SOD Is dead

Was it the QOL? Was it the 20M raids? Was it the Runes?

It was the devs! They just dont listen they implement there own ideas with 0 input from others

Laziness, lack of creativity, ridiculous deadlines, bad tuning, badly implemented concepts/design, an overall disregard for any community feedback, cata classic and burn out.
Considering the fact there are so many better games coming out soon I’d say the playerbase is gonna dwindle down exponentially until we get to late SoM numbers (best case scenario).

100% runes. I said this super early on the first preview of SoD, “this will be a *hitshow in guild discord.”.

  1. It’s gonna be super impossible to balance this in classic core, because we dont have a pve / pvp balancing separetly. Cause you know they are 4 devs working on this haha.

  2. It makes the easy content easier, by miles.

  3. It changes the way we anticipate things in the game.

  4. It changes the way we expect things from the game.

And all those notes, it has proven time up on time that runes are the root issue to SoD.

What did we want really?
a) A permanent Classic +, not a Season (even if this is supposed to set the foundation for one, we can all see now that it has utterly failed, again due to RUNES…)

b) Unexplored zones and lore.

c) Fully reworked OLD DUNGEONS AND RAIDS.

d) New dungeons and raids.

e) Events like Ashenvale and STV which early on was a success but never flourished. These two events still have potential to be important and fun on a forever rolling schedule daily, without set timers, the carousel shall never stop thats one main issue with these events. Players like options and these two are one of them, for potential lvl60 endgame.

f) Hyjal should have been the main feature of endgame lvl 60, a huge and beautiful zone where the devs could have implemented for instance a non stop pvp area with pvp quests. A zone full of interesting rares, dailies, cool drops, toys, raids even mini dungeons.

…

Also, new battlegrounds very important.

What im saying here is we want a Classic + that never stops developing new content but keep the Classic style and core. It’s a full time project, it would not only earn players but keep them. Then it would be Classic + & Retail that are the main giants with complete different flavors.

It doesn’t have to make sense, it just have to be fun, and yeah SoD just isn’t fun anymore. Sure great if some indoor edited by moderator likes it, but that just tell me you don’t have a vision for what classic could be, and that you take it up the A whatever the devs feeds you edited by moderator work.

This is not ok when there is money to earn for blizzard and have a community that just have fun, and its just tragic really really tragic…

Just look at the ptr, why do you think we have a ptr for combat testing? Yeah again, cause runes… It consumes so much bad invested dev time for nothing. It will lead to Retail issues.

They are trying to make Classic palatable for retailers, what could go wrong here?

It was when the devs left and closed the door after a couple days in phase3.
Leaving players wondering… wtf happened? Total silence.
Back then i was wondering why.

But now i know. Phase 4 was never even started and they left for cata.
Now that cata is up and running. They are back in the background, working on phase 4

For me?

Let’s see…

Discovery
It’s in the name. Season of “discovery”, the whole point was supposed to be world content, to go out and find things, explore, do content with others, meet up and share things you found with one another, use world chat to see what the hell this wonky thing you just found does.

Phase 1 delivered on that, every phase since, didn’t. And now we’re entering the end of the game, what world content is there left to do when everything is green or grey leveled? Even if they added in new level 40 world content I couldn’t enjoy it without swapping over to an alt.

Basically, it is about the journey, not the destination. That’s what SoD should have focused on and delivered. Instead they hyper focused on balancing and treating it like an expansion pack and catering only to each phases ‘end game content’, leaving the rest of the game as a pointless experience that you just wanna burn through as quickly as possible to get to the “real game” at the end.

Runes
Mage healer, warlock tanks, CRAZY ideas! Well, where they at? What happened after phase 1 exactly? Where’s the experimentation? Where’s the crazy ideas? Where’s the variety in building a character? Some classes don’t have any variety at all. Druids for example have a completely linear rune path with no options what so ever. In my eyes we should either have had more runes per slot or the runes we got should have been more universally useful for all specs or even do different things depending on the spec that is using them.

However, that didn’t happen. Instead we got boring uninspired runes that encourage a meta for endgame leaving all other runes in the gutter. And now that they finally decide to “class rework” the runes? Well, I took a peek at Hunter, kitty and Warlock and it’s pathetic. They didn’t fix the issues at all. There is no “class rework” as much as there is minor tuning.

The runes in phase 1 showed promise, even if they had issues that needed to be addressed, yet phase after phase went by without addressing the core issues, adding new problems along the way and now this is their solution to it. It’s embarrassing how bad this rune design is.

Repeatable Content
So what is left to do in SoD, phase after phase? Well, it’s pretty much grinding the repeatable content innit? I loathe the incursions and will not step foot inside of there again. The pvp balance is so horrendous that I, as a complete newbie to pvp, have zero interest in stepping foot inside of something where I will just spend all of my time respawning, barely able to help out or compete. (in my eyes pvp should have been designed with rock paper scissor in mind, giving certain specs a clear advantage over other specs to the point of domination, so I would always be able to dominate someone even if I am a newbie so I can at least contribute in some way, that way the balance is less important as well as no matter how OP a shaman is 2 classes will be able to negate them and crush them)

And the raids? 20 man killed it for me. I’m not doing 20 man raiding anymore. I’ve had enough. I wanted that chill experience with the guys from the guild and phase 3 has basically broken that friend group apart.

I don’t know what repeatable content ‘should’ be in the game but this just ain’t it chief. Honestly? We should probably never have had raids to begin with. PvP events should have been new battlegrounds where you can join at a bracket levels instead of being forced to level cap and fully gear up before you can even stand a chance. Incursions should have been the equivalent to instanced dungeons but for repeatable open world-esque questing content with friends. The way they are currently designed I think SoD would be better off cutting them out like the cancer they are.
And finally, the whole idea of level capped phases seemed nice in phase 1 but since then has shown itself to just be a massive problem.

Time Investment
Almost forgot about this one. SoD for being a “fun seasonal server to just have a bit of fun inside of” takes way too much time investment across the board. I think that the leveling process should have had a 50% bonus experience (can be turned off) once you reach level 20 but nothing else. The leveling experience should be slow. However literally every other grind in the game should not take as long as it does. Timbermaw Hold, BG rep, pvp ranks, Dream Warden and Supply Rep. All of this should be treated as a casual dad gamer kind of a experience.

Hell, I’ll even throw the % drops under the bus for this criticism. I think that your gearing should be a lot more controllable to avoid wasting the players time. “oh but era is supposed to be bla bla bla” go play era then, this isn’t era.

Why? Because they claimed SoD to be “alt friendly”, ginormous time investment for 1 character is not alt friendly. Simple as. And at this point I’d rather just play something that doesn’t require this time investment than play this game. I recently played System Shock 2 again, took me 14 hours to beat the game. Had a great time. Why the hell would I want to play SoD when 14 hours gets me only halfway through a rep grind?

What’s Next?
And that brings us to the final issue for why I don’t wanna play SoD anymore.
I’ve invested a lot of time into my character. Too much time, see above as to why.
What happens after SoD ends? Where do our characters go? What is the end result of all of this time investment? Because uh… Unless I get to know for certain specifically what will happen I just don’t want to invest more time into something that might just be removed one day.

It’s like I’m sculpting something for an art show and then at the end of the art show it’s shown to have been chucked into a furnace. Gone. Bye bye sculpture I spent so much time molding!

No thanks.

Players killed discovery as soon as datamining began. The reason it worked in phase 1 was because we didnt really know yet how blizzard is gonna hide stuff which we now do. Oh and im pretty sure about atleast 60-70% of the playerbase never cared about discovering anything. They just wait until guides come out that tell them how to get stuff.

This was never about discovery, it was all about the hot new s*** and following the hype train.

Dev mons coming straight out of shadowlands and working on how to “fix” classic and turn it their own.

I didn’t look things up initially, only did when the runes became too obscure to find. I always argues back in phase 1 even that runes should have multiple unlock methods, not be obscure at all and that there ought to be some kind of a way to signpost that runes are in the area for you to collect.

I don’t care if others wanted to spoil their fun, me and plenty of others didn’t and enjoyed the exploration part of P1. :person_shrugging:
