Small brain wintergrasp strategy

I didn’t play those “epic bgs” for years. I generally never liked most of those BGs including Isle and Alterac but since a victory nowadays there awards over 100 conquest with current conquest point buff I decided to try it out and voila, it’s wintergrasp. I remember playing and having fun there long time ago in wrath times. So I decided to give it a try.

We are on defending side, alliance. Muliple people start calling to run for “sunken ring”, everyone runs there and we basically lose. “Weird” I thought, queued again, and it was wintergrasp again with us being on the defense again.
Guess what happens? People start calling to run for sunken ring and this time we not only lost there but lost the entire BG in the next 3 minutes.

Now the big brain question: Which @@@ came up with this absolutely useless strategy as defender? As far I remember Wintergrasp works like this:
You get ranks for kills. You need to get 3rd rank (basically 20 kills) to build demos and sieges that can actually do damage to the walls.
What does it mean? It means that as defender there is literally zero reason to run anywhere. Everyone just stays in base and get on cannons. The attacking side needs to come and kill the guards near fortress to get the ranks and guess what happens? They get gunned down and it will take a while for the first attackers to get ranks.
Meanwhile defenders can get ranks aswell and build machinery for defense. Send a group to capture southern bases to reduce the amount of vehicles the attackers can build.

But when you rush as defender to sunken ring, not only you lose your cannon advantage, you also give opposite faction free ranks! You give maximum ranks to fourty people in the base where they can build the same machines (while they are already at max capacity if they win the fight there)

So now the question, what happened and why are people constantly making the absolutely worst call you can make in this BG?

I win all attacks as horde + def mostly, maybe alliance just bad in wintergrasp

Going Sunken Ring is an OK tactic if you can win it. The most Wintergrasp bgs I’ve been in as Alliance, the Horde side is much stronger. So yes, they get the ranks and can rush the keep, thus the defending side losing in minutes.

Also, you never end up with everyone at Sunken Ring, some will stay in the keep (cannons) or go to one of the other workshops.

Staying in the keep could be a tactic, but 5 minutes in you get a rank (for catapults) automatically. Attacking team will have 4 workshops, defending 2. I’d like to try this tactic by the way, I love alternative tactics.

In general tactics change based on team strength and player strength. In Isle of Conquest hangar is currently better than docks because players can kill the glaives very quickly.

PuGs happened, its a random group, you cannot expect them to all behave like good soldiers, even if you get a lot of people to follow, there will still be a lot feeding because they just want to PvP, also that game is like 45mins(not 100% sure on that) if you dont go and kill the towers as defenders, people get bored fast.

The sunken ring massive battle is a quick way of seeing if you win or lose to people, win the fight there and very likely you win the game, normally lots of the other side then quit, you kill the towers and game won in like 15 mins or so, lose the sunken fight and likely most of your team quits and they are through your gates in like 5 mins.

You have to go with the flow in a PuG to a large extent, likely most follow if you say “all sunken”, pretty sure few will follow if you say “stay here and just man cannons”, and with that strat you would need pretty much ALL the players to listen.

The Wintergrasp strategy:

Zone in, check which side you are on.
If you are on the attack, leave the bg.
If you are on the defense, gz, take your win.

Source: only saw a single win for the attack side in 70+ fights. That’s after their balancing changes that should have brought the winrates closer.

Joined wintergrasp 3 times today. Lost all 3. We we’re defending as Alliance. Problem is slow people and afkers sitting in base or joining too late to Sunken. This basically makes the Alliance a free to kill group.

I dont think thats even possible.
Also defending side is way easier.

2/3 mn. Doom the alliance team in sunken. 16 demolishers go front door.
rest of the team destroying canon, protect demolisher and slow the rez back ally team.
It’s call a Blitz ^^

Many wins like this last few months
