Spec Speculation

Hey everyone!

So, remember that survey floating around a little while ago that name-dropped concepts like a Mage healer and a Ranged Monk? It really got my gears turning about what other crazy specs Blizzard might actually be considering. I had a few ideas and wanted to see if anyone else is on this wavelength.

A “Warden” or Green Knight Druid First up: what if Druids got a spec with no shapeshifting? I’m picturing a heavy-armor-wearing, moon-empowered melee fighter using the classic Warden glaive. The talent tree could split so you either go fast dual-wielding, or pick up a massive 2-hander for slow, heavy hits. The damage profile would be a really cool mix of physical bleeds, Arcane/Moon DoTs, plus some nature/poison splash damage. Kind of like a Green Knight or Maiev, but built into the Druid class.

A New Bow/Gun Support Spec I also feel like we desperately need another spec that uses bows, crossbows, or guns. I was thinking of a hybrid physical support spec, kind of crossing a DPS and a healer like how Augmentation Evoker works. Imagine shooting “healing arrows” at your group, but if an enemy gets in the path or touches the AoE, it damages them. It wouldn’t be top-tier DPS, but enough to help out while keeping the group alive.

How would a “Ranged Monk” actually work? Thinking back to the survey… how do we think a Ranged Monk would actually play? Would Blizzard just slap a crossbow on them? Or maybe go a more magical route, kind of Baldur’s Gate 3 style? I’m imagining them shooting elemental fists from afar or throwing chi-infused paper talismans. That would look incredible.

Time Mages and Spellbreakers Coming back to the Mage healer idea… it would be amazing to see a Time Healer, but also a dedicated Time DPS spec! I know Preservation Evokers kind of took the time-healing niche, but Mages doing it would be so classic.

If not time, what about a totally different kind of DPS Mage? Like a Kinetic or Dark magic spec, using a mix of earth, lightning, and void/darkness (feeling distinctly different from an Elemental Shaman). OR, give us a Spellbreaker spec! A sword and board DPS Mage mixing frontline melee with arcane magic. We see the NPCs do it all the time, why can’t we?

Warlock Void & Domination Magic On a completely random side note: why don’t Warlocks have a spec entirely focused on the Void? It feels weird that we don’t have more void-specific spells or crazy void entity summons. Or maybe even tap into that Maw/Domination magic? A whole spec based purely around anguish, pain, and torture magic just screams Warlock to me.

Anyway, these were just some thoughts bouncing around my head. Would you guys play a no-transform Warden Druid or a Spellbreaker Mage? And how do you picture a Ranged Monk working? Let me know what you think!

I’d like them to deliver on opening more race/class combos first.

Revamped Starting Zones & Epic Class Quests

Adding to all of this, wouldn’t it be amazing if they completely revamped the starting zones for all classes? I’d love to see the introduction of deep, incredibly long class-specific storylines right from the jump. We really need that heavy class identity back.

Meaningful RPG Choices & Spell Customization

Imagine if playing through this epic class campaign actually let you learn special abilities to enhance your spells, or even change their elemental type to fit your playstyle. It could even be how we unlock or change into these new specs! But the catch is, it would be a permanent choice that you only get to make once per character. Having a massive, branching class story where you have to commit to a path would make building your character feel so much more rewarding and unique.

Racial Backgrounds Tied to Your Class

To take it a step further, it would be incredible if these class storylines also factored in your character’s race. A Night Elf Priest’s journey and magic should feel totally different from an Undead Priest’s journey. Having that specific racial lore woven directly into your class campaign would add so much RPG flavor back into the world.

Unique Class Mini-Buffs (No More Boring Stats!) Another thing that would be amazing is if we got some persistent mini-buffs that carry over through raids, dungeons, PvP, and the open world. But I don’t mean just slapping on a boring 5% stat buff. I mean real, flavorful utility that each class brings to the party.

For example, a Demon Hunter could share a buff that lets the group passively avoid small chips of damage or gives a lingering movement speed boost. Mages could give an aura that helps slightly with cooldown reduction. A Warrior’s presence could inspire the group, making everyone’s attacks apply a small bleed or DoT based on their individual class or spec. Just little things that make building a group comp feel really fun and synergistic!

Cross-Class Spell Combos And to top it all off, how incredible would it be to see actual class skill combos? Like true spell synergy between different players in the heat of battle.

Imagine a Mage is hard-casting a massive Pyroblast, and a Warlock joins in by casting Chaos Bolt at the exact same target. The two spells could fuse mid-air into a massive Fel Comet or Meteor! It wouldn’t just look visually insane, but it could trigger a unique effect—like micro-stunning a boss for 1 second or acting as a clutch interrupt to stop a cast. Imagine the level of raid coordination and teamwork that would bring!

I’d love to see shaman/warlock tank spec and blood mage tank/healer spec for mage, not only it would reduce spec disbalance but pointing on these classes who are available to all races are dd only - it would be even more effective move

me not, we already have goofy non sense combos

A melee battle mage would be really neat.

I would love to see a 2nd dps spec for priest. When shadow is bad it kinda just kills the entire class. Loads of thematic potential here too.

Dedicated specs for melee hpal and fistweaver. I think all content would benefit from giving DPS only players options to heal while essentially playing the same way they want to. Actually getting into content is still a massive point of friction for wow. Solo shuffle queue times make me want to just go play other games.

More tank specs for the same reasons.

No thanks. 3 DPS specs are already enough. What i’d like to see is this:

But paired with this:

Melee spell sword tank. Relying on barriers to mitigate damage, empowering his weapon with spells to deal damage.

Is already a thing in SoD.

They could just rework it for retail.

Miss me with any kind of support specs.

They can’t even balance what we already have.

they can, better than you think, pvp is questionable but its only because top gameplay is only taken in consideration in pvp balancing ( at least it would make sense ) believe me sometimes when you see avg role being nerfed. IT ACTUALLY MAKES SENSE. Game just works completely different with the same toolkit sometimes depending on which person plays it

Give bards.

i agree with your opinion because everyone is allowed to one, but i personally think mage new dps with Shield and dual blade like spell breaker unit from warcraft three with heavy armour + cloth would be great , High Crowd control , aoe and silience , while dps also and use slash attacks and magic/infused arcane ( would be perfect if each race had different style for them / armour(style) and weapon used maybe to make it more distinquishable by race)

Another Tank in style of someone who can once per run maybe stunt for second or 2 boss while it cast dangerous spell so people could be rezzed or someone who could lift kind of shield for few second that absorb damage ( like in naruto style Mud Wall/ or Kakashi Dog wall)

They should add a Spell Breaker spec to either mage or DH, as a semi-ranged shield+sword or shield+glaive wielder. Can be support or dps really

get in line moo.we will first get human druid :dracthyr_nod:

The main reason I’m against adding another DPS spec to a mage is the fact that Ion said in an interview, that if a class has more than one spec that can fulfill certain role (DPS/heal/tank), then as long as one of them performs well, working on others stops being a priority.

We already have 3 DPS specs. Let’s not add another, that will be left unattended for whole seasons, because arcane (or any other we currently have) performs well.

Game is riddled with bugs, some as game breaking as certain classes/specs not being able to roll on loot - if Blizzard can’t fix that immediately, than certainly they don’t have resources to spend on something that’s not a priority.

and i personally think we dont need mage healer as mages are lore wise dps not healers not tanks , jaina didnt tank arthas lich king , she run away, Rhonin died from bomb didnt tank it either …. and so did Antonidas or Kaelthas , they only dpsed

Agreed. But not for lore reasons. If light can raise people into undead and void magic can heal, there’s no reason for arcane not to be able to heal.

Hm, is there even such thing in the lore as “tanking”? Who (and more importantly - why?) would You consider a tank in the lore?

Yea, but for example Kael’Thas did duel Arthas with a sword. And Janina’s barrier was strong enough to withstand a balista hit during the battle of Dazar Alor.

Edit:

On the sidenote - this:

Has no lore background either, You know. Spellbreakers weren’t mages - they were warriors ( see unit description: https://classic.battle.net/war3/human/units/spellbreaker.shtml ), and I’m not aware of any instance where an actual mage would wear a shield.

Either a gunslinger or bard spec for rogue would go pretty hard.
