[Song rewrite] Writebro's rant/tribute to BfA

Hello everyone !

I played WoW as a clueless kid. Came back years later as a lore junkie. Felt this wicked urge to write and share this stuff as soon as the recent tragic events finally linked together in my mind.

Original lyrics in Warbringers : Jaina
Events described in the latest extension Battle for Azeroth

« Beware, beware, beware the Banshee Queen ! »

« Beware ! » their cheers went high

But they fell still, caught by icy chill

As she set the tree on fire.

The elves’ defense crumbled in Darkshore,

Their soldiers fought and died.

But then a wail was heard in Kalimdor

Because they hurt her pride.

Why this ? Why this, oh Warchief of the Horde !

Why this ? Was that the aim of your campaign ?

When war had called us, we were all on board

But THIS is not our way.

When we retreated from the Broken Shores,

Distraught, our honour smeared,

Wise Vol’jin named you Warchief of the Horde

And then he passed away.

But then we started war against the elves

Striking hard and wide,

But when we had them begging for their lives

You killed them out of spite !

The warchief’s orders be obeyed !

We burned the mighty tree

But in our hearts we knew this was not right,

What are you doing, oh Warchief ?!

Will you listen at all ? Sylvanas ?

It hurts, it hurts, and none of them can see

No love is left in me.

I’ll carry on, even blight Lordaeron,

For I’m…

The Banshee Queen.

Great song, I really liked how you made it a song from the crowd and then ended it with the warchief… Like she hears and knows what everyone thinks :grinning:

I searched for music without lyrics so I could follow your song, and I believe you hit the correct words to follow the pace with the song.

This cover is a piano version:

And this is violin and guitar:

I find both version to compliment your song well - good work :+1:

It makes me happy that you liked it

Also, I hadn’t heard the guitar/violin cover before, and it is absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing !

Well twisted, Vonessen. Something moves in the shadows unseen, hidden from our sight. It will not show itself. Not yet. :octopus:

'Through the darkness of future’s past,
the Banshee longs to see.
One chants out between old worlds,
N’Zoth walk with me!’

That was extremely well written, the “rhytm” of it just flows, too. Thank you for sharing

Many thanks !

I think, however, that so far no old god has directly come in contact with Sylvanas.
Dulvarinn, should I assume that in your poem you speak of the events in Warbringers : Azhara ?

My opinion is void. Merely am I gazing towards tentacles in hopes that Sylvanas Windrunner, unlike Garrosh Hellscream, somehow will turn out to be an anti-hero. The Dark Lady is too shady and the Young Lion is too bright. As Shan’do Stormrage would say: ‘Something is amiss.’

Odd.
Far from my intention to rub salt to the wound, but sadly I find that if anything, Sylvanas’ path to damnation seems of the most natural causes to me. To even greater shame, I find that Garrosh’s tyrannical rule was actually a poorly foreshadowed event.
Most of my knowledge comes from Nobbel the Noble’s lore videos. From what I learned… Garrosh was a harsh warrior, but an honourable one. On the other hand, Sylvanas had always placed her goals above everything else.
The events described in the novel “War crimes” had severed the last ties of affection she could have had with a living being, driving her already staggering psyche towards a constant pain, one that could only be tempered by bringing even pain to whatever her surroundings would be. Thus, when Vol’jin had named her warchief… he basically unleashed a demon. Worse even : not a brash being like Garrosh, but a cunning master of fear and intimidation (at least, I deem these qualities to be the reason why the other warchiefs haven’t rejected her yet).

Don’t misunderstand : I love Sylvanas as a character, her charisma had been unparalleled all the way up to WoLK. It is with bitterness and regret that I find that she has been pushed to a corner by circumstances. And now her sins have made her into a tragic hero, one truly Forsaken, by the living, the gods and even the peace of death.
“Alas”, there is nothing more to say :disappointed_relieved:

…but who told him to do that?

Hm. Good points, no doubt. But I just cannot imagine the story will be that ‘simple’. It does not pair up with the way Blizzard so clearly has shown signs of “just wait for it”, meaning, at least to me, that there is a lot we still do not know, and it has to be part of something major. And not as black and white as we see it portrayed right now.

My fear would be, that it won’t really be revealed before on the verge on a new expansion, but another part of me really believes, that if Old Gods will play such a major role, we need to have them on an expansion box!

Edit. Sorry didn’t mean to, is the term derail this post from your great lyrics

Considering that my concern for Sylvanas is the center point of writing these lyrics, I don’t think we digress in discussing her fate

To be entirely honest, I would be disappointed if some old gods’ manipulation was to be involved in those events. They have, by all means, played a huge part in all the evils that befell upon Azeroth, but they can’t, in my preference, be constantly directly involved with every major wrongdoings.
It would just constantly dump the responsibility from the antagonists’ shoulders, making them rather shallow and unreliable.

I would also like to nuance the “black and white appearance” viewpoint. At some point, “black and white” confrontation can be, in my opinion, very much consistent, especially in an epic fantasy setting like the Warcraft universe. Blizzard’s strength, on the other hand, is being able to explain why exactly each and every “black” or “white” hero is black or white. Anduin grew up with great mentors and a genuine concern for everyone’s wellfare. His childhood was as happy as one prince’s can be and he wishes the same for every child in Azeroth. Sylvanas, on the other hand, had seen everything dear to her destroyed by Arthas, was condemned to undeath by the evil demonic sword Frostmourne, dragged on for ages with only revenge in her mind and after that was over, she had definitely lost everything. How can anyone not become “black” after such excruciating experiences ?
Old gods may be what they are, but it just saddens me how everyone seems to forget what ordeals Sylvanas went through. I don’t want her to be innocent or guilty. I just want her released from whatever new torment Blizzard may have in store for her :cold_sweat:

Aw, when you put it like that… :disappointed_relieved:

I hope for an end to the expansion to bring relief, from all aspects.
