Retail is a toxic shambles, cataclysm a bore fest & MOP is yet more & more grinding for the simplest talent setup that existed in Wow. SOD was quite literally the only version of Wow worth logging for. Healing mages, tanking rogues & locks, viable shaman tanking & even a working shockadin. Was it perfect nope, but it was an excellent testbed for doing things differently. A lot of us don’t want more retail, we like theory crafting, we want a decent guild experience, we want the the bits that made classic work SOD made a good fist of removing a lot of the bad stuff but maintaining the spirit of the game. What version of Wow remains to us now ?
It had to end sooner or later.
Even if they made a phase 9 it would it would just end after that (which would take months anyways to create).
Its better they work on a classic+ server for 1-2 years and after that they can release content each 2 months or so☺️
I would have been nice if they had kept it going for long enough to release the next season, or whatever they want to make next.
I get a lot of SoD players (myself included) aren’t all that interested in the other versions of wow, at least not as a long term thing (I might mess about in MoP but I don’t see myself joining a raid schedule over there or anything like I have done in SoD).
But by the sounds of it, the classic team is just way to small, so they chose to keep Anniversary and original Classic (Cata/MoP) going and drop SoD to give them time to actually work on something else.
Just gotta hope it was worth while.
I think SoD was originally supposed to just be a seasonal thing, but then they changed their minds and started using it to test potential things for a Classic+ gamemode.
I think next year at Blizzcon they’re going to announce a version of Classic+ that people can play instead of ‘Classic WoD’.
Yeah it was great, and tbh it managed to recapture a bit of that magic from around launch for a while, rediscovering the game again etc… I don’t know why they can’t slowly add content (maybe not at the previous pace), but perhaps 6 monthly, just to keep this ticking along. I would be happy if they just kept the servers alive indefinitely as they are well populated all the time. Eventually perhaps one mega server?
I personally have not enjoyed retail since legion, and have just stopped playing every expansion about 2 weeks after hitting max level.
I went to Cata, but majority of guild has stuck together for it. So it’s actually fun, and combat ain’t bad.
One of the streamers said it right…
For classic+ to live, SoD has to die. Every patch SoD releases is wasted classic+ content.
We just have to hope, they take the time and nail it… Or it’s guna leave a big void
Blizzard said themselves that they enjoyed SoD and will use and re-work a lot of it’s features in the next ‘Classic+’ adventure.
When we’ll get it? I think when MoP is finished. MoP was a mostly enjoyable expansion, so I assume Blizzard are hoping it will keep people entertained, at least until next year’s Blizzcon; where they’ll announce the next version of ‘Classic+’, which will compete with ‘Classic WoD’.
SoD competed with Cata, and expansion that wasn’t very popular. Makes sense that they’d make something else to compete with an unpopular expansion.
in any case, the more people that goes to consume MOP slop, the longer we’ll have to wait for actual classic+.
you want classic+ faster?
don’t play MOP, and tell all your friends not to play it.
the faster MOP flops, the faster we’ll get classic+.
hopefully this will happen naturally without people having to campaign to boycott it.
That means we’ll get a rushed Classic+.
I don’t want some rushed crap, I’ve seen Blizzard’s rushed jobs before.
Warcraft 3 reforged ring any bells?
to be honest, at this point it doesn’t matter how much time you give them.
they still produce mid-to-garbage tier products in general, having more time won’t remedy horrible decision-making… i mean they got a pretty horrible track record at this point… overwatch 2, warcraft 3 reforged, retail wow, diablo immortal (lol) just to name a few.
but to keep it sod-related, you saw what happened with Incursions in phase 3… that one seemed like a deliberate blunder from someone who had years and years of time and experience with “content” like that in the retail version of the game, and yet they still thought that it would be a great idea despite all the negative feedback people have been giving them over the years, about daily/weekly/repeatable quests (not to mention the tidal waves of negative feedback they were getting after putting it into SOD for months afterwards)
even if we gave blizzard all the time in the world, i am still not very confident that the job won’t be rushed, because it seems to me blizzard isn’t very proactive in their business practices… they are much more reactive… they don’t plan ahead…
they probably haven’t even started working on classic+ yet, when a smart business man would have started at least basic development of it the moment they saw how SOD took off in phase 1.
if they hadn’t botched phase 2 and 3, SOD would have been waaaaaaaaay more popular today, and a potential classic+ would have a much easier time springboarding off of it.
this is pure speculation, but i wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t even started penning down ideas on paper yet, which means we’ll likely have to wait at least 2 years (maybe 3).
i’ll be extremely happy if, by december, they announce classic+ coming in 2026 but that’s just wish-thinking and cope, because that’s likely not happening.
we’ve all seen the survey at this point, and if the questions in that survey is anything to go by, classic+ is going to be trash… like they unironically ask if people would like retail graphics, wow token, achievements, pet battles and all the other retail crap nobody wants in classic… giving them more time to develop the game can’t fix stupid ideas like the ones they propose in the survey… their mind is already made up from the looks of things… its going to be retail- rather than classic+ if even 10% of the suggestions in the survey goes through.
I think the issue with 6 month for next phase would be that it wouldnt help at all. People would just quit die to time. Most people want new content each 2month or so sadly.
To be fair, this Season of Copypaste doesnt take months to create, everything is already there, they just changed color of items, added some abilities from other game versions and some npc’s, basically. + Buffed Paladins to be a Hero class.
Not a good excuse to stop developing it, that it takes too much time…
1 guy alone can probably do each phase in 2months. Scarlet Enclave is basically SM 2.0 / Tyrs Hand.
When will they learn, the only thing people ever really cared about was vanilla/tbc/wrath. Everything after that was just filler content that ultimately butchered a beautiful game.
Leave sod servers up, clearly it’s what people want , stop trying to shoehorn people into cats/mop and other rubbish. There is nothing classic about MoP.
This is an old game, many of us are adults with lives who have come back for nostalgia factor. I have came back after a basically being away since cata, with a brief return to legion/shadowlands.
The people who played sod are likely to unsub than to switch game modes.
I definitely agree with you. SoD was the only option worth playing for me. Because it’s very different from retail expansions, it’s a complete nostalgia close to classic… more innovations could be brought and developed. What did Blizz do? They offered the same options over and over again to make more money. (Classic, TBC, Wotlk, Cata and now MoP). A COMPLETE DISGRACE!!! We want SoD to be experienced and developed…!
Different experience? Bro all they did was add retail abilities in vanilla with some extra sauce.
As for development, they are working on classic+ and sod was beta test for it.
