Hey! I have been contemplating making a copy of Ashval on a roleplaying server, and would like to have some minor advice for her backstory.
Now, I haven’t roleplayed properly since Warlords, but I tend to come up with some basic backstories for my characters even if they are on non-RP servers. Ashval in particular I have imagined as a somewhat morally grey character; she is not a cruel orc, but she enjoys war, and cannot imagine her life without it. I imagine that, while not so keen on Sylvanas’s rule, she was a genuine Garroshian during Cataclysm and early Mists. Whether she stayed loyal to him after he started going crazy, I am not sure - I have contemplated the idea of her going rogue after Garrosh’s death and becoming a pirate, but I am not sure if I get to keep that idea if I ever get to roleplay her properly.
Anyway, so all that made me think: how would Ashval’s militarism and her actions in general sync with her status as a shaman? We do have precedents of shamans losing their powers after committing evil acts, such as exterminating the draenei, or Garrosh’s dark shamans enslaving the elements - but these evil acts were great in magnitude. Would piracy offend the elements, for example? What about serving in Garrosh’s army, but without being involved in dark shamanism personally?
Personally, it does not appear to me that the elements are like the Light, requiring a strong moral compass from their followers. I would imagine that the nastier shamans, if they do not resort to dark shamanism, could simply commune with the more cruel elemental spirits, such as those serving the Old Gods - not that Ashval would do something like that, but it’s a possibility. But what do you think? I’d like to hear the thoughts of experienced roleplayers.
TL;DR: What evil crap can shamans get away with without getting ghosted by the elements?
If you want, you can go down the dark shamanism path and force the elements to work with you. Just have to keep quiet about it in front of other shaman.
Well, as for Dark shamanism, the Dark shamans use the sixth Element, decay, and with it, they force the elements to obey them and use them in battle, which is more an evil act as you can see… You can be one though, but not sure, maybe if found out about, you may become Kill on Sight for it, or at very least, greatly frowned upon
Also, shamans may answer the call of war, you can see Thrall and Drek’thar, “STORMPIKE FILTH IN MY KEEP?” xD
But well, the matter of not being able to imagine life without war wouldn’t necessarily be evil, she may always fought with honor to protect the horde, and finding a cause else than war can be something your character would progress ICly, learn and find out
She could’ve have her story continued in Draenor with Iron horde/ Ironmarch/ Zaela stuff, and at some point she joined the horde or something… Options are a lot, just have a look at the events that occured around that time
Oh also, you may choose a clan for your orc of you didn’t yet, what you have explained about her can fit a Warsong
Anyway, shaman RP can be really cool, and i personally love it, there is a shaman/Earthen ring community on Argent Dawn realm if you’d like to join, which there you can get more helps and ideas
Lightbearer#8393 is my discord if you want an invitation
Sorry if i missed any questions
Hope you have fun RPing, and best of luck!
Oh, actually, I do have a clan in mind for Ashval: she’s a Stormreaver, at least by blood, and is not particularily proud of that. One of the reasons she is so militaristic: she seeks to clean the dishonour off her bloodline.
Oh, well, basically Stormreaver clan was something that later was made in second war by Gul’dan and established and before it, didn’t exist
Or maybe she’s too young and daughter of a Stormreaver?

I do not understand the Horde’s love of war… But I suppose that issue will not be resolved by my words, so I won’t even try.
I agree that the elements might “let you get away with” amoral use of the elements.
My history knowledge is a little rusty and incomplete, but I think the Draenor elements shunned the Horde because you (or they;) hurt the elements with that reckless use of fel magic, which corrupted the entire world, presumably also the elements.
I don’t see why the elements would care about, say, humans or other species, as long as you stay friendly with the elements themselves (by for example aiding the elements if someone - cultists come to mind - make themselves enemies of the elements).
