So it looks like Blizzard is abandoning the Mac

So even with all the advances and leading performance with Apple Silicone, improved GPU performance and OS enhancements, it looks like Blizzard is abandoning the Mac.

Basically, starting with Diablo 4, none of their new games (except for TWW) has been available on the Mac. The irony of their lead artist for Rumble talking about the joy of loading Warcraft 2 on his dad’s Mac, just after they announced Warcraft I and II remasters that are NOT available on the Mac is just next level.

All this while macOS continues to grow and the huge number of their own employees/artists using the Mac. All my hope that Microsoft money would ensure their continued support just went out of the window (put not intended).

It will be a sad day when they stop WoW Mac support since it’s the only game i play and i’m not abandoning all my work and private software, even for the game i poured 18 years into.

Mac is generally good hardware but let’s be honest here, they’re never going to touch Microsoft in the PC market. There’s nothing wrong with being a fan of Mac but for all of its growth, Microsoft grows even more in the same period of time.

Having said that though, I don’t see them stopping WoW Mac support anytime soon.

Blizzard abandoned it a while ago. Piratesoftware gave a personal reason why his company as well refuses to do mac support anymore and its likely a similar reason (including the total sales in that area) for Blizzard given he used to work for them.

Mac support for Blizzard is more of a courtesy and boils down to “Ye. It works. Somewhat. I guess. If something breaks have fun waiting for an eternity for it to potentially get fixed.”

Whoever gets a Mac from their employer and is allowed to use it for personal stuff as well. Like me. Saves space on my desk, saves swapping around from one pc to this Mac, and so forth.

It works, it’s not the best experience, but it has some pros (and cons).

Just curios are you running bot OS on the same Mac ? I don’t see why Mac user’s should feel left out when this is possible. Not a tech or software fundi but I would imagine this would be the solution to the problem.

Do you really think running Windows in a VM would provide better performance than a native app? Windows on ARM is terrible even natively.

You missed this part and that I was asking the question.

I don’t play any games other than WoW/SC. I work on a Mac and all of the software i need is on Mac. Blizzard used to support the Mac when it was incomparably smaller with much worse hardware and software tech. That’s what makes it so annoying.

Blizzard has indeed abandoned the mac for new games, but old games continue to work unless they’re so old they’ve lost the source code and it’s compiled for the wrong architecture.

Blizzard only needs one compiler to compile all their games. There’s no reason to hold back.

I think the core reason is they just can’t be bothered because Macs have a now undeserved reputation for not being fast enough to run games. It WAS true, but now it’s not, but the gamers didn’t turn up anyway.

The new M4 Pro Mac Mini is a sick gaming rig if only the games worked.

You can get some games to work though, including D4. Check out Andrew Tsai’s YouTube channel.

Sorry, my answer came off wrong. The only way to run Windows would be in a VM and emulating x86 on ARM architecture. Windows on ARM is a disaster and Blizzard doesn’t even support it.

nobody but apple themselves have to blame for situation .they keep on changing their hardware suppliers with no consistency . and when you think about gaming mac is the last thing that comes to your mind

I get what you mean, but it’s a work laptop. It works, but isn’t ideal at all.
I’m a designer myself and never considered Mac for reasons like wow tbh.

It’s been that way for years, gaming isn’t a Mac thing, even if they try really hard to make it seem like it is. It just works, but is way too much trouble for the niche of people that play on a Mac. I assume.

What are you talking about? What hardware suppliers? If you’re talking about the CPU architecture, Apple has had announced a switch to their own CPUs 5 years ago. They announced their hardware strategy well in advance and games aren’t developed in 6 months.

Diablo 4 was announced a year before Apple even mentioned Apple Silicone and there was no D4 for Mac. If Blizzard ever planned to release it, they would have done it.

As for gaming on the Mac, look at the hardware and software stuff they’re doing to make it easier to develop great looking games for the Mac. This is just Blizzard doing the bare minimum to squeeze the most profits. You might say that’s what every business does, but that’s a short term gain for long term loss when you piss off your customers, and even though smaller than Windows, there are tens of millions of current Macs and higher price means Blizzard has a better chance of making a sale.

Crux of the matter is there is no consistency on apple end and developers and neither gaming enthusiast take apple seriously.
And it is not gonna change unless apple does something serious which they probably wont do .
As their main gaming pie is ios and store .mac was never targeted towards gamers and never will be .

i dont think so .there are still many people who play it on mac and if they discontinue the service they will lose some portion of base .if anything microsoft and xbox is moving towards releasing games on even their competitor console sony so i dont think mac will see the wow support being dropped .

If you want a device for gaming, a Windows PC (or even a console) is the way to go. Macs are great for a lot of things, but hardcore gaming just isn’t their strong suit.
