Hey there. I’ve been thinking to level my mage to 120, but I’m held back by these forums to be honest. I know it sounds silly but everywhere I look it says that mage hasn’t been in a worse state or that x/y specc is worthless now.
To be fair I played a fire mage in Legion and I know that some things were changed so that you have to choose from stuff that should have been baseline (looking at you Phoenix Flames), and I’m reluctant to play a shell of a specc I enjoyed.
The problem is that I also read that frost isn’t viable either, and I don’t want to play arcane since I’ve never had a click with that specc.
Is this a case of just people complaining, like you see in every class forum, or are these viable complaints?
Bit of both. Mage is historically such a strong spec that the “low” times hit hard. However we are in a bit of a down period at the moment, but Mage is still a very capable spec with great mobility, is versatile and, most importantly, is ranged and not melee.
Mage doesn’t have to be a “top performer” to be a great spec. Realistically the only time you’ll be declined for being a Mage is they already have one or two Mages (outside of fringe cases).
If you want to try Mage, go for it. The unhappy Mages are those who don’t identify as the class and instead refuse to swap from their chosen spec.
Thanks for the reply. I should have specified that I only play PvE. Mages were always called out for being OP so I guess when they get nerfed they feel broken.
That said I do believe the fire changes were not needed.
Well I have gnome mage and It just fits. Go for it. I like fire for easy high hp mob bursts. Arcane explosion for grouping up and melting trash. Frost for safe leveling. I did it 95% fire.
I also came back about a month ago. I played Undead Mage, frost / arcane in Vanilla. now I’ve been trying between Frost / Arcane / Fire.
Fire seems to me the most fun and these tips are very helpful to me.
Now i dont know, which stat priority I shoud take care like Fire Mage. Intellect, Crit, Vrsatility, Mastery, Haste ?
Thanks for sharing wisdom;)
Some say “stack haste”. I do this only so it feels comfortable. Atm I also try to keep a hold on 35% crit chance minimum. After haste and crit you are free to pump mastery. But this is just me. I don’t really look at teem that much tbh.
It’s always worth reading through the talents for tips but its a bit out of date. With the new Wildfire trait a crit build with Pryoclasm is simming better than meteor. It’s more fun too
Mage is good. In every class forums you see people are crying about how bad their class is. Overall, mage is in a good spot. Frost is good fire is good. Arcane is good for solo dps. And beside current state, mage is always fun with exotic spells. I have spent approximately 1 year to find a new main for myself, tried every class and after all decided on mage.
Greater Pyro is fun in pvp, melt the tanks that thing they can handle everything and see their healers panic.
Combustion and mass AOE can be loads of fun.
In higher PVE the rotation can be a bit daunting. This is why I believe frost still has the upper hand in PVE.
Frost,
A great safe way to level and to do normals and heroic dungeons. And in M+ depending on the debuffs if they work against your casting time.
I personally am not a big fan of it in pvp.
Arcane,
If you want to annoy ret paladins so bad that they might flee to forums (I am not naming anyone: P). Go arcane, slow them, slow them via arcane barrage something they cannot dispel. Its loads of fun but the only spec that can get you out of mana if you are not careful enough. In PvE great DPS, challenge in damage done due to mana.
Overall a fun class to play with, all specs have their perks. I love to pvp with fire/arcane. Frost for pve unless it’s not caster friendly I will use arcane.
I am not a good player, just a casual who raids max heroic.
