Shaman - feedback for a newb

Hello everyone,

After years away from WoW, i recently got back and undusted my toons, decided which one to get to 80 and main, what about potential rerolls etc.
This being said, i already grew bored of my Ret Paladin. I should have known, i found it boring already years ago  But it sounded like a good choice to get “back on the horse”, and actually it was

Now, this being said, i just wanted to get some feedback of the community wrt current state of the Shaman in game ? As i am looking to start fresh with a ranged character, like to play solo or at least not being forced to group, always liked multi-spec-possible toons (ie, NOT mage) and already played Druid extensively in the past…i’m leaning towards Sham quite heavily  I reckon it’s not the BEST solo friendly class out there, and might be struggling in some type of content like delves and such - but seems like an overall well-balanced class

Anything specific to mention AGAINST rolling a Sham nowadays?

Cheers!

I could talk about the positives too but since you only want the negatives let’s go with that:

Shaman in PvP is gonna be the kill target all the time, whether you play Ele or Enh you’re gonna have all braindead Warriors and Paladins chasing you 24/7 and you’ll struggle to stay alive.

In M+ you have bad and few defensives so strong AoEs or DoTs (which the game is plagued with) will hurt you more than any other class.

In delves you are almost forced to play Enh, because being a caster with 3 mobs smacking you in the face isn’t gonna be fun and Brann can’t tank (not sure why they didn’t make him able to…). And again, you’re squishy so you’ll have to rely on Brann’s healing flasks which spread all over the place, gl with that

Resto in both PvP and PvE runs out of mana in a matter of seconds and you barely move healthbars unless you have big cooldowns.

Enhancement rotation is a mess, so many globals needed to start doing any damage, so many flashing buttons which you have a hard time understanding which one to press first, and then a mistake can ruin your DPS entirely.

No tank spec (yet, pls Blizz make it happen asap).

That’s all I can think of right now.

Hmm i think you playing ele wrong if you think we lack def- atmo in M+ / Raids because of the CDR build into the kit the two def we have is more then enough for any m+ / raid (dono about pvp because i haven’t really touched that this tier but that could be how you kite/ position when kiting meele like it has been in prev expansions)

in delve i play ele and its completely fine you just gotta play dps and get bran to tank for you by single targeting and letting him cleave - this was back when i had 20 ilvl lower its probably super easy now and wouldn’t have to do that + if you get to a hard mob earth ele - makes it easy (you can even bait agrow onto your storm ele too)

Resto in M+ is the best current healer right now with its utility and as ive had a 4.7mil healing surge crit id definitely say that the healing isn’t lacking – again haven’t tried pvp so i can’t comment on that and raid healing you do oom i agree with that but that could be down to your stat priority how much crit > vers > mastery > haste if you not stacking the most crit you can possibly get you gonna struggle with mana more (atleast in raid sense) asuming stat prio might be different for m+ and pvp its ofc mastery vers

Shaman is in a good spot over all, not the best class but its the best the class has been in a few expansions now - enh sims the most single target and performs well in raid over all - Ele sims at 13th place but use the kit right and you can make up for the damage (ofc you wont beat other class’s if they perform amazing but you can still crank some damage if timing stuff and the right time)

over all id say our kit is decent at the moment 2 defs - 2 big aoe ccs - shortest kick in game - decent dps off healing (ancestral swiftness) - self rez - atmo i say shaman good choice (not the best class but at a decent level)

I’m not playing wrong, big AoE damage in both m+ and raid comes in timers of 15-30 seconds, for example Rogue has Feint which is a 40% AoE damage reduction on a 30 second cooldown, we have a 40% reduction on a 1.5min cooldown so it’s not even close. Druid has a 30% damage reduction on a 40sec- 1 minute cooldown which lines up much better with mechanics than our 1.5min. Paladin has 40 sec CD damage reduction, etc etc.

Also for PvP especifically you have 0 defensives to press if you’re stunned, unlike Priests, Paladins, Druids, etc. And we also have no immunities.

In delves you’re gonna be 4/5 times without Earth elemental because it’s a 1 minute duration vs 5 minute cooldown situation, and Brann won’t keep aggro off you because assuming you know your stuff you’ll be doing 5 times more damage than him.

About Resto ye you can get some big numbers 1 out of a hundred times when stars align if your mastery is high and someone is really low on HP, but overall the staple healing buttons feel bad to press.

I’m not saying Shaman is bad, I enjoy playing it, and like every class it has strengths and weaknesses, but the OP asked especifically for weaknesses and that’s what I was talking about.
