I have a chance to take it
I`ll send a mail to this character and then the owner could see the “Mail” icon next to it when he is trying to log in with his main.

I may have to come out and say I have a few names reserved as well. Mostly because I’m an altoholic and use them up fast.

Indeed, and it is one of the best features to be added. Though, one downside. If the name is on a secondary account without subscription but linked to an active account, then they can’t read the message.

There is nothing wrong with keeping names even if you don’t level them for years

I think within an hour of creating this character, I had 3 people ask to buy the name. Part of me wishes I just banked that 250k :frowning:

It’s not, but excuse me if you have a lvl 1 that you just made one day 3 expacs ago and forgot about, that’s pushing it!

I have to disagree

Its fine to have alts that you play.
But I do think the name rule should be based on characters and not account.

If a character has not been played in 2 whole expansions, the name should be free to use by others.

I think its a bit of a d move to hold a name for years and never use the character

People are free to disagree of course but as the system stands they are not doing anything wrong.

Are there names I can’t get because they are on low characters. Yes. Do I think they should be forced to give them up? No.

Agreed but i can understand why someone is frustrated over someone doing that.

Never said they were doing something wrong.

But Blizz can enforce a shorter expiry date for unused chars… and they wouldn’t be doing anything wrong either.

I agree they could reduce the time involved. The chances of names being freed up under the current system seem pretty slim tbh.

Aaaah - those halcyon days where a GM would free up an inactive name for you. Those were the good times weren’t they. :pensive:

As it stands, the best bet is indeed to write the character and hope the owner takes notice. This should be somewhat more likely with the aforementioned feature in Shadowlands, where even the most neglected of alts will have a mail icon attached on the character selection screen.

Alternatively, and similarly unlikely, names are unlocked after a certain period of time - provided the account has been continously inactive for that long. The odds aren’t fantastic, but it has been known to happen now and then.

I don’t know why did they change that rule anyway. I mean if you’d make ticket for a name to be freed up. GMs would check if the character was inactive for certain (long period of time) and free that name to be usable, only if it met the requirement.

I think with names being freed up automatically it should be every expansion at least, instead of every 2 expansions. And activity or inactivity should be character based, imo. Though people would just regularly log to these characters to reset the inactivity duration anyway but oh well.

Someone probably decided that they didn’t want to pay GMs to check up on player names, and instead focus on different kinds of tickets. So they automated it and called it a day.

Yeah, probably. That makes sense but, are you saying that they would be paid extra just for checking the names? They are paid to read the tickets anyway, if that’s what you meant I just thought it would be weird to pay them extra just to check up the names.

it is time to go a main as undead and then go purge some alliance :stuck_out_tongue:
