Solar Wrath or Lunar Strike?

Hello! I am new to the druid class and have been reading a bit about rotations and spells. I got one question because I’ve seen that casting Lunar Strike is basically Solar Wrath, but it generates more Astral Power + it damage other nearby enemies. Cool enaugh, but why use Solar Wrath as the primary Astral Power filler when Lunar Strike generates more?

Solar wrath is a 1.5 sec cast time, while lunar strike is 2.2 sec. The difference in AP generation is negligible when cast time is taken into account (LS takes 2.2 sec to generate 12 AP, SW takes 2.25 sec), but SW does more damage on single target (88% spell power in 2.2 secs compared to LS’s 76.5%).

Of course, these figures are based on a ‘perfect’ simulation where you can just stand and cast. In an actual encounter, you’re having to react to so many things that I usually find my choice of one or the other is situational and has nothing to do with which would do the most damage if I could cast them back to back.

There is no situation in which you’re supposed to only use one of them for an extended period of time.

The balance druid is all about… Well, balance. You have a resource bar (astral power) which is generated by Solar Wrath and Lunar Strike. When you have enough astral power, you can then cast Starsurge. This ability deals a lot of damage, but most importantly, it empowers your next cast of Solar Wrath and your next cast of Lunar Strike.

You should always use your abilities when they are buffed. So when you use Solar Wrath, it consumes its buff, and you must then cast Lunar Strike to consume its buff. When you have enough astral power AND less than 2 stacks of each reinforcement, use Starsurge.

If you’re exectuting the rotation correctly, you should consume slightly more astral power than you’re generating. In which case, use Solar Wrath on single ennemies, and Lunar Strike on grouped ennemies.
