Hello,
I have several horde characters on Ragnaros and I just finished levelling my void elf to 110 and unlocked the heritage armor.
Since Ragnaros is horde-heavy, I was thinking of creating another ally character on another realm (perhaps alliance-heavy) but I wanted to know what limitations this brings. For example:
Will I be able to trade between my characters? (I suppose not). I’m mostly interested in transferring some gold to my alts so I can quickly buy flying training
Will all titles be transferred?
Will all transmog be transferred? In particular, since I unlocked void elf heritage armor, will I be able to use the transmog on another void elf in another realm?
If it’s indeed more convenient to move to another realm, which ally realm would you suggest me? I focus on casual pve and open world activity.
As we no longer have realm types for PvP and PvE thanks to Warmode you can just choose wherever you like. RP realms have their own rulesets.
I would advise starting a level 1 char and running into the nearest capital to check out what the realm is like. See if you like the activity in trade, general etc. Check the AH. See if it’s somewhere you want to set up home.
I have my Horde characters on Draenor and the bulk of my Alliance on Silvermoon.
I’ve already checked realmpop but it doesn’t say anything else beside realm population and ally/horde ratio.
If you re-read my previous post, I’m asking which realm I should choose based on those criteria and what’s the gist of connected/cross-realm servers.
For example, Ragnaros is supposedly not connected to other realms but I often encounter people from other realms, so the cross-realm thing is something else. And what about other realms? It sounds all like a huge mess.
Why there are big non-connected servers like silvermoon that can hold 500k players and then several clustered realms that can barely reach 300k total?
Does “connected-realm” status only affect which players you can trade/guild with?
Does “cross-realm” extend to all servers? I’ve found some obsolete lists in wowiki, but I wanted to know if there is some more official and up to date source
Is there any realm specifically known for its toxic community that should be avoided or any realm known for its nice players?
Does it really matter whether I join an ally-dominated realm, or it’s in a cross-realm with a horde-heavy realm anyways? For example, Ragnaros should be horde-heavy but most of the time I find myself outnumbered by ravencrest players.
Is it more convenient to join one of those huge non-connected realms or one of those low/med pop clustered realms?
I was invited by a friend to join Ragnaros and never really put any thought in it, since I was told all realms are the same, and so I just got used to its community. But now I keep reading very bad things about this realm and I wanted to see how different other realms were and if my ally character was more suited for another server.
You can’t trade directly, but you can buy a battle pet, learn it, and then cage it on another character, no matter where as long as it’s same account, to sell it. That’s the only way I know of to move gold safely and legally and without spending real money (like for a token)
Some realms were merged with others, they are ‘connected’.
When you are out in the world you choose to go WM or non WM. This puts you into shards. You can be sharded with anyone from any realm (except RP realms).
The capitals are mainly your own server and the AH is server based. Connected realms were those with low populations merged with other realms in a similar boat. Realmpop shows the joint population of those servers in the figures.
If you want a busy server with a thriving economy you tend to choose a high population server.

This. You may gain or lose gold on the transaction. The pet market is irrational, so be sure to buy a pet that will sell on your target realm. There are quite a few new Island Expedition and Rares pets at the moment that are doing reasonably well. If you only need a small amount, like 10K for flying and bags, it shouldn’t be a problem.
Be aware that you cannot learn a pet of level higher than you have in your inventory. SInce your current highest is 7, I’d advise sticking to Level 1 pets; levels between 2 and 23 don’t sell well.
Yes, realms are a mess.
The Connected realms you see used to be small realms that were joined together when the population declined. Outland and Silvermoon were too big to be joined with other realms.
Does “connected-realm” status only affect which players you can trade/guild with?
Yes
Does “cross-realm” extend to all servers?
Yes, except that RP realms are not crossed with non-RP realms.
Is there any realm specifically known for its toxic community that should be avoided or any realm known for its nice players?
Hm. Risk of defamation there. There used to be realms I considered friendly, but CRZ killed general community friendliness quite effectively. The thing to avoid is any realm unofficially colonised by people speaking another language. Silvermoon, Outland, Ravencrest should be pretty safe.
Does it really matter whether I join an ally-dominated realm, or it’s in a cross-realm with a horde-heavy realm anyways? For example, Ragnaros should be horde-heavy but most of the time I find myself outnumbered by ravencrest players.
At the moment, who you see in the world depends more on whether you have War Mode on than what realm you’re from. In general, up to this week, if you had War Mode on, you would see more Horde. Blizzard are giving an incentive to the minority faction in WM to turn it on, so that could change. I’m guessing you had War Mode off, which is why you were seeing so many Alliance players.
And I would definitely not start on a realm where my faction is not in a crushing majority.
Is it more convenient to join one of those huge non-connected realms or one of those low/med pop clustered realms?
Depends on what you want from the game. Do you want to live in the Big City, or the quiet countryside? The big realms have more people to guild with, more supply of goods at the AH, more bustle and hustle. They can also suffer from lag.
The thing to do is make a low-level alt on the realms you’re shortlisting, stand in Stormwind, watch Trade Chat go by, chat with guild recruiters, visit the Auction House to see how many Anchor Weed and Sky Golems are for sale, for what prices. Get a sense of the realm yourself, since you’re the one that has to live there. Check out the realm forum, see what people there are talking about.
So much depends on how you want to play the game. If you want to raid, go to a realm where there are lots of raiders. If you want to PvP, go to a realm where there are lots of PvPers.
I just got one last question: will all reputation achievements be carried over to other realms as well? I’m referring in particular to:
Draenor/legion/BfA pathfinder (I have revered/exalted with all and unlocked all the pathfinders. Will these carry over too?)
Champion of Azeroth necklace (I have revered with CoA on Ragnaros, will this unlock full power HoA everywhere or just on my ragnaros characters?)
I wouldn’t want to start a new character on another realm to later discover that I have to redo all WoD, legion and BfA reputations to get the pathfinder or that I need to grind CoA rep again to unlock full power HoA.
Playing on multiple realms and it is really good for gold making. As i know cosmetics will transfer.
You can’t send gold directly between realms but you can transfer pets via your collection and sell them. At some realms pets are really cheap. You can buy something for 10k in high pop realm and sell it for 50k at low pop. ( it will take time to sell tho)
Most achievements, mounts, toys are account-wide now. Some are specific to the character that earned them, or - in a looser way, and especially for appearances - to the faction or the class that earned them.
But absolutely none of them depend on realm.
Whatever your Alliance alt would inherit if playing on Ragnaros, he will also inherit when playing on another realm.
I wouldn’t think that Ravencrest suffers excessively from lag in basic things at this point. And Ravencrest is not that much bigger than Ragnaros anyway. Silvermoon, Draenor, Outland and Kazzak are the realms I’ve heard most lag complaints about.
But I don’t play there, so I don’t know. Looting, Mail, and AH are the three areas we hear about lag most in, though, so you may have spotted something. Give it a bit more time.
