Nope, tried it and still one soul shard.
Well it is rather odd as i have had times were it just given 2 shards instead of 1, and no i wasnt casting dogs or any demon spell that costs shards that could benefit from the 10% refund.
Demo is plagued by the number of bugs, some like in your example can be beneficial and possibly be considered a hidden mechanics, but some bugs are just bugs and ruins your experience.
