(Spoiler) The biggest disappointment ! (Anduin Cinematic 9.2)

I understand that Blizzard wants to close the Warcraft 3 story chapter. But I didn’t expect such a disastrous closure of the Arthas line! It’s a disappointment. It would be nice to see Arthas’ face for a moment. A little better time to say goodbye to him. Instead, Arthas is portrayed as Anima? What? A lot of people are disappointed. I do not understand. I still hope he shows up somewhere else. Thanks.

It’s the perfect ending for him. He was evil, rotten to the core, and did not deserve anything better. His only redeeming quality is that WotLK is far away, and nostalgia plays a huge role in elevating him. Even in WotLK, he was an obnoxious, annoying character, and his “epic” speech at the end of Icecrown was worse than Sylvanas’ monologue at Arthas’ final demise.

Going out as a puff of smoke is the perfect ending.

Who cares what he deserved? It’s a story. The important thing is how it makes the audience feel and think. And well… this ending felt like a meta commentary on his story instead of a part of it. “We dragged Arthas’ spectre out again just to tell you that we won’t be doing that anymore, because we all have to move on”. That’s just crap.

They didn’t have to tell the story. It was over years ago. They ressurected it themselves. Just to kill it again. That’s what I call a waste of time.

“The story of Arthas from Warcraft III to its conclusion at the end of Wrath of the Lich King is one of the most iconic tales of our canon. We do not invoke his name lightly.”

1 year later:

So here it is, the moment you’ve all been waiting for! Arthas makes his final appearance- as tiny blue anima fart. Poof, gone. And now forget him already!

FYI, he appears during the Anduin fight, and whatever remains of him, we chip away at that. The cinematic is just the tip of the iceberg, Arthas is present throughout the boss fight itself.

It’s not a simple “lol, u a wisp now, byee-eee”. But you know, you have to look at context. I know, hard. But please, do try.

So… hitting his soul is what’s supposed to make the experience worthwhile? Doesn’t really change anything for me, just drags the misery out.

Fighting Arthas again is quite a thing, yes.

I’m not sure what you people were expecting. Arthas was an evil, rotten character.

Did you expect him to be redeemed? That would have been a terrible way to end his story arc.

Did you expect him to be condemned to the Maw so you can visit and simp him every once in a while? That would have been rather pathetic.

Did you expect him to pull a Bolvar, and become the new Jailer of the Maw? Like, that turned out so well for poor Bolvar.

Did you expect a large RP where Arthas makes another speech and all the people he wronged just tear his soul apart? That’d be Icecrown 2.0, and a sad way to go.

As it stands, we fight an epic character again, an evil, rotten, irredeemable one. One that does not deserve to have more screentime, so he simply… fades away. The biggest punishment you can exact on someone is erasing them, letting them be forgotten.

Arthas got exactly what he deserved.

(With that in mind, they should not have used him at all, and should have let his story be finished with Icecrown. But once they pulled him out of the bag, the current story is, in my opinion, a statisfactory ending to his saga.)

Not repeating the highlight fight they already had, just more pathetic this time. We already fought and killed Arthas. It was satisfying. This is just peeing on his memory, which quite a few people actually liked.

His story was already over.

Yet, here we are in the Shadowlands, where we learned that most stories aren’t over with death. Not so surprising, what with having Undead and Valkyrs around. Would’ve been strange not to involve Arthas, a character very much involved with the undead and death itself.

  1. This one could have been a story that was over with death. That’s a decision, even when we are in the Shadowlands. Many other Warcraft stories were not brought up here, this one didn’t have to be explored, either. What we got was much more “strange” than skipping it.
Leaving parts of the story open isn’t a bad thing, if done deliberately,
  2. They decided to send us there. If they didn’t have a better idea of what to do, they shouldn’t have. This is just another failure on SL’s grand pile, but it still is one.

It’s sad that some people don’t recognise the value of their own characters.

He got what he deserved in WotLK when you do the Shadowmourne quest. Uther, Jaina, Muradin, Darion and Sylvanas all play a role and have dialogue in that part.

By the way, rotten and irredeemable is a good way to describe the trash that is called Sylvanas Windrunner.

He deserves to suffer in the Maw. The ending he got was far too easy.

But the story has Arthas as much as Sylvanus, as much a victim of the jailer. from the narrative prospective Arthas was as much manipulated into becoming the lich king, as Sylvanus was in helping the jailer. This recasts the ENTIRE end of WOTLK, when Arthas asks Terenas “is it over”, its now clearly a reference to dominated by the jailer, implying he wasn’t fully in control like Anduin. if that is the case as I suspect it is, then he is less culpable for his actions than Sylvanus was because She didnt need a blade controlling her to commit atrocities when WILLINGLY WORKING WITH THE JAILER

Back in the days of WotLK Arthas has not been dominated by the Jailer, and words “is it over” ment different things.

The thing that bothers people, is that “your legacy must be forgotten” is said by Sylvanas - the singlehandedly worst character of recent years, written by Danuser - the single handedly the worst writer of world of warcraft, about Arthas one of the most important and well written characters of Warcraft.

In people’s eyes, Danuser being unable to write something not just remotely as good as Arthas’ story, but just a GOOD story, ruined the story of a beloved character.

This entire expansion must be purged.

Honestly, we are far too deep into this nonsense to simply purge it anymore. Like with Sylvanas, the best thing we can do with it is to leave it behind, never mention it again and forget it ever existed.

To me it felt like the writers were throwing shade on the old lore, it was a very disrespectful way to handle one of the franchises most iconic characters and all so Danuser could have his favourite character steal the spotlight in a really weird meta way that came across as completely tone deaf. To me it was a big middle finger directed at not just the old lore but the original fans whom the devs seem to absolutely despise.

If the devs ever manage to get over themselves this will be looked back on like Me’dan, Shadowlands has been a massive stain on the franchise in terms of writing. Don’t even get me started on what they did to poor Tyrande and Elune. The whole scenario is like an imageboard meme about Warcrafts lore direction except rather than being exaggerated jabs it’s all true.

Having seen the way the writers act, think and politicize themselves on twitter (especially Madeline Roux’s foul racial hatred) I can only say don’t get your hopes up.

The End …
I like that this expansion ended.

I feel everything not involving the death of Jaina, Sylvanas and Anduin is very disappointing. The story needs to get rid of those unkillable half-god characters.
