Why exactly? Here in Europe we use 24 hour format so we don’t have to deal with this ambiguous nonsense.
When I write 14:36, it’s pretty clear what I mean. In every day talk we don’t use 24 hour format, rather I will say “see you at 2”, which unless mentioned, is 14:00. If we meet at 2 in the morning, as in during the night, I will emphasize it.

No you’re not stupid, if you use the 24 hour clock notation then the affixes ‘AM’ and ‘PM’ are redundant and unnecessary. 12 o’clock mid day is simply 12:00 and 12 o’clock midnight is 00:00.
The stupidity lies with whoever put the ‘AM’ in there.
