At the early dates of farming old content specifically old raids for shinnies and fun, there was a sport in using gimmicky tactics to solo them.
Soloing old raids and dungeons was tricky, kinda hard but was doable albeit very tight… kinda like the mage tower.
So I’m thinking why not make a “Solo Mode” for such content, were you don’t just one shot everything but at the same time it’s not " Not doable ".
The only old content that is doable but hard atm is the HFC gates boss, and even then mobs just keel over however using gimmicks to overcome the boss fight is super fun to me.
I think with the success with brawlers guild, Mage tower and other solo content this would be a very cool step and a very engaging thing.
I’m thinking it doesn’t really have to be all at once rather they start rebalancing from the classic dungeons or raids little by little.
It could also have some rewards in the form of recolors, titles, maybe some specialized solo content currency like brawler’s guild coins or dubloons that players can use to buy some stuff
I would be happy with that mode as long it would not override current way of smashing trough old raids gathering transmogs and such. It should be optional and have separate rewards, and not lead into nerfing what drops now in old raids.
That argument wont apply in this case for one simple reason: old content IS a solo game now. If Blizzard do this old content will be solo mode. If Blizzard dont do this old content will be solo mode too. Because old content is already solo mode
I think the way they could do this is using two things that already are in game
Timewalking system to reduce the level and gear of players. Solo old content is too easy because we are too powefull so an option would be to reduce our power.
Arathi bots. The AI bots from the arathi brawl could we use for old content. It works using machine learning so there is no need to program every bot. Jus let the plsyer use them and with enought time they will learn to play just like they leaened to play Arathi
Make it challenging but not “not doable” - for every class?
I think Blizzard won’t create content for only a part of the classes and rebalancing the old content for every class in a different way is a lot of work.
Timewalking is rather easy in a majority of the cases, because they scale it doable for every level (so different sets of abilities) and for a group.
As solo content this is a lot harder to balance as the abilities are even more varying than in a group of 1 tank, 1 healer and 3 DPS.
And if you want it scaling for level ranges from … 61 to 120?
Would you scale for easy for the majority (why even take out the stomp mechanic we currently have?), not doable for the majority (just scale it to … 10 levels above?) or challenging but doable for the majority (well, should they scrap the next expansion or raise the price for WoW?).
If they do selected fights in style of the mage tower I would be happy (I think the mage tower was great), but to adapt various raid dungeons to be challenging but doable for single characters sounds like a huge investment that won’t pay of.
No no. I do not say scale anything in dungeons or raid. Nor make the content doable for anyone.
We must start by the simple fact that most of the old content is already doable for solo players.
My suggestion is to allow players to reduce their level and ilevel to any value for example between level 60 with greens and your current level 120 gear and level.
Then is up to the players to experiment and find the values that make the content enought challenge. For example i cant reduce my level to 90 and do Ulduar and in that level is easy but booses do not die on one hit
Or continue and go back to level 85 at that point solo sone Ulduar bosses is harder specially hard modes like mirmiron. Probably those values will not be the same for every class. Is fine ther is not to everythin to be solo with any combination. Find your own values this is a self challenge
It would be the same as having one chatacter at level 60 70 80 90 100 110 120. By the way i have one paladin on every expansion max level. I do not have a paladin in Cataclym 85 yet
With scalling to a max level of any expansion this sounds pretty doable as character scalling to these levels is already done for most expansions for time walking.
Completely free scalling of the character (concerning level and maybe even itemlevel) in solo instanced content … sounds also doable to me as it would only be number shifting as it is currently. As there would be no need to balance anything and the core seems to be implemented, this sounds reasonable.
Despite this sounding interesting to some players, I don’t think this will be done.
I think testing out character limits in old content is a niche thing and Blizzard won’t risk implementing a system that would offer a lot of bug potential without broad interest.
I think I would try it with a few raids I missed out on during the time they were current content.
Its not enough i have to farm raids for stuff i just need a challenge now…
Bro. With ideas like this you should put your cv at blizz right now!!!
I also have a great idea. To make would raids in to time warp so we have some more fun like we do in bt and ulduar. But they should be made lfr style so you wont waste time and grow white hair when you make the group.
My second best idea is to make wow with the option to be alone on the server and be able to play with bots and area/bgs or dungeons/lfr.
Well. I also think is too niche. That is way i only give the suggetion based on systems already in place. Is too niche but also there is too litle they need to develop to make it. But it dont there is any risk of break other aspects of the game.
But yet i a not really optimistic that is way i opted to level multiple paladins to have one on every ecpansion between level 60 and 120.
Yep that’s why I said Mode, it’s not something mandatory, it’s an option you opt in for fun
The original dungeon mode would still be there for farming purposes and stuff.
The solo mode is just there for fun, an extra activity, and maybe blizz would stick a reward to have players have some incentive for it.
Well it’s not really hard, I’m not asking for mage tower tactics.
All bosses are doable fundamentally.
They just need to shave off the tactics that require x number of party members.
So mind control shenanigans etc.
and then just do some number tuning and we Gucci
If you think about it this way, then pet battles is not worth spending money on xD.
It’s not a huge investment rather just removing abilities that require more than person to do them, and then tuning them abit.
A cool example of this is Sha of pride in SoO, if they remove the prison, and make it so boss doesn’t despawn when u get phased into the mini game, and tune numbers abit it would make for a fun solo fight.
I’ve never thought pet battles were worth spending the time on but it was a new feature they introduced rather than spending a lot of time on new system for old raids.
I think being able to reduce your level would be far better, it could be used in various contexts. People could go do old raids with groups although it will be nothing like when they were current. We don’t have the same builds, abilities etc from when they were actually current content. But at least it might be worth the investment of time and money because being able to lower your level would be beneficial to all. You could help/group up with a levelling friend, do dungeons, help with quests etc.
Personally I want to roflstomp old content. I am there purely for mogs, mounts, pets, toys, etc. I have zero interest in it being challenging. I want it quick and dead. I would be more open to having skips added to old long winded raids so you can skip having to do full clears. Like newer raids have.
If it should be a challenge but doable, it is very difficult.
Because in Raidencounters pretty much every mechanic requires a group.
You tank most bosses with 2 tanks, have multiple healers (and they are the only role that can dispell magic effect apart from shadow priests) and an amount of dps that excells healer and tank numbers on average. Soaking mechanics (even if reduced to only 1) are not doable or would collide with tanking mechanics (dots and a soak are most often deadly) how should a prot warrior do fights that are balanced with discipline priest in mind, there is close to no selfheal, while the other has close to no mitigation.
If you change all encounters to be challenging for every class this is beyond demanding.
If you are serious with this part it seems you have not considered anything about this idea beyond making old content challenging sounds fun.
If you could settle with Jadzía idea, I am fine, but the way you write sounds delusional about the amount of work balancing really is.
I am not asking for a new raid rather some few tweaks and calling them a new mode, why should tank swap stacks be there if ur gonna solo? however a soak should be there if you are going to solo and we build on that.
Like Jazdia said, we should be build on the fact that old content is soloable atm, and then work our way up from there in making it something fun to tackle and maybe challengy, not in a numbers challenge, numbers should be in every class’s favour, rather in the raid gimmicks, Soak / Avoid / Kill prio target / kite / etc.
There is no need to overcomplicate it, think of LK’s shadow traps if these start hitting or defile starts hitting then in the " solo mode " it should be a wipe, leaving the adds up should be a wipe, you have to avoid remorseless winter, and kill spirits fast, come inside when he breaks edge it.
In essence all bosses are designed to be beaten by players
As someone who only started playing last year being able to go and play some old raids kind of like it was intended would be interesting. Even if the rewards werent amazing it would still be fun to go and do Icc and Siege etc etc with some actual original mechanics.
I would like this idea, if you could say to the game, make me equivalent to level 90 last tier and then try soloing the Lich King or team up with a couple of friends and do Ragnaros or Deathwing would be a fun challenge.
Some people do play the game for fun you know and I know a few that would jump at this chance for a bit of a laugh and challenge.
