Shield block vs Ignore pain

I’m trying to understand why shield block is number 1 priority defensive for prot warrior and should be maintained all the time. There is only 5 rage difference between the two. Shield block also has cooldown, so it’s not possible to have it up all the time (are there any passives to reset its cd?). And it only blocks physical attacks. Ignore pain, on the other hand, reduces overall dmg taken by 55%, doesn’t have cd, has passive talents which further improve this ability. To me it seems more natural to maintain Ignore Pain all the time and use shield block during heavy physical dmg only. I’m not too experienced with prot warriors, so maybe I’m missing something, but if someone could advise me on this I’d be grateful. Thanks!

IP gets depleted (it’s not so much a damage reduction as a leaky absorb), SB doesn’t. I would assume if you’re tanking something hard, you’ll get more mitigation out of your rage with SB than with IP.

Besides, tanking physical damage is much more the rule than the exception.

shield block gives you 100% block chance, that means you 100% block physical dmg
blocking dmg means -30% dmg taken
but you already have a % of base block chace, let’s say 40% with X stats, that 40% becomes ‘critical block’, meaning that you have 40% chance to have that block becoming ‘‘critical’’ reducing dmg by an additional 30%(60% less dmg from physicals)
told that, majority of damage usually comes from physical dmg

IP can be better in some situations, but mostly the value of SB is unbeatable.

SB is damage reduction, IP is damage absorb.
Meaning IP will b gone after X amount of damage, SB will stay till timer runs out.

On my warriors current gear, IP costs 35 rage, and absorbs 55% of 9.284 damage over 12 seconds. Shield block costs 30 rage and reduced physical damage taken by 30% - 60% for 12 seconds.

So below 10k damage.

  • Physically IP has a good chance of reducing damage more.
  • Magically IP will reduce more more damage.

Over 10k damage intake, IP will disappear (often fast), meaning the 55% damage reduction becomes 0, unless you have another defensive up. 8 seconds shield block often way better because before the 8 seconds are gone your IP will be gone.

My rotation is 100% uptime on Shield Block, then I put as much into IP as I can. We get a lot of rage, and I often see it as my rage-dump’er

I hope this helps.

ps. with talents and base block, yo will probably have around 130-140% total block value.
