The current lore has established that the Centaur are an unholy creation made from Theradras the elemental princess and Zeatar about a THOUSDAND YEARS prior to the First War and that seems to have been creation lore for the Centaur since forever.
Now the lore says that Ohn’ahra guided them to the Dragon Isles pre-Sundering, meaning more than ten thousand years ago.
Is this something Blizzard might address? It’s pretty central to the Tauren lore, I’d say, and clearing it up seems to be necessary—it is true that it would make sense that the Tauren ended up in their bad state in Warcraft after ten thousand years of rivalry with the Centaur, instead of a 1,100 years of rivarly.
However! The way it was written is that the Centaur are kind of real bad guys, scourging the land and being a real menace to everyone and everything, and so it makes even less sense that they’d gain a favor from Ohn’ahra and be guided to a kind of holy place of Azeroth, since their creation is kind of like an abomination in itself.
Just thought I’d come on here and write it out in hopes that Blizzard might just see it and see to correcting or further explaining this. Whatever it is, it does feel weird to retcon them begin such an old threat if so, seeing as only Kalimdor is plagued by them, whereas the Tauren ancestry are in four completely different regions across Azeroth, pre-Sundering. (Taunka, Yaungol, Tauren and Highmountain.)
Since we haven’t seen the zone questing that includes the centaur, I have no idea if there is an explanation, but at the addon reveal they hinted that there might be one, so that might be a case where “sit and wait” would be adequate.
If they actually didn’t have any explanation planned… well, don’t expect one. They were never that concerened with retcons and continuity errors. And even if they invented a post hoc explanation after backlash, it would probably not make any more sense than none at all.
Does it ? I mean, The “abomination” thing really just corresponds to Zaetar’s perspective on what he did ; objectively Centaur are merely a half-elemental, half-Cenarian race, which I don’t think is a particularly insulting ancestry line in itself.
The Centaur being naturally Chaotic Evil also doesn’t correspond to what’s been hinted at recently (for example, in Before the Storm, Magni traveled to Desolace to inform the Centaur of what was happening in Silithus)
Uh…yes. The Centaur as a race are an abomination. One of the first things they did was killing their father. (Hi Arthas.)
And they never really tried to be peacefull. There may be times when they are not activily in a war with something, but thats neither long nor the norm.
I’d say that the Dragon isles centaurs are a group of centaurs who for some reason decided to sail to another land and by sheer luck made it to the dragon isles where they settled. But knowing Blizzard it’s probably a retcon which will probably be like: “Centaurs existed 10k years ago and that’s how they’re in the Dragon isles”
If the Centaurs discovered the Dragon Isles just by sailing and travelling there by sea by chance after the Sundering, then the Blood Elves should have definitely discovered and settled down in the Dragon Isles in the past too, since their position canonically was just west of the Ghostlands (not sure if recently Blizzard has changed the position of the islands to another one though, but they should be there, roughly north of Lordaeron and west of Quel’thalas).
Which maybe actually could make sense as a position because the chosen humanoid visage of the Dracthyr are Blood Elves and Humans…who were the mortal races closer to them in the Dragon Isles then, they were the Humans of Lordaeron and High Elves of Quel’thalas
That’s the issue with my speculation. It’s the only in-universe reason I could ever come up with and yet it’s not great. If dragon isles are going to be somewhere near Eastern kingdoms, then it’s very difficult to have centaurs sailing by ships all the way to the other half of the world instead of any nearby landmass they can find (Orcs did this under a guide so unless they had one guiding them specifically for whatever reason to that place, it’s even more difficult).
But yeah as I said, brace yourself for another Danuser retcon…
If the Drak’thyr were created by Neltharion pre-sundering, as everything suggests then neither the Blelves or the Humans would have existed around that time period since both Exile of the Highborne and Tyr’s flight from Northrend happened much later.
MAybe they raided the Caverns of Time and now we have Centaurs of Future Past Present Past Future, who popped up pre-wota and settled the area
