I started a ticket but I was kindly redirected over here so I’m mostly reposting my ticket:
I’ve been getting soft-disconnected very frequently over the last 2 weeks, where everyone else is running in place and I can’t cast anything but can move around and chat is still working perfectly, this persists until I alt+f4 and I’ve been in this state for 5 mins with chat still working fine.
I’ve tried pretty much every suggestion on the forums for this issue apart from getting a new router or contacting my ISP, this means I’ve done the UI reset and played with no addons, reset the router, some weird stuff with disabling optimizing for speed+ foreground fps and fiddling with PMTU to disable discovery and updating drivers + factory resetting my PC.
My router shows no packet loss during the dcs but even still, I’ve had WinMTR up while the dc has occured and there seems to be no problem on the IP ending with 158 (0 loss all throughout with 4 nodes being no response from host). I’ve done the same test with IP 157 and that one has some packet loss but mostly only on the very final node (the traceroute IP given). (I lost these in the factory reset but I can make some new ones later on if needed)
For what it’s worth I seem to have similar problems playing hearthstone where I cannot interact with minions on board until I alt+f4, I’ve also been needing to reconnect fairly often to battle.net services for some reason, whether it is the website or the app, perhaps this is the underlying cause?
This sentence is confusing to me, it means that you have new router and did communicate with ISP, or not ?
so in the logs, there are no spikes of ping/packet lost ?
did you try VPN with different countries ?
what is your country ? ISP ?
and one tech tip : don’t use ALT+F4, but open second client of WoW, so it disconnects the first WoW client
Yes sorry, I was working on adding some more information but got side-tracked, I have not contacting my ISP nor have I gotten a new router, here’s the rest of the info I was meaning to add:
This has happened both on characters from LaughingSkull-Eu and Deathwing-Eu.
I am Using AMD Radeon RX 6900
I live in Portugal.
My ISP NOS.
I live in a household with multiple people who play online video games and none of them find any issues, it’s a fiber network with 1 Gbps. I’ve only had this issue with blizzard games, though the other online video games seem to have much lighter bandwidth requirements.
Also I have been Alt+F4 but I’m always reopening the game, from party/raid member accounts I only show up as disconnected when I do Alt+F4.
Here are the WinMTR results, though the last two I don’t believe were up for 15 mins before I got a dc:

I am baffled why not contacting ISP or changing router ?
because you are in Portugal, simple solution is to try VPN to change country to germany/poland/czech republic/etc
because people from Spain+Italy/etc have/had issues with high pings and disconnects, so it looks like there is a choke point in France
other thing: does in-game support website work for you ? and does this eu.support.blizzard.com website load in your web browser ?
and last some basics : so is your PC connected to router with ethernet or wifi ? is every PC connected with ethernet to router, or is it mostly/all wifi ? what is the network topology of your household ?
then writing only GPU, which is pretty much the most UNimportant part of this issue is now funny to me, important is CPU, RAM, all other software in background, P2P, router+other network HW, maybe network chip
I am like if you use ISP router which is mostly like 5€ rattle toy, those routers don’t have good HW nor SW
in EU we have this cool law 2008/63/ES which forbids ISP to force their end device, and you are free to use your own, but IPS will lie to you that you “need” to use their cheap device…
so you could buy some good Mikrotik(not 40€ +10year old model) or Ubiquiti with SFP+, buy SFP fiber module, and it will have much better HW and especially better software; instead of paying monthly for cheap router
advanced tech tip when you get “freeze” disconnect : log in with second WoW => when first one is disconnected => exit 2. WoW => exit 1. WoW => open WoW and log in with alt => wait some time till the first “frozen” character log out
I would like thank you for the response but I’d also like to tell you, you are coming off as very rude and pretentious with your comments.
I had not yet contacted my ISP because I was not yet confident this was not an issue limited to WoW and I simply took to these forums first before that.
The support website was not working sometimes, but now even without VPN it is currently working.
every PC on the home network is connected with ethernet.
I listed my Video card because that is what blizzard support recommends for connection issues in one of their pinned posts, if you’ll notice the things I listed fulfill those bulletpoints. I myself didn’t quite understand why but I didn’t question it.
I don’t quite understand why you assume that I use their router but this is not the case, I appreciate the advice anyways though.
I have been using a VPN since my last post and it’s been working fine, I was looking through the forums to see if there were any issues and I didn’t find any related to this but I’m glad you mentioned there were some in my region and I’m not the only one getting these.
Regardless I will be looking to solve this with my ISP and I appreciate the help and insights you’ve provided in this post. I also hope they’ll be of some use to other people who stumble upon this post.
If this part was what did you find rude/pretentious, than it should be shamed for “not explaining why” if it is something like very off from networking they(blizzard support recommends) should explain why. I can think one reason: GPU crash your game and it looks like a disconnect, but that type of lag/disconnect is server overload.
I have been using a VPN since my last post and it’s been working fine
This part is confusing to me. Did VPN solve disconnects , or not ?
