Spec description

So, I want to create a Kul Tiran rogue, but I don’t know which spec to choose. Can someone tell me playstyles of each spec, it’s difficulty to learn and master and a general feeling of playing certain specialization?

Outlaw I would describe almost like a leather clad fury warrior.

Assassination is kind of like a melee version of an affliction warlock, applying and maintaining poisons and bleeds.

Sub revolves around stealth and shadow dance which allows you to use stealth abilities for the duration. Alot of cc and control.

And I would rate the difficulty of the specs in that order, oultlaw being the easiest, then assassination, and sub being the hardest to master.

Im pretty new to rogue myself, but I thought I’d give my opinion anyway =)

Outlaw = pirate with a toggle aoe button and deadly shot is your waifu ability.

assassination = Hit man with daggers (glass cannon / bursty boi) fairly easy maintain dots, struggles to compete with aoe whereas others can do fairly well in both ST and AOE, small learning curve and mostly requires you to understand openers based on your talent set up.

sub rogue = spooky ninja guy - as for difficulty its near enough a very commitment heavy spec as its the worst spec right now in PVE & PVP

Outlaw has more nuance to it than Assassination, so I wouldn’t agree with that ranking. I think most rogue players would agree that Sub > Outlaw > Assassination is the difficulty ranking if you’re really trying to get the most out of your class, including proper use of utility.

Outlaw has fairly low single target burst damage compared to the other specs, but it makes up for it in absurd amounts of utility, the best AoE (in the current meta) and very solid sustained damage. It also has very good range on most abilities and Acrobatic Strikes lets you ignore certain melee mechanics by simply outranging them (e.g. Sharknado on 3rd boss Freehold). It goes from fairly slow gameplay to being GCD and energy capped depending on Roll the Bones, CDs and traits. Avoid if you have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (I really mean it).

Assassination has some really high burst and is the only rogue spec that can multi-DoT properly. It still has very solid sustained DPS, especially when multi-DoTing ~4 targets. Has decent AoE with proper traits and gameplay, but not on the same level as Outlaw, especially on Reaping in M+. Less utility than Outlaw, but comes with a passive slow and the ability to not lose all DPS when out of range. Slow to somewhat fast gameplay depending on how much DoTs you got ticking. Strangely satisfying to play.

Sub - feast or famine style gameplay. You either do absurd damage or no damage based on whether you have your DPS CDs up or not. About the same utility as Assassination, but has the potential to spam more stuns. Doesn’t really deal any significant AoE damage, but instead funnels damage into a single target by building more CPs using Shuriken Storm. Relatively slow gameplay, but you really have to manage your cooldowns well or you will deal no damage. Not taking ANY fall damage and being able to Sprint over water are pretty cool little perks.

That said, Sub is completely dead right now and Blizzard doesn’t seem to care. Assassination and Outlaw are both competitive in basically any content if you can get the right Azerite traits.

Assassination is a bit better in open world and solo PvP than Outlaw in my opinion, but that may just be preference. Sub just doesn’t perform well in general right now, so it’s not even getting rated on this.
