[Solved] Screen seems to stutter/freeze for 1-3 seconds in M+ and Raids

(solution at the bottom of the post)

I’m experiencing issues with the game randomly freezing/stuttering during play for anywhere from 1 - 3 seconds during gameplay. This only started happening about 10 days ago and seems to become more severe as the play-session goes on.

Coming out of a freeze leads to rubber banding on spells at times, although most of them seem to be successfully cast during the freeze. It seems as though button input works, but with the screen freezing, it’s hard to tell.

Weirdly enough, this only seems to happen in Mythic+ Dungeons and Raids. I’ve tried reproing the issue in other places, but have not managed to to so successfully.

So far I’ve tried:

  • Moving the game over to an SSD.
  • Repairing the game files.
  • Updating all drivers on the computer.
  • Setting up an exception in the Windows Defender.
  • Re-installing the game.
  • Running without addons
  • Clearing addon and WTF folder.
  • Running the game on DirectX12, DirectX11 and DirectX11 Legacy
  • Switching out the RAM in the computer.
  • Switching out the Graphics Card
  • Running the game on lower graphic settings (on all of the above DirectX-options).
  • Tried catching any information in the EventLog without any luck. The time of my 2 freezes for last mythic didn’t even show up as events.

I’ve completely run out of options for what to try next.

The GPU in question is an NVidia GTX 1070.

I really hope there’s some way I can solve this as I’m currently experiencing being kicked from groups due to this issue.

Update:
I’ve also tried a full router and switch restart - but still having trouble reproing the issue.

I’ve had time to run a M+5 with, which still had some minor freezes, but way less severe and few and far between then before. But the issue still persists.

Have run a memory test without being able to catch anything so far.
The issue is still less severe, but still persists.

For all the trouble there’s been with this, I might’ve landed on a solution that works.

It seems that setting the Graphics API through the game, despite multiple resets of the game afterwards wasn’t producing the desired effect.

Setting the Graphics API as a launch-option in the command line argument of the game in the Battle.Net launcher so far seems to have worked.

In Battle.Net while having the game selected in the left-hand part of the screen, select Options --> Game Settings
Tick the box for “Additional command line arguments”.
Add -d3d11 to the textbox.

Initial tests so far have been good. Managed to do a M+6 without any freezes. Jumping into raid tonight and hope to have an update later.

Update:
The issue still persists in raid unfortunately. Which has me thinking I was only lucky with the previous Mythic dungeon in this case…
Is there anything else that can be tried? Anyone know of any possible solutions?

Update: (Working solution)

(Still can’t reply to my own posts, so having to edit the entire journey as one long post)

It seems as though the culprit to all of this is Raider-io
I thought my initial test when disabling all addons meant that it wasn’t the addons that were at fault when the issue persisted.
However, I use the Raider-io software that (by default) has live tracking of combat data on. By disabling this in the Raider-io software client the problem seems to have been solved.

Still running tests, but have ran multiple mythics since doing so without any screen stutter.
